Rider From Shang-Tu

Marco Polo's journey to Kublai Khan's court is threatened by bandits and the treacherous Tegana, while the Doctor and his companions desperately seek to regain their ship, the Tardis, navigating political intrigue and dangerous landscapes in ancient China.

In the midst of a journey to fulfill Kublai Khan's summons, Marco Polo's caravan faces a sudden bandit attack, which is revealed to be masterminded by the duplicitous Tegana. The Doctor, Ian, and Barbara, still held captive by Polo, find themselves caught in the crossfire, their desire to escape intensifying with each passing obstacle.

The episode unfolds with the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Susan trapped by Marco Polo, their ship, the Tardis, impounded. When bandits attack, guided by the treacherous Tegana, the group finds themselves embroiled in a dangerous game of survival. Ian and Marco devise a plan to use exploding bamboo to fend off the attackers, momentarily uniting them against a common enemy. Despite their efforts, the Doctor remains suspicious of Tegana's motives.

Following the defeat of the bandits, Marco Polo questions the Doctor and his companions about their attempted escape. Despite saving Polo's life, Polo only restores their previous freedoms but not the Tardis keys. Later, they discover that Tegana was involved with the bandits and that one of them was previously seen in Cave of Five Hundred Eyes. Susan befriends Ping-Cho, one of Polo's servants.

A courier from Kublai Khan arrives with orders for Marco Polo to immediately travel to Shang-Tu. Polo prepares to leave, intending for their possessions, including the Tardis, to follow later. This news intensifies the Doctor's desperation to regain his ship.

As Polo prepares to leave for Shang-Tu, they arrive to Cheng-Ting way station. The Tardis is moved to the stables to the Doctor dismay. Meanwhile, Tegana conspires with Kuiju to steal the Tardis, which he believes is a war lord's tomb, to give to Noghai. Ping-Cho, sympathizing with Susan's plight, secretly steals the Tardis key from Marco Polo and gives it to Susan. Despite concerns about breaking her promise, she is determined to help the Doctor and his companions return home.

That night, while everyone sleeps, Ian and Doctor sneak out to the stables where the Tardis is held. Upon recovering the key, the Doctor and his companions make a desperate attempt to enter the Tardis and escape Marco Polo's captivity. As the Doctor, Ian, and Barbara make their way to the stables, Susan returns after saying goodbye to Ping-Cho.

Act 1

The caravan faces a bandit attack orchestrated by Acomat, who awaits Tegana's signal. Ian discovers a dead guard and warns Marco Polo, who initially dismisses the Doctor's suggestion to use the Tardis for escape. Polo and Ian devise a plan to use exploding bamboo to scare off the attackers. Tegana, feigning ignorance, questions the existence of bandits. The Doctor and Ian prepare the bamboo, with Ian confessing their prior escape attempt. The bandits attack, and Tegana kills their leader, Acomat, just as the bamboo explodes, driving the remaining bandits away. In the aftermath, Polo questions the Doctor, Ian, and Barbara about their escape attempt. He restores their previous freedoms but retains the Tardis keys, stating he will be guarded day and night. The Doctor, Ian, and Barbara then deduce Tegana's complicity in the bandit attack, recognizing a dead bandit from the Cave of Five Hundred Eyes. A courier from Kublai Khan arrives, ordering Marco Polo to Shang-Tu immediately, which intensifies the Doctor's urgency to regain the Tardis. Polo plans for their possessions, including the Tardis, to follow later.

Act 2

Marco Polo, now keenly aware of the Doctor's group's escape attempts, takes extra precautions by hiding the Tardis keys within the spine of his journal, extracting a promise of secrecy from Ping-Cho. The caravan embarks on its urgent six-day journey to Cheng-Ting, a crucial way station on the route to Shang-Tu, following Kublai Khan's direct orders. Upon their arrival at Cheng-Ting, the Doctor expresses profound dismay when the way station master, Wang-Lo, informs them the Tardis has been moved from the courtyard to the stables, ostensibly for safekeeping, but effectively complicating any immediate escape plans. Concurrently, Tegana meets with Kuiju, a local criminal figure with an eye patch and a monkey, to conspire to steal the Tardis. Tegana, misinterpreting the Tardis as a valuable 'War Lord's tomb,' intends to present it to Noghai, offering a substantial payment of gold. Witnessing Susan's deep despair over the potential loss of her home and the slim chances of ever returning, Ping-Cho, despite her earlier promise to Marco, secretly retrieves the Tardis key from Polo's journal. Later, she discreetly gives the key to Susan, expressing profound sympathy for her plight and a determined desire to help her and her companions return home, thereby setting the immediate stage for their escape attempt that very night.

Act 3

Under the cover of night, with the entire camp asleep, the Doctor and Ian initiate their desperate plan to reclaim the Tardis. Ian devises a diversion, pretending to be drunk to distract and incapacitate the lone guard stationed near the stables. While Ian engages the guard, the Doctor and Barbara seize the opportunity to sneak past, making their way towards the stables where the Tardis is now held. Tegana observes these movements from a distance, his suspicions confirmed, though his full intentions remain unclear. Susan, having just said a heartfelt goodbye to Ping-Cho, returns to the group, slightly delayed. As Ian successfully knocks out the guard and joins the Doctor and Barbara at the Tardis, they prepare to enter. The Doctor, having secured the key, is about to close the doors when Ian realizes Susan is not yet inside. Barbara confirms Susan's brief absence to bid farewell to Ping-Cho, creating a moment of heightened tension and vulnerability just as their escape is within reach. The act concludes with the companions on the verge of entering the Tardis, but with Susan's momentary delay adding a critical element of suspense.
