The Firemaker
A tribe of prehistoric humans threatens the Doctor and his companions, Barbara and Ian, unless they share the secret of fire, forcing them to navigate tribal politics and escape before becoming sacrifices to the volcano god, Orb.
After escaping the jungle planet, the Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara find themselves in a prehistoric setting, immediately upon exiting the TARDIS. They are quickly captured by a tribe of primitive humans led by Za. The tribe accuses them of coming from 'Orb' and being responsible for the tribe's lack of fire. The tribe's customs are savage, and their suspicion is fueled by Kal, a resentful warrior who challenges Za's leadership and suspects the newcomers of witchcraft.
The travelers soon learn that the tribe believes they were sent to restore fire to the tribe by being sacrificed to Orb on the 'stone of death.' However, Hur, another member of the tribe, is intrigued by these strange people, calling Ian, 'Friend.' After the travelers save Za's life in the forest from a beast, they are set free from the Cave of Skulls. Once free, they are taken to the desert for the making of fire as a payment.
The Doctor and his companions are brought to a cave (the Cave of Skulls) where Ian attempts to demonstrate how to create fire. Doubts are cast on their leader, Za, and Kal expresses them. Za subsequently kills the old woman, who vouched for the travelers. Then he blames Kal. The Doctor intervenes by throwing stones at Kal to drive him out of the tribe, manipulating the tribe into exiling Kal for the old woman's murder. Za then sends Hur, the guard, and the travelers to the desert to create the first fire.
The tribe is suspicious of the travelers and wants them to pay the 'stone of death' to Orb. Ian manages to create fire using primitive methods, impressing Za and the tribe while also making them more valuable. However, the power dynamics shift when Za realizes the fire's potential and fears being overthrown, as suggested by Horg. Kal is still lurking, and kills Hur. He also attempts to kill Za. During this incident, Za prevails by smashing Kal's head with a big stone.
Za attempts to integrate the travelers into his tribe by providing food and water. He even suggests that they cannot leave. The Doctor, realizing the danger, tells Susan to quench the fire and the stick so they can escape. Despite Za's initial approval, the tribe remains wary and keeps them confined in the Cave of Skulls. The Doctor plans out a ruse to frighten off the native tribe.
Desperate for freedom, the Doctor concocts a plan to scare the primitive tribe with burning skulls filled with the fat of the meat. They create torches, which they plan to use to make a run for it. The tribe is terrified by the burning skulls, creating a diversion that allows the travelers to escape. Za and his warriors pursue them with torches, but the Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara manage to reach the TARDIS just in time. They escape into the vortex, leaving the primitive tribe behind. Unbeknownst to them, however, the TARDIS's navigation is still faulty, throwing them into another unknown time and place, as evidenced by Susan's readings and the Doctor's exclamation.
