The Cave of Skulls

The Doctor and his companions find themselves in a prehistoric world, where they are captured by warring tribes; The Doctor must use his wits to survive and protect his friends, as they struggle to escape and return to their ship and time.

Following an unscheduled landing, The Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara emerge from the TARDIS into a desolate, prehistoric landscape. Skeptical of the Doctor's claims of time travel, Ian demands proof, prompting the Doctor to open the TARDIS doors to reveal the alien world. While the Doctor collects rock samples, he is attacked by a primitive man. Susan, Ian, and Barbara search for the missing Doctor, finding only his discarded belongings, raising fears of his capture.

The narrative shifts to a group of primitive people, including Za, the son of a firemaker, and Kal, a newcomer. Za struggles to replicate his father's ability to create fire, facing opposition from Kal, who seeks to usurp his leadership. Kal brings the captured Doctor to the tribe, claiming the Doctor possesses the secret of fire. The tribe is divided between those who support Za and those who believe Kal can bring them fire and warmth.

The Doctor denies having the ability to create fire, leading to growing suspicion and hostility. The tensions escalate as both Za and Kal vie for control, each promising to deliver fire to the tribe. The situation spirals as Susan, Ian, and Barbara are captured while searching for The Doctor. Accused of being enemies, the group is sentenced to death when "Orb shines again," but are instead taken to the Cave of Skulls. Za claims Barbara as his own, sparking further conflict with Horg, Hur's father and former leader. Despite his threats, Za cannot make fire. With the tribe teetering on the brink of chaos, its members must decide whether to trust the established but ineffective Za, or the opportunistic Kal and his mysterious captive.

Act 1

The narrative opens within a primitive cave, where Za, son of the former firemaker, struggles to ignite a new flame, facing skepticism from his mother and a direct challenge to his leadership from Kal. Kal, a newcomer, claims he can bring fire and garners support from the older men, who are weary of Za's ineffectiveness. Simultaneously, inside the TARDIS, Barbara awakens to a halted journey. Ian, still disbelieving the Doctor's claims of time travel, demands concrete proof. The Doctor, with Susan's support, opens the TARDIS doors, revealing a desolate, prehistoric landscape, which finally convinces Ian and Barbara of their extraordinary predicament. Exiting the ship, the Doctor begins collecting rock samples, muttering about the TARDIS's failure to change its exterior. While distracted, a primitive man attacks and captures him. Susan, Ian, and Barbara, realizing the Doctor is missing, discover his discarded belongings, including his crucial notebook, confirming their worst fears. They decide to follow a path towards a line of trees, noting the unusual coldness of the sand. Back in the cave, the captured Doctor is brought before the tribe. Kal proudly presents him, falsely claiming the Doctor can make fire and is his personal captive, further undermining Za's authority. The Doctor, disoriented and without his matches, denies the ability to create fire, intensifying the power struggle between Za and Kal. Both leaders vie for control, each promising fire to the desperate tribe. As the Doctor's companions continue their search, they are also swiftly overpowered and captured by the primitives. All four protagonists are then sentenced to death, to occur 'when Orb shines again,' and are forcibly taken to the ominous Cave of Skulls. During this chaotic transfer, Za asserts his dominance by claiming Barbara as his own, sparking a direct confrontation with Horg, Hur's father and a former leader, who challenges Za's right to his daughter. The tribe remains fractured, caught between Za's established but failing leadership and Kal's opportunistic promises, with the fate of the strangers hanging precariously in the balance.
