The Singing Sands

As Marco Polo leads a caravan across the Gobi Desert, sabotage and dwindling water supplies threaten the group, forcing them to trust the mysterious Tegana, whose motives become increasingly suspect amidst the perils of the singing sands.

Following Marco Polo as he guides a caravan across the treacherous Gobi Desert, the journey is fraught with peril from the outset. The group, including the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan, faces a critical shortage of water, exacerbated by the Doctor's difficult temperament, hindering their progress. Susan and Barbara seek to regain control of their time-travel device, the TARDIS, while navigating the dangers of their current predicament.

The situation escalates when Tegana, a representative of a rival Mongol faction, joins the caravan. Tensions rise as the travelers discover their water supply has been sabotaged, leading Marco to suspect bandits. Despite Tegana's offer to return to Lop for water, Marco decides to head north towards a distant oasis, a journey fraught with the risk of encountering bandits. As they travel, Susan and Ping-Cho secretly follow Tegana, leading to their getting caught in a sandstorm and requiring rescue, further deepening the mistrust surrounding Tegana.

The caravan's dire circumstances worsen as they near exhaustion, and Marco makes the difficult decision to ration the remaining water. As the group struggles to continue, Tegana volunteers to ride ahead to the oasis and bring back help. With the Doctor in critical condition, Marco allows Susan to care for him in the TARDIS, while Barbara and Ian remain with the main group, their fate hanging on Tegana's return. The episode culminates with the caravan's desperate hope for survival resting on the uncertain allegiance of Tegana, as they battle the elements and their own dwindling resources in the heart of the unforgiving Gobi Desert.

Act 1

The caravan begins its arduous journey across the vast Gobi Desert under Marco Polo's command, a venture complicated by the Doctor's persistent ill temper and the constant threat of dwindling water supplies. Ian expresses concern about the water, while Tegana, a new and enigmatic addition representing a rival Mongol faction, offers a chilling warning about the desert's dangers. Meanwhile, Susan and Barbara lament their inability to reclaim the TARDIS, a symbol of their lost safety, and the Doctor's uncharacteristic withdrawal. The initial unease surrounding Tegana intensifies when Susan and Ping-Cho, driven by curiosity and a burgeoning sense of mistrust, secretly follow him during a nocturnal excursion outside the camp. Their clandestine pursuit culminates in a terrifying encounter with a sudden, violent sandstorm that engulfs them. Tegana's subsequent 'discovery' and return of the girls, while seemingly a heroic act of salvation, fails to quell Susan's growing suspicion, further deepening the mystery of his true intentions and setting a tense, uncertain tone for the challenges that lie ahead in the unforgiving desert landscape. This initial crisis establishes Tegana as a central, ambiguous figure whose actions will dictate much of the caravan's immediate future.

Act 2

Following their narrow escape from the sandstorm, Susan and Ping-Cho engage in a quiet but significant conversation, where Susan articulates her firm belief that Tegana lied about his reasons for venturing out alone, despite Ping-Cho's initial reluctance to doubt such an 'important man.' This simmering undercurrent of suspicion abruptly transforms into a stark reality of betrayal when Tegana meticulously sabotages the caravan's entire supply of water gourds, leaving them with only a single, partially used barrel and a mere few days' worth of water, even with severe rationing. Marco, Ian, and Barbara discover the devastating act in the morning, immediately grasping the catastrophic implications for their survival. Faced with an impossible dilemma—either retreat to Lop, where Marco anticipates a certain ambush by bandits, or press north towards a distant, week-long journey to a potentially bandit-infested oasis—Marco makes the agonizing but strategically sound decision to risk the northern route. He asserts his authority over a defiant Tegana, compelling him to continue with the group, thus binding their collective fate to this desperate gamble against thirst, exhaustion, and hidden enemies in the relentless desert. The caravan commits to a perilous course, with Tegana now a confirmed threat.

Act 3

The caravan's arduous trek towards the distant oasis devolves into a grueling test of human endurance, marked by Marco Polo's somber narration detailing their rapidly diminishing progress and the group's profound physical and mental exhaustion. Each day brings them closer to collapse as the extreme heat and lack of water take their toll, with their daily mileage dropping significantly. The situation reaches a critical nadir when the last of their precious water rations is consumed, and the venerable Doctor collapses, succumbing to the harsh conditions. In this moment of utter despair, Tegana, whose loyalty remains deeply suspect, volunteers to ride ahead to the oasis to secure water and aid, offering a fragile glimmer of hope. Despite his reservations, Marco accepts this desperate proposition, recognizing it as their only viable chance for survival. He makes the difficult decision to allow Susan to care for the ailing Doctor within the relative comfort and safety of the TARDIS, effectively separating them from the main group. Barbara and Ian are left behind with the main caravan, their lives, and the lives of all the bearers, now precariously dependent on Tegana's return and the true nature of his intentions, as they remain isolated, vulnerable, and at the mercy of the vast, unforgiving desert, facing an uncertain fate.
