Assassin at Peking

When the manipulative War Lord Tegana arrives in Peking and ingratiates himself to Kublai Khan, the Doctor and his companions must expose Tegana's treachery and prevent an assassination that would plunge the empire into chaos and open it to invasion.

The Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara find themselves embroiled in political intrigue at the court of Kublai Khan in Peking. Marco Polo is present, having gifted his caravan (the TARDIS in disguise) to the Khan. The wily War Lord Tegana arrives, seeking an audience, and quickly gains the Khan's favor while secretly plotting against him.

The Doctor engages the Khan in a game of backgammon, wagering increasingly extravagant prizes, including Marco Polo's caravan and, ultimately, the TARDIS itself. The Empress interrupts, wary of wagers due to the Khan’s gout, adding a layer of comedic tension. Marco Polo expresses his growing concern to Barbara and Susan as Ian and Ping-Cho are accused of stealing from the Khan by Tegana, who is manipulating events.

Ian and Ping-Cho uncover Tegana's treacherous plan revealing he serves Noghai, Kublai Khan's enemy, and aims to destabilize the empire. Ping-Cho is excused, as an arranged marriage to take her away from Peking looms. Marco Polo organizes a banquet in Peking but grows increasingly uneasy with Tegana's influence over the Khan. Informed about Noghai’s army marching on Peking, the Doctor realizes Tegana intends to assassinate the Khan, leaving the empire vulnerable to Noghai's invasion.

After multiple foiled attempts to warn the Khan, the Doctor and his companions are branded as enemies. Ian tries to warn Marco Polo, but he doesn’t believe him. Finally, just as Tegana attempts to assassinate the Khan, Marco Polo intervenes, engaging Tegana in a sword fight and killing him. Surrounded, Tegana commits suicide instead of facing the Khan's justice. With Tegana's plot exposed, the Doctor, Susan, Ian, and Barbara return to the TARDIS, which Marco Polo has secretly unlocked. They bid farewell to Ping-Cho, and the TARDIS dematerializes, leaving Marco Polo to ponder the truth of his experience in Cathay.

Act 1

The narrative opens on the Karakorum Road, establishing the immediate threat posed by War Lord Tegana, who reveals his allegiance to Noghai and his intent to use the Doctor's 'caravan' (the TARDIS) for world conquest. Ian's attempt to reason with Tegana results in a skirmish, leading to the death of Kuiju and Ian's capture alongside Ping-Cho. Ling-Tau, a Khan's courier, identifies them, but defers judgment on Ping-Cho's accusation against Tegana to Kublai Khan. The scene shifts to Peking, where the Doctor engages Kublai Khan in a high-stakes backgammon game, wagering increasingly fantastical prizes, culminating in the TARDIS itself. The Empress's comedic interjection about the Khan's gout adds levity, but the stakes remain high. Marco Polo arrives, informing the Khan of Tegana's presence and expressing concern about the TARDIS wager to Barbara and Susan. The companions initially hope winning the TARDIS back will allow them to return home. However, their hopes are dashed when Ling-Tau reports Tegana has accused Ian and Ping-Cho of theft. The Doctor then reveals he lost the backgammon game, solidifying the Khan's possession of the TARDIS. Ping-Cho is subsequently excused from the charges due to her impending arranged marriage, leaving Ian isolated and vulnerable to Tegana's machinations. This act effectively sets up Tegana as the primary antagonist, establishes the TARDIS as a contested object, and traps the companions within the Khan's court, creating the central conflict.

Act 2

Following the Doctor's loss of the TARDIS and Ian's accusation, the companions grapple with their predicament. Ian and Ping-Cho recount Tegana's explicit declaration of serving Noghai, but Ling-Tau's denial weakens their case against the manipulative War Lord. Marco Polo, despite his growing unease, informs Ping-Cho that her arranged marriage will excuse her from the theft charges, isolating Ian further. Tegana, meanwhile, skillfully ingratiates himself with Kublai Khan, presenting the TARDIS as a prize he 'recovered' and subtly sowing seeds of doubt about Marco Polo's loyalty, suggesting Polo's actions were driven by a selfish desire to return to Venice. The Khan, swayed by Tegana's influence, expresses anger and distrust towards Marco Polo, demanding the TARDIS key and threatening banishment if Polo fails to prove his worth. A dramatic turn occurs at the banquet when Ping-Cho's elderly fiancé dies from a supposed 'elixir of life,' a death the Empress implies is suspicious. Ping-Cho's lack of grief and her subsequent permission to remain at court hint at deeper manipulations. The companions, now branded as enemies and confined, piece together Tegana's true motive. Barbara recalls the Khan's concern about Noghai's army movements, leading the Doctor to a chilling realization: Tegana intends to assassinate Kublai Khan, plunging the empire into chaos and facilitating Noghai's invasion. This revelation transforms their goal from merely retrieving the TARDIS to preventing a regicide and averting widespread conflict, significantly escalating the narrative stakes.

Act 3

With the assassination plot exposed, the companions initiate a desperate escape to warn Kublai Khan. The Doctor, Ian, Susan, and Barbara overpower a guard, but their attempt to reach the Khan is thwarted when they encounter Marco Polo. Despite Ian's urgent warnings about Tegana's murderous intent, Polo, still under Tegana's influence and the Khan's recent displeasure, orders Ian's arrest, deepening the sense of futility. However, Ling-Tau's timely arrival with news of Noghai's army marching on Peking provides irrefutable evidence, finally convincing Marco Polo of Tegana's treachery. Polo, now understanding the gravity of the situation, rushes to the Throne Room, leaving the Doctor with a parchment and instructions to stay put. In the Throne Room, Tegana, under the guise of discussing peace terms, draws his sword and attempts to assassinate the Khan, mistakenly killing the Vizier instead. Marco Polo bursts in, heroically intervening and engaging Tegana in a fierce sword fight. Polo ultimately defeats Tegana, who, rather than face the Khan's justice, commits suicide. With the plot foiled and the Khan safe, Marco Polo, now fully redeemed in the Khan's eyes, discreetly gives the Doctor the TARDIS keys and urges the companions to escape. They share a poignant farewell with Ping-Cho before the TARDIS dematerializes. The episode concludes with Kublai Khan acknowledging the TARDIS's miraculous nature and Marco Polo reflecting on the extraordinary, unbelievable truths he has witnessed in Cathay, leaving him to ponder the blurred lines between past and future.
