A Bargain of Necessity

When The Doctor, Barbara, and Susan are imprisoned during the French Revolution, The Doctor must use his wits to bargain with a corrupt official to save his granddaughter, while Ian's loyalties are tested by enemies closing in.

In revolutionary France, Ian is captured by Leon Colbert, who seeks information about James Stirling. Despite being imprisoned and tortured, Ian refuses to betray his allies. Meanwhile, The Doctor and Barbara are arrested alongside Susan. The Doctor, using his cunning and adopting the guise of a high-ranking official, manages to secure Barbara's release by convincing a jailer to let her escape, hoping she will lead them to other traitors. Barbara escapes and rejoins Jules.

Robespierre tasks LeMaitre with uncovering a plot against him, led by Deputy Paul Barrass. LeMaitre, recognizing The Doctor's potential usefulness, manipulates him by holding Susan captive. He offers The Doctor a bargain: help him find Jules Renan, who is suspected of aiding their enemies, and Susan will be released.

Meanwhile, Ian is rescued by Jules, who reveals himself to be a double agent working against Leon. They reunite with Barbara and learn of The Doctor and Susan's imprisonment. Back at the prison, The Doctor attempts to free Susan. His plan is foiled when her escape is cut short by LeMaitre. LeMaitre confronts The Doctor, revealing that he knows about his companions and their association with Jules. He uses Susan's captivity as leverage to force The Doctor's cooperation in finding Jules, setting the stage for a tense alliance built on deception and desperation as the revolution threatens to consume them all.

Act 1

This act establishes the immediate dangers confronting Ian and the Doctor's group amidst the turmoil of revolutionary France. Ian endures a brutal interrogation by Leon Colbert in a church crypt, steadfastly refusing to betray James Stirling or his allies, despite explicit threats of the guillotine. His unwavering loyalty and resilience are immediately evident. Simultaneously, the Doctor, cunningly disguised as a high-ranking official, reunites with Barbara in prison. Demonstrating his characteristic wit and resourcefulness, the Doctor orchestrates Barbara's escape by manipulating a gullible jailer. He convinces the jailer that allowing Barbara to flee is a strategic move to uncover other 'traitors' and their network. Barbara successfully navigates her way out of the prison, believing the Doctor will soon follow with Susan. Concurrently, the political stakes escalate significantly as Robespierre tasks LeMaitre with urgently uncovering a conspiracy led by Deputy Paul Barrass, which threatens Robespierre's power. This development increases the pressure on LeMaitre to secure vital information and sets the stage for his later, calculated manipulation of the Doctor, as he seeks to leverage any available resource to fulfill Robespierre's critical demands. The act concludes with Barbara's freedom, but the Doctor and Susan remain imprisoned, unaware of the deeper political machinations that will soon ensnare them.

Act 2

This act intensifies the pressure on the Doctor while dramatically resolving Ian's immediate peril. Ian continues to resist Leon's threats, maintaining his loyalty even under duress. His steadfastness is rewarded when Jules Renan dramatically intervenes, rescuing Ian by killing Leon Colbert and revealing himself as a double agent working against the revolutionaries. Ian and Jules then reunite with Barbara, who informs them of the Doctor and Susan's continued imprisonment. This reunion sparks a heated moral debate between Ian and Barbara regarding the revolution's complexities and the justification of Jules's violent actions, highlighting their differing perspectives on the conflict. Back at the prison, the Doctor attempts to free Susan but is intercepted by a returning LeMaitre, who reveals his full knowledge of the Doctor's true identity, his companions, and their association with Jules Renan. Under immense pressure from Robespierre, LeMaitre seizes the opportunity, using Susan's captivity as ultimate leverage. He forces the Doctor into a desperate, morally compromising bargain: lead LeMaitre to Jules Renan's hideout in exchange for Susan's freedom, leaving the Doctor with no choice but to consider betraying an ally to save his granddaughter.
