The Bride of Sacrifice

Barbara, posing as the goddess Yetaxa, battles the evil High Priest Tlotoxl who plans a human sacrifice during an eclipse, while her companions uncover a hidden tomb and grapple with the Aztecs' rigid laws and customs.

Barbara, continuing her charade as the Aztec goddess Yetaxa, finds herself in a power struggle with Tlotoxl, the High Priest of Sacrifice, who seeks to undermine her influence. Tlotoxl plots to expose Barbara as a false goddess, using both deception and manipulation to sow seeds of doubt among the Aztec people and even within Barbara's own circle. His attempts to test Barbara's divinity with poison fail, further fueling the conflict between them.

Meanwhile, the Doctor becomes entangled in a romantic relationship with Cameca, who gifts him a medallion from Yetaxa's tomb, leading him to suspect a hidden tunnel. Ian, growing increasingly wary of the Aztecs' practices, uncovers Tlotoxl's plan to punish Susan, Barbara's handmaiden, for speaking out against their teachings. This puts Barbara in a difficult position, torn between her desire to protect Susan and her commitment to maintaining her facade as a goddess.

The climax approaches as the day of the eclipse nears, bringing with it the scheduled human sacrifice and Susan's impending punishment. Barbara and Autloc, the High Priest of Knowledge, find themselves at odds over how to handle the situation, with Autloc prioritizing the preservation of Aztec law and Barbara focused on saving Susan's life. The Doctor and Ian continue their investigation into the hidden tunnel, hoping to find a way to escape the dangerous situation. As tensions rise and alliances shift, Barbara must make a difficult decision that could determine the fate of herself, her companions, and the Aztec people.

Act 1

This act establishes the immediate power struggle between Barbara, posing as Yetaxa, and the cunning High Priest Tlotoxl. Barbara asserts her authority by holding Tlotoxl at knifepoint, successfully saving her servant from punishment. This public defiance humiliates Tlotoxl, intensifying his resolve to expose her as a false goddess. He immediately begins plotting, seeking information about Yetaxa's tomb from Ixta, believing it holds the key to discrediting Barbara. Meanwhile, Barbara attempts to sway Autloc, the High Priest of Knowledge, to her side, revealing Tlotoxl's manipulative plan for a human sacrifice during the upcoming eclipse. Autloc remains cautious, emphasizing the sanctity of Aztec law and tradition over Barbara's divine claims. The Doctor, inadvertently entangled in a romantic subplot with Cameca, learns about a medallion from Yetaxa's tomb, leading him to suspect a hidden tunnel, which aligns with Ian's growing desire to escape the dangerous situation. Ian overhears Tlotoxl conspiring with Tonila to test Barbara's divinity with poison. The act culminates in a tense confrontation where Barbara, alerted by Ian's frantic warning, exposes Tlotoxl's treachery, refusing the poisoned draught and threatening him with the people's wrath if he dares to reveal her secret. This confrontation solidifies the direct antagonism and raises the stakes for Barbara's continued charade.

Act 2

Following his failed attempt to poison Barbara, Tlotoxl shifts his strategy, realizing Barbara's vulnerability lies in her companions. He learns of Susan's defiant and independent spirit from Tonila, formulating a new plan to exploit this weakness. Tlotoxl orchestrates a forced marriage between Susan and the 'Perfect Victim' who is destined for sacrifice, knowing Susan will refuse, thus incurring a severe punishment under Aztec law. Susan's vehement refusal leads to her condemnation for public scourging and piercing on the day of the eclipse, intensifying the pressure on Barbara. Simultaneously, the Doctor's romantic entanglement with Cameca deepens, culminating in his accidental engagement. Crucially, Cameca gifts him a medallion from Yetaxa's tomb, which, combined with a symbol in the garden, confirms the Doctor's suspicion of a hidden tunnel leading to the tomb. He shares this vital information with Ian, solidifying their escape plan. Barbara, now aware of Susan's impending, brutal punishment, is torn between her duty to maintain her goddess facade and her desperate need to protect Susan. Autloc challenges Barbara, forcing her to confront the moral dilemma of sacrificing the Aztec people's beliefs for her handmaiden's life. The act concludes with Ian departing to investigate the tunnel with the Doctor, unaware that Ixta, now awake and armed, is secretly following him, introducing immediate peril to their escape attempt and leaving the characters in a precarious position.
