The Wall of Lies

Marco Polo's loyalties are tested when Tegana sows seeds of distrust against the Doctor and his companions, leading to Barbara's capture and the seizure of the TARDIS, forcing the travelers to find a way to prove Tegana's treachery before it's too late.

Following Barbara's pursuit of Tegana to the Cave of Five Hundred Eyes, where she is captured and nearly killed, tensions escalate within Marco Polo's caravan. Tegana manipulates Polo by suggesting the Doctor and his companions are deceitful and dangerous, further fueled by Ping-Cho and Susan's friendship. Polo, swayed by Tegana's lies, separates Susan and Ping-Cho, creating an atmosphere of suspicion and discontent. The Doctor, meanwhile, continues his work on the TARDIS, hoping to escape Polo's grasp.

As the journey progresses towards the Great Wall, Tegana's influence over Polo deepens. The Doctor manages to nearly complete repairs to the TARDIS. Susan and Ping-Cho attempt to expose Tegana's lies, revealing he knew about the passageway in the cave despite claiming to have never been there before. Polo dismisses this as mere speculation, blinded by his trust in Tegana, who is secretly plotting the travelers' demise with Acomat. They plan to slaughter the travelers in the bamboo forest, while Tegana will use the Doctor’s "caravan" to gain favor with Noghai and return to Shang-Tu claiming bandit attacks caused the deaths, sparing Polo only until he can die in bed.

Barbara observes Tegana inspecting the TARDIS, confirming her suspicion that he knows about it. Ian attempts to reason with Polo, but Polo defends Tegana, revealing his importance as an emissary of Noghai. Tegana then uses the final repairs on the TARDIS to his advantage, finding the Doctor inside the ship. The Doctor exits the TARDIS, and Tegana produces another key, proving to Polo that the Doctor is untrustworthy. The Doctor warns that using the key will destroy the ship, but Polo, now entirely convinced of the Doctor's deceit, seizes the TARDIS in the name of Kublai Khan, imprisoning the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan. The episode concludes with the travelers captured, the TARDIS impounded, and Marco Polo completely under Tegana’s control, setting the stage for a perilous journey fraught with danger and uncertainty, with Ping-Cho resenting Polo's actions against her friends. Polo's paranoia and Tegana's complete control over him has put everyone in mortal danger.

Act 1

The episode opens with Marco Polo's caravan in Tun-Huang, where Barbara's dangerous pursuit of Tegana to the Cave of Five Hundred Eyes culminates in her capture by Mongols. Ian, the Doctor, Susan, and Ping-Cho, guided by Polo, rescue Barbara from imminent death. This incident, however, becomes the catalyst for Tegana's insidious manipulation of Polo. Tegana immediately begins to sow seeds of distrust, portraying the travelers as deceitful and dangerous, highlighting Susan's friendship with Ping-Cho as a sign of disloyalty. He subtly questions the Doctor's actions and the nature of the TARDIS. Despite Barbara's direct accusation that she followed Tegana to the cave, Tegana vehemently denies ever having been there, and Polo, swayed by Tegana's narrative, silences Barbara and dismisses her claims. The act concludes with Polo, now thoroughly suspicious, separating Susan and Ping-Cho, a clear demonstration of Tegana's growing influence and the initial breakdown of trust within the caravan. Polo's internal monologue confirms his unease and the journey's shift towards suspicion.

Act 2

As the caravan continues its journey, the Doctor makes significant progress on the TARDIS repairs, anticipating an imminent escape. Barbara expresses concern for Susan's separation from Ping-Cho, while the Doctor reveals Ping-Cho's knowledge of the TARDIS key, adding another layer of risk to their situation. Susan and Ping-Cho, isolated and frustrated by Polo's changed demeanor, discuss ways to prove Tegana's deceit. Tegana, meanwhile, eavesdrops on their conversation, learning about the TARDIS's near completion and the key's existence, which he will later exploit. Ping-Cho then devises a plan, confronting Polo with what she believes is irrefutable proof of Tegana's lie: Tegana's specific knowledge of a passageway in the Cave of Five Hundred Eyes, which he claimed never to have visited. Polo, however, dismisses this as mere speculation, reaffirming his unwavering trust in Tegana and chastising Ping-Cho for her 'reckless accusation.' This rejection solidifies Polo's deepening allegiance to Tegana. The act reaches its midpoint with a chilling revelation: Tegana, in a secret meeting with Acomat, outlines his full, murderous plot to slaughter the travelers in the bamboo forest, blame bandits, and send the TARDIS to Noghai, sparing Polo only until he can die of natural causes.

Act 3

Under the cover of night, the Doctor makes final adjustments to the TARDIS. Barbara observes Tegana inspecting the TARDIS, confirming her suspicions about his knowledge of the ship. Ian attempts a desperate bluff, confronting Polo directly about his changed attitude and defending the travelers. Polo, however, reveals Tegana's importance as Noghai's emissary, explicitly stating his trust in Tegana over the mysterious travelers. This exchange solidifies Polo's complete allegiance to Tegana and signals the point of no return. Tegana then enters, dramatically revealing the Doctor's presence inside the TARDIS and producing another key, falsely presenting it as proof of the Doctor's deceit. As the Doctor emerges, Polo demands the key. Despite the Doctor's warning that using the key without proper knowledge will destroy the ship, Tegana forcibly wrenches it from him. Polo, now fully convinced of the Doctor's treachery, invokes the authority of Kublai Khan, seizes the TARDIS, and orders the imprisonment of the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan. The Doctor, in a final act of defiance, condemns Polo as a 'poor, pathetic, stupid savage.' The episode concludes with the travelers captured, the TARDIS impounded, and Marco Polo entirely under Tegana’s control, leaving Ping-Cho resentful and everyone in mortal danger.
