An Unearthly Child

When two teachers, Ian and Barbara, investigate their student Susan's mysterious behavior and address, they stumble upon a strange old man and a police box that is much more than it seems, leading them on an unexpected journey.

Curiosity piqued by their student Susan Foreman's advanced knowledge and strange behavior, teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright decide to investigate. Susan claims to live at 76 Totter's Lane, but the address appears to be a junkyard. Late one night, they stake out the location and witness Susan entering the yard. They follow her, only to find no trace of her. They discover a police box in the yard, which seems out of place. They also encounter an old man who denies knowing Susan. They overhear Susan's voice coming from inside the box. When they confront the old man, he is evasive and refuses to let them look inside the police box. Determined to find Susan, Ian and Barbara threaten to fetch a policeman. As they argue, Susan's voice is heard again from within the box. Ian and Barbara are shocked, and Barbara enters the police box, followed by Ian, leaving the old man outside—setting the stage to resolve this mystery.

Act 1

Teachers Ian Chesterton and Barbara Wright grapple with the unsettling enigma of their student, Susan Foreman. Her intellect in science and history is prodigious, often surpassing Ian's own expertise, yet she displays baffling ignorance regarding common societal facts, such as the British decimal system. This stark contrast between advanced knowledge and basic deficiency fuels their professional concern and personal curiosity. Barbara recounts her attempt to visit Susan at her stated address, 76 Totter's Lane, only to discover it is a desolate junkyard, devoid of any discernible residence. Susan's earlier excuse about her grandfather disliking strangers, offered when Barbara suggested working with her at home, now appears suspiciously flimsy. This revelation transforms their academic interest into a profound sense of unease, suggesting a deeper, more personal mystery surrounding their reclusive pupil. Convinced that Susan's circumstances are far from normal, Ian and Barbara decide to pool their resources and conduct a discreet investigation. They agree to stake out the junkyard after school, determined to observe Susan's movements and unravel the truth behind her inexplicable life. This commitment marks their first deliberate step into an unfolding mystery, driven by a blend of pedagogical responsibility and burgeoning fascination with their enigmatic student.

Act 2

Ian and Barbara position themselves outside the desolate Totter's Lane junkyard, their stakeout commencing under the evening sky. As they wait, their conversation deepens their understanding of Susan's peculiar nature, recounting instances where her knowledge is both astonishingly advanced—like her understanding of five dimensions—and bewilderingly absent, such as her confusion over basic currency. This paradoxical intellect solidifies their conviction that Susan is truly unique, almost alien. Susan eventually arrives, glancing around cautiously before disappearing into the shadowy depths of the yard. Following her, the teachers find no trace of Susan but instead discover a peculiar, anachronistic police box. It emits a faint, internal vibration, hinting at an impossible, living mechanism within its unassuming exterior. The atmosphere thickens with an otherworldly presence. The situation intensifies dramatically with the arrival of an enigmatic, elderly man, who approaches the police box with a key. Susan's voice, emanating from *inside* the locked box, calls him 'Grandfather,' shattering any remaining semblance of normalcy and confirming their gravest suspicions about the mysterious structure and its unusual occupant.

Act 3

The enigmatic old man, now revealed as Susan's grandfather, confronts Ian and Barbara, exhibiting aggressive evasiveness when questioned about Susan's presence. He adamantly denies she is inside the police box and refuses to open it, despite their increasingly desperate pleas and growing suspicion that he is holding her captive. His dismissive and insulting demeanor only strengthens the teachers' resolve. Ian and Barbara, convinced of foul play, threaten to involve the police, escalating the tense standoff. The old man, defiant, challenges them to do so, confident they will be unable to explain their 'spying' to authorities. However, a second, undeniable instance of Susan's voice emanating clearly from within the seemingly impenetrable box shatters the old man's flimsy facade of denial, definitively confirming her presence and his deception. Driven by profound concern for Susan's safety and a desperate need for answers, Barbara, without hesitation, forces her way into the police box, with Ian quickly following, briefly struggling with the old man before joining her. Their entry into the impossible interior leaves the defiant old man momentarily stranded outside, marking a pivotal, irreversible step into an unknown dimension, and setting the stage for their unexpected journey.
