The Dead Planet

A mysterious Doctor and his companions find themselves stranded on an alien planet and must venture into a seemingly deserted city to find mercury in order to repair their ship, all while untangling the mysteries of the dead planet.

The Doctor, along with his granddaughter Susan and companions Ian and Barbara, arrive on an alien planet following some miscalculations. The planet is a petrified jungle, silent and still, where the very trees have turned to stone. Susan believes she is touched by someone or something in the forest but the Doctor dismisses it. As they explore, they discover a metal, statue-like lizard, confirming that are not on Earth.

The Doctor spots a huge, magnificent city in the distance and is determined to explore it, hoping to discover the cause of the planet's desolation. Barbara expresses fear and a desire to return to their ship, the TARDIS, but the Doctor is insistent. Back at the TARDIS, Barbara develops a headache. The Doctor offers her a drink made of special ingredients. The group attempt to get food from the TARDIS, receiving rations in block form to eat.

While Susan is readying for bed, the scanner shows something is outside but reveals nothing, leading to more unease. With the TARDIS ready to go, it suddenly begins to shake and malfunction. The Doctor discovers that a fluid link needs mercury to be refilled. With no mercury on board, this forces the travelers to seek mercury in the silent city. Against Barbara's wishes, at first light, the travelers set out to find the material they need. Along the way, they find a box of glass phials, solidifying Susan's claims that someone else is on the planet. They arrange to take the phials back to their ship as they make their way to their destination. The episode concludes with the group heading towards the city, intent on finding the mercury so they can leave the dead planet.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the TARDIS landing on a new, unknown world. Inside the ship, a radiation scanner briefly spikes into the danger zone, an ominous sign unnoticed by the crew. Stepping outside, the travelers find themselves in a petrified jungle, a landscape eerily silent and still, where trees and foliage have turned to brittle, crumbling stone. Ian and Barbara voice their apprehension, but the Doctor's insatiable scientific curiosity quickly overrides their fears. They soon discover a metal, statue-like lizard, a creature unlike anything on Earth, which solidifies their understanding that they are far from home and on a truly alien planet. Susan experiences a fleeting, unsettling touch on her shoulder within the forest, an event the Doctor dismisses as her imagination, much to her frustration, though Barbara offers her belief. From the edge of this desolate jungle, a vast, magnificent city looms in the distance. The Doctor, immediately captivated, expresses his unwavering determination to explore it, convinced it holds the key to understanding the planet's mysterious desolation. Barbara, however, is gripped by fear and a profound desire to return to the safety of the TARDIS and a familiar reality. Ian attempts to temper the Doctor's enthusiasm, suggesting they postpone their decision until they are back aboard the ship and it is daylight. The group reluctantly retreats, the Doctor's resolve to investigate the city remaining firm, setting up a clear conflict between his scientific imperative and his companions' instinct for self-preservation.

Act 2

Back inside the TARDIS, Barbara develops a severe headache, for which Susan provides a strange, effective remedy. The group attempts to procure food from the TARDIS's automatic dispenser, receiving unusual, block-like rations that surprisingly taste of bacon and eggs, a brief moment of levity amidst growing tension. A sudden tapping sound on the scanner screen causes alarm, with Susan convinced someone is outside, though the screen shows nothing but the petrified trees, deepening the sense of unease and reinforcing Susan's earlier experience. Barbara, increasingly desperate to leave, pleads with the Doctor to depart. The Doctor, initially resistant due to his desire to see the city, eventually initiates the TARDIS's departure sequence. However, the ship immediately begins to shake violently and malfunction. The Doctor quickly diagnoses the problem: a fluid link has unscrewed itself, and its mercury fluid has drained. To the dismay of his companions, he reveals there is no spare mercury on board. This critical malfunction leaves the travelers stranded, forcing them to confront the stark reality that their only hope of repair lies in finding mercury within the very city the Doctor had been so eager to explore, and Barbara so desperate to avoid. Ian, accepting their lack of alternatives, reluctantly agrees to the perilous journey, but not without extracting a promise from the Doctor that they will return immediately once the mercury is secured.

Act 3

At first light, the group sets out from the TARDIS, now fully committed to their dangerous expedition towards the distant city. Ian takes the lead, emphasizing their singular objective: retrieve the mercury and return directly to the ship. As they navigate the petrified jungle, Ian discovers a small, curved metal object on the ground. Upon closer inspection, it proves to be a box containing several glass phials. This discovery immediately validates Susan's earlier claim of being touched by someone in the forest, providing concrete evidence that they are not alone on this desolate planet and that intelligent life, or at least its remnants, exists outside the city walls. The Doctor, intrigued, requests that Susan take the phials back to the TARDIS for analysis, while also confirming they have ample food supplies for their journey. With the mystery of the phials adding another layer of intrigue to their predicament, the travelers press on, their destination the silent, imposing city now a source of both hope and heightened danger. The episode concludes with the group resolutely heading towards their perilous goal, driven by the urgent need to find the mercury and escape the dead planet, but now also aware of the unseen inhabitants of this alien world.
