Sentence of Death

When Ian is framed for murder and sentenced to death in a city with a corrupt legal system, the Doctor must race against time to uncover the true killer and prove Ian's innocence before it's too late, all while searching for a stolen key.

In the city of Millenius, Ian wakes up with amnesia in a vault, only to be accused of murdering a guard and stealing a micro-key. Chief Enquirer Tarron arrests Ian, declaring him guilty until proven innocent—a concept alien to Ian. Barbara and the others arrive and are allowed to speak with Ian briefly, where they learn the Doctor is missing. The Doctor suddenly appears, vowing to defend Ian in court. During the trial, the Doctor gets a two-day reprieve to gather evidence and sets Altos and Sabetha to research past murder cases. The Doctor, Barbara, and Susan investigate the crime scene, where the Doctor deduces that the relief guard, Ayden, is the real killer.

Barbara and Susan visit Ayden's home, where his suspicious behavior and Kala's distress hints at Ayden's guilt. They overhear a conversation between Ayden and Eyesen, a prosecutor, furthering the mystery. Back in court, Eyesen presents questionable evidence against Ian, but the Doctor counters by presenting Sabetha with a micro-key, claiming she received it from the actual murderer, and she identifies Ayden. In a dramatic turn, Ayden is suddenly killed by a mysterious device. Kala is devastated, and the court is thrown into chaos. The Doctor later reveals that the key Sabetha presented wasn't the original, but one the doctor had. Aydon was killed to stop him disclosing who the fourth key was given to. Focus shifts to finding the fourth key as well proving Ian's innocence.

Tarron conducts psychometric tests on the murder weapon. Barbara is informed and later receives a message stating there'll be another death if the hiding place of the key is revealed. Soon after this warning, Susan calls Barbara to let her know she's been kidnapped implying she may be killed if the key is disclosed. Fearful, Barbara decides not to tell the Doctor. Barbara, Altos, and Sabetha revisit what has happened to come up with a better picture with what's going on, realizing that Ayden knows who knows everything. Barbara attempts to find Kala, Ayden's wife, suspecting she might know more than she lets on with who Ayden was seeing recently. As time runs out for Ian, and Barbara, Altos and Sabetha's search to find Susan continues.

Act 1

Ian wakes in a maximum-security vault, disoriented and accused of murdering a guard and stealing a micro-key. Chief Enquirer Tarron interrogates Ian, dismissing his claims of amnesia and an attacker. Tarron declares Ian guilty under the city's legal system, where the accused must prove innocence, and charges him with murder, carrying a death sentence. Barbara, Susan, and Altos arrive, having searched for the Doctor. They learn the Doctor is missing, intensifying their concern for Ian's predicament. The Doctor dramatically appears, having studied Millenius's laws, and vows to defend Ian in court. During the trial, the Doctor successfully argues for a two-day reprieve to gather evidence. He immediately assigns Altos and Sabetha to research past murder cases in the city's library. The Doctor, Barbara, and Susan return to the crime scene in the vault. Through meticulous observation and reconstruction of events, the Doctor deduces that the relief guard, Ayden, is the actual murderer. He theorizes Ayden killed his colleague, hid the key, and then feigned being the first responder to the alarm, setting the stage for the investigation to find concrete proof.

Act 2

Barbara and Susan visit Ayden's home, where his aggressive and defensive behavior, coupled with Kala's evident distress, strongly suggests his involvement in the crime. They overhear a suspicious telephonic conversation between Ayden and Eyesen, a prosecutor, hinting at a deeper conspiracy. Back in court, Eyesen presents his case, including psychometric evidence linking Ian to the murder weapon. The Doctor dramatically counters Eyesen's prosecution. He calls Sabetha as his witness, who presents a micro-key and identifies Ayden, sitting in the front row, as the man who gave it to her and killed the guard. Ayden attempts to flee but is restrained. As he begins to confess, stating, 'They made me do it,' a mysterious device kills him instantly in a flash of light. Kala, Ayden's wife, collapses in grief, and the court erupts in chaos. The Doctor later reveals the key Sabetha presented was a replica he had provided, a subterfuge to expose Ayden. He explains Ayden's murder was an act to silence him before he could disclose the identity of the person holding the fourth micro-key, shifting the immediate objective from proving Ian's innocence to finding this crucial missing key.

Act 3

Tarron initiates psychometric tests on the device that killed Ayden, hoping to identify his killer. The court resumes, and despite Ayden's death, Eyesen continues to prosecute Ian, now attempting to implicate him in Ayden's murder by twisting Ayden's dying words. The tribunal denies the Doctor's request for additional time, confirming Ian's imminent execution. Barbara receives an anonymous message threatening 'another death' if the location of the key is revealed. Immediately following this warning, Susan calls Barbara, implying she has been kidnapped and will be killed if the key's hiding place is disclosed. Fearing for Susan's life and suspecting Tarron's potential involvement, Barbara decides to withhold this critical information from the Doctor, prioritizing his focus on Ian's defense. Barbara, Altos, and Sabetha review the events, concluding Ayden knew all the conspirators and was killed to prevent his testimony. They decide to find Kala, Ayden's wife, believing she might know who Ayden was frequently seeing, which could lead them to Susan and the missing key. With Ian's execution rapidly approaching, the group races against time to save Susan and uncover the truth.
