The Warriors of Death

After preventing a human sacrifice, Barbara finds herself worshipped as a goddess, forcing her to manipulate Aztec priests while the Doctor and Ian navigate dangerous political intrigues to reunite with her and Susan and escape the temple.

The episode opens with Barbara facing the consequences of her actions, having intervened in a human sacrifice, much to the Doctor's frustration. Her actions have inadvertently placed her in a precarious position, revered as the goddess Yetaxa. Meanwhile, Susan is confined to a seminary, and the Doctor and Ian are left to their own devices amidst the complex power dynamics of the Aztec civilization. Barbara must now play a dangerous game, manipulating the Aztec priests Tlotoxl and Autloc against each other to maintain her facade and protect herself.

Tlotoxl, suspicious of Barbara's divinity, challenges her with questions, while Autloc remains more open to the possibility that she is indeed a goddess. The Doctor, ever curious, seeks to uncover the secrets of the temple, particularly the entrance to a sealed tomb. He encounters Cameca, an Aztec woman who offers assistance, leading him to Ixta, a warrior whose father built the temple. The Doctor hopes Ixta can provide him with the tomb's secrets.

Meanwhile, Ian becomes embroiled in a power struggle of his own. His skill in unarmed combat impresses Autloc, but also draws the ire of Tlotoxl, who seeks to undermine Ian's position. Ixta challenges Ian to a fight, hoping to regain his honor after a previous defeat. The Doctor, seeking to help Ixta to ensure he can obtain the temple drawings, provides him with a substance to weaken his opponent – unaware that Ixta's opponent is Ian. Susan, within the seminary, clashes with Aztec customs and expectations. She refuses to be told whom she will marry, foreshadowing her resistance against the rigid social structures.

As the episode progresses, the tension between Barbara and Tlotoxl escalates. Tlotoxl attempts to expose her as a false goddess, while Autloc remains her protector. The Doctor's meddling puts him in danger when he attempts to warn Ian about Ixta's impending attack. He's arrested for violating temple laws, but Autloc intervenes on Barbara's behalf, securing his release. Barbara, realizing that Ian and Ixta are to fight, attempts to forbid the contest, but Autloc insists, hoping to decide who should lead their army into the pending battles, but she cannot stop that from happening. The scene is set for a clash of strength and wits at sunset, with the Doctor and companions ensnared in a web of political intrigue and manipulation as they try to survive in the heart of the Aztec empire.

Act 1

The first act establishes the immediate repercussions of Barbara's intervention in the human sacrifice, setting the stage for her dangerous new role as the goddess Yetaxa. The Doctor, initially critical of Barbara's actions, advises her to strategically manipulate the High Priests Tlotoxl and Autloc against each other to ensure their survival. Simultaneously, the Doctor embarks on his own quest to uncover the secrets of the temple's sealed tomb, leading him to an encounter with Cameca, who promises to connect him with Ixta, the builder's son. Ian, meanwhile, demonstrates his combat prowess, impressing Autloc but drawing the suspicious gaze and animosity of Tlotoxl. Tlotoxl, determined to undermine Barbara's perceived divinity and eliminate any threats, orchestrates a challenge for Ian, setting the stage for a physical confrontation. Susan's confinement in the seminary introduces her own struggle against Aztec societal norms, particularly her resistance to arranged marriage. This act efficiently introduces the core conflicts and character objectives, establishing the precarious positions of each companion within the Aztec hierarchy and foreshadowing the escalating dangers they face.

Act 2

This act intensifies the various subplots, escalating the stakes for each companion. Tlotoxl further isolates Barbara, forbidding her servants from approaching, thereby increasing her vulnerability and control over her. The Doctor's pursuit of the tomb drawings leads him to Ixta, who reveals his upcoming combat at sunset. Unaware that Ian is Ixta's opponent, the Doctor offers Ixta a poisoned thorn to weaken his adversary in exchange for the drawings, creating a critical moment of dramatic irony that directly endangers Ian. Ian formally accepts Ixta's challenge, with Tlotoxl explicitly encouraging Ixta to kill him, solidifying the malicious intent behind the contest. Concurrently, Barbara begins her strategic manipulation of Autloc, using prophetic warnings of famine and destruction to challenge the necessity of human sacrifice, aiming to sway his religious convictions and undermine Tlotoxl's authority. The Doctor then provides Ixta with the poisoned thorn, cementing the unwitting threat to Ian and setting the stage for a perilous confrontation.

Act 3

The final act brings the converging plotlines to a head, culminating in a series of urgent confrontations and revelations. The Doctor, speaking with Barbara, realizes with dawning horror that the warrior he helped, Ixta, is fighting Ian, meaning he has inadvertently poisoned his friend. This revelation propels him into a desperate attempt to warn Ian, but his violation of temple law leads to his immediate arrest by Tlotoxl, who sees an opportunity to further undermine Barbara. Barbara, demonstrating her growing influence as Yetaxa, appeals to Autloc, successfully securing the Doctor's release by arguing the Doctor's ignorance of the law. Despite her newfound leverage, Barbara cannot prevent the impending contest between Ian and Ixta, as Autloc insists it must proceed to determine the army's leader. Barbara, however, uses her authority to command that the contest remains non-mortal. The episode concludes with the companions entangled in a high-stakes web of political intrigue and impending physical danger, as the sun begins to set on the scheduled fight, leaving Ian's fate uncertain and setting up the next episode's climax.
