The Sea of Death
When the TARDIS crew lands on a planet plagued by a sea of acid, they are blackmailed into a quest by Arbitan, the sole protector of a machine, to recover the five keys of Marinus before the Voord do.
The Doctor, along with Ian, Barbara, and Susan, arrive in the TARDIS on an island adjacent to a sea of acid. They quickly discover metal, torpedo-like vehicles and encounter a dead frogman-like creature in a protective suit, realizing the planet is inhabited and hostile.
Susan wanders off and finds a massive, mysterious building (a pyramid), and disappears inside. The Doctor, Ian, and Barbara follow, each being drawn into the pyramid through concealed entrances. Inside, they discover a world inhabited by robed figures and face further threats from the frogmen, referred to as the Voord.
Ian eventually rescues one of the robed figures, Arbitan, from a Voord attack. Arbitan claims the Voord are trying to penetrate the pyramid. Arbitan explains he is the sole protector of a sophisticated machine, the Conscience of Marinus, that once controlled the minds of the planet's inhabitants, eliminating evil. However, a man named Yartek and his followers, the Voord, found a way to overcome the machine's power. To prevent the machine from falling into the wrong hands, Arbitan removed its five key microcircuits and hid them across Marinus. He kept one while the other four were placed in locations of safety.
Arbitan blackmails the Doctor and his companions into finding the keys by erecting a force field around the TARDIS. He provides them with devices that enable teleportation across space, promising access to the TARDIS upon their return with all the keys to Marinus. One by one, Barbara, Ian, Susan, and the Doctor use the teleportation device and begin their separate journeys to find the keys. Before they leave, Arbitan warns them that if they return to find the Voord have taken over, they must destroy the keys rather than let them fall into the hands of the enemy. As the episode concludes, a Voord assassinates Arbitan.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The TARDIS crew materializes on a seemingly tranquil island, quickly discovering the surrounding sea is highly corrosive acid and the environment is hostile. They encounter advanced, torpedo-like vehicles and a dead frogman in a protective suit, indicating intelligent, dangerous inhabitants. Susan, Barbara, and the Doctor are separately drawn into a colossal pyramid, where they encounter robed figures and the menacing frogmen, identified as the Voord. Ian rescues one of the robed figures, Arbitan, who reveals he is the sole protector of the 'Conscience of Marinus,' a sophisticated machine designed to eliminate evil. Arbitan explains that a man named Yartek and his Voord followers found a way to overcome the machine's power. To prevent its misuse, Arbitan removed its five key microcircuits, hiding four across Marinus while retaining one. This act establishes the immediate dangers of the planet, introduces the central conflict between Arbitan and the Voord, and reveals the crucial MacGuffin: the five keys. The companions are now trapped within this conflict, their initial exploration giving way to a deeper, more dangerous understanding of their predicament, setting the stage for their forced involvement.

Arbitan reveals his true intentions, blackmailing the Doctor and his companions by erecting an impenetrable force field around the TARDIS, effectively stranding them. He demands they retrieve the four hidden key microcircuits, promising to release their ship only upon the keys' return. Despite the Doctor's outrage at the blatant coercion, Ian insists they have no choice but to comply, prioritizing their escape. Arbitan provides them with advanced teleportation devices, explaining their function and their programming for specific destinations across Marinus where the keys are hidden. He also issues a dire warning: if they return to find the Voord have seized the pyramid, they must destroy the keys rather than let them fall into enemy hands. One by one, Barbara, Susan, Ian, and finally the Doctor activate their devices, vanishing from the control room to embark on their perilous, individual missions. This act solidifies the central conflict, transforms the companions from accidental visitors into unwilling participants, and sets the stage for the episodic adventures to follow. The forced nature of their quest underscores their vulnerability and the high stakes involved.

As the Doctor and his companions vanish, each transported to a different corner of Marinus, Arbitan remains alone in the control room, a figure of quiet hope and profound weariness. He voices his fervent wish for their success in retrieving the keys, a success he believes is vital for the salvation of his people. He also expresses a personal, poignant longing for news of his missing daughter, a detail that humanizes him just before his demise. His solitude, however, is short-lived and tragically interrupted. A Voord, having evidently been eavesdropping on the entire exchange or lying in wait, emerges from the shadows, demonstrating the enemy's persistent infiltration and immediate threat. The Voord sneaks up behind Arbitan and, with brutal efficiency, fatally stabs him in the back. This sudden, violent assassination leaves the 'Conscience of Marinus' machine unprotected and the companions' only direct contact and blackmailer dead, unaware of the profound shift in their mission's context. The act serves as a shocking cliffhanger, raising the stakes dramatically and immediately for the next episode. The Voord's successful infiltration and elimination of Arbitan signify a critical turning point, suggesting the enemy is far more pervasive and effective than initially believed, and that the companions are now truly on their own, their blackmailer gone, and the fate of Marinus hanging precariously in the balance. This violent conclusion ensures the audience understands the immediate danger and the isolation of the TARDIS crew, who have been sent on a quest by a now-deceased guardian.
