The Roof of the World

A mysterious Doctor and his companions find themselves stranded in the Himalayas, where they are rescued by Marco Polo, who needs their unique ship, the TARDIS for Kublai Khan so he can return home to Venice.

The Doctor, along with his granddaughter Susan, and companions Ian and Barbara, land their ship, the TARDIS, on a snow-covered mountainside. They quickly realize they are high in the Himalayas, but the TARDIS is damaged, leaving them without power or heat. While the Doctor attempts repairs, Ian and Barbara search for fuel, encountering strange footprints and a mysterious creature. They soon meet Marco Polo and his caravan, who save them from hostile Mongols. They are traveling to Shang Tu to meet Kublai Khan. Marco Polo sees the TARDIS as a unique gift for Kublai Khan, hoping it will secure his passage back to his home, Venice, after being in the Khan's service for many years. The Doctor is understandably opposed to this plan, and the group find themselves unwillingly drawn along with Marco Polo. Ping-Cho is traveling to Shang-Tu to be married off to an old man as part of an arranged marriage. The stage is now set for intrigue and adventure as the travelers journey toward Kublai Khan's court, with the Doctor determined to regain control of his ship.

Act 1

The TARDIS materializes on a desolate, snow-covered mountain, stranding the Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara. The Doctor diagnoses a critical system failure, leaving the ship without power, heat, or water, posing an immediate threat in the freezing altitude. Ian and Barbara venture out to find fuel, encountering an enormous, non-human footprint and a fleeting glimpse of a mysterious, furry creature. Their search proves fruitless, and Barbara experiences a frightening encounter with the unseen entity. Returning to the TARDIS, they discover the Doctor's repairs will take days, a luxury they do not possess given the extreme cold. A second sighting of the creature prompts the group to follow it, hoping it leads to shelter. Instead, they find themselves surrounded by a hostile band of Mongols, led by the suspicious Tegana, who immediately labels them evil spirits and orders their destruction. Marco Polo, arriving with his larger caravan, intervenes, commanding the Mongols to stand down in the name of Kublai Khan. He offers the weary, mountain-sick Doctor and his companions shelter, effectively saving their lives but also bringing them under his control. The act concludes with the Doctor and his companions reluctantly joining Polo's journey, their immediate survival secured but their long-term freedom compromised.

Act 2

Within Marco Polo's tent, the Doctor and his companions learn their precise historical context: 1289 on the Plain of Pamir, a region known as "The Roof of the World." They meet Ping-Cho, a young girl traveling to Shang Tu for an arranged marriage to a 75-year-old man, and Tegana, a warlord serving Noghai, an emissary of peace with a suspicious, bloodthirsty demeanor. Polo's curiosity about the TARDIS intensifies, fueled by Tegana's claims of its magical properties and lack of wheels. Polo inspects the TARDIS, learning it flies but is currently damaged and can be moved by hand. He immediately recognizes its immense value as a unique gift for Kublai Khan. The Doctor, initially relieved by Polo's offer to transport the TARDIS, soon realizes the true implications. Polo prevents the Doctor from accessing his ship, effectively seizing control. Polo then reveals his desperate desire to return home to Venice after eighteen years in the Khan's service, explaining his plan to offer the TARDIS as a magnificent gift to secure his release. The Doctor and Ian vehemently protest, arguing the TARDIS is irreplaceable and its technology beyond Polo's comprehension or replication. Polo dismisses their objections, citing the Khan's declining health and the political dangers at court, asserting his desperation has made their problem his own.

Act 3

Following Polo's shocking declaration, the Doctor attempts to access the TARDIS to continue repairs, but Mongol guards, under Polo's explicit orders, block his entry. This act solidifies Polo's control over the time travelers and their ship. The Doctor, incensed, confronts Polo, demanding the guards be removed, but Polo insists they hear him out. Polo recounts his eighteen years of loyal service to Kublai Khan, his longing for Venice, and the Khan's previous refusal to grant him leave. He reiterates his belief that the TARDIS, a "flying caravan," is the only gift magnificent enough to secure his freedom. Ian argues the TARDIS's unique technology cannot be replicated or understood by others, making it an unsuitable gift. Polo dismisses these technical objections, convinced that the Khan's Buddhist monks will unlock its secrets, thereby making the Khan the most powerful ruler the world has ever known. He emphasizes the urgency of his situation, citing the Khan's old age and the political instability that would follow his death, which would trap Polo in Cathay forever. Polo's final, unwavering declaration solidifies his resolve: the TARDIS will go to Kublai Khan. The Doctor, initially attempting to dismiss Polo's plan as madness, descends into hysterical laughter, a stark manifestation of his utter despair and the seemingly insurmountable predicament now facing him and his companions. They are now unwilling prisoners, forced to journey with Polo and their captured ship toward an uncertain fate at the Khan's court.
