The Waking Ally

Following the Dalek invasion of Earth, a group of survivors hiding in London's sewers and the Bedfordshire mining area must fight against the Daleks' plan to extract Earth's magnetic core and replace it with a power system, or face the planet's destruction.

In the aftermath of the Dalek invasion of Earth, pockets of resistance struggle to survive and understand the alien invaders' plans. The Doctor, along with Susan, David, and Tyler, seeks refuge in the sewers; they fight off Robomen and continue to investigate the Daleks' activities, suspecting their motives go beyond simple invasion. They deduce the Daleks are after something deep within the Earth.

Meanwhile, Ian and Larry become separated after a mining area rescue attempt. They fall into a Dalek mining operation in Bedfordshire, where enslaved humans are forced to dig. After getting injured, Larry is killed by his own Roboman-converted brother, Phil, in an attempt to save Ian. Ian escapes and seeks to warn others. Barbara and Jenny search for their friends and unknowingly stumble into the mining area themselves. They are captured and forced into labor. Barbara uses her cunning and Dortmun's notes about the rebels' acid bomb to trick the Daleks, claiming to have information about a planned uprising, in hopes of getting closer to the Dalek leadership.

Back at the cliff top, Susan and David are developing a relationship. Together with the Doctor and Tyler, they enjoy a brief moment of rest and discuss the Daleks' plans. The Doctor explains his theory that the Daleks are not simply invaders, but are after something within the Earth's core. He fears they intend to tamper with the planet's life energy, and the group realizes the Daleks' mining operations are proceeding at extreme depths, threatening to trigger a cataclysmic event.

Inside the mine, Ian is able to connect with Wells, another enslaved person, and attempts to contact Barbara before the Daleks capture her. He overhears the Dalek Supreme's plan to remove the Earth's core, and replace it with a power system to turn the planet into a spaceship. Ian hides within a capsule to try and sabotage the operations. As the episode concludes, the Daleks arm their device, setting the capsule in motion, with Ian trapped inside, to eliminate the planet's magnetic and gravitational forces.

Act 1

Act One establishes the immediate dangers and introduces the disparate groups of survivors. Ian and Larry find themselves plummeting into the Dalek mining operation after a narrow escape from a Slyther, immediately placing them within the heart of the Daleks' destructive enterprise. Concurrently, the Doctor, Susan, David, and Tyler navigate the perilous sewers of London, evading Robomen and grappling with the perplexing nature of the Dalek invasion. The Doctor begins to articulate his suspicion that the Daleks' motives extend beyond mere conquest, hinting at a deeper, more existential threat to Earth. Meanwhile, Barbara and Jenny, separated from their companions, seek refuge in a desolate hut, only to be captured by Dalek patrols. Barbara, demonstrating remarkable cunning, devises a plan to infiltrate the Dalek command structure by feigning knowledge of a rebel uprising, using Dortmun's notes as leverage. The act culminates in a tragic and pivotal moment within the mine: Larry, injured and cornered, is confronted by his Roboman-converted brother, Phil. In a desperate act of self-sacrifice, Larry throttles Phil, allowing Ian to escape, but dying in the process. This event transforms Ian's objective from mere survival to a deeply personal mission of vengeance and sabotage, setting the stage for his direct confrontation with the Daleks' core operation. This act effectively positions the key players and raises the initial stakes, highlighting both the physical and emotional toll of the Dalek occupation.

Act 2

Act Two significantly escalates the narrative stakes, moving from localized survival to the imminent threat of planetary destruction. Following Larry's sacrifice, Ian, now alone and driven by grief and a renewed sense of purpose, navigates the treacherous mine, seeking to understand and disrupt the Daleks' operations. His attempts to connect with Barbara are thwarted, underscoring the fragmented nature of the resistance. Simultaneously, the Doctor, Susan, David, and Tyler enjoy a brief respite at a cliff top, allowing the Doctor to fully articulate his chilling theory: the Daleks are not merely invading for resources, but intend to extract Earth's magnetic core and replace it with a power system. This audacious plan would transform Earth into a colossal spaceship, an act of cosmic piracy that threatens the very fabric of the planet's existence. This revelation shifts the conflict from a territorial struggle to a fight for the planet's fundamental integrity. Concurrently, Barbara successfully executes her daring infiltration plan, presenting Dortmun's notes to a Dalek and demanding to speak with a higher authority, gaining access to the Black Dalek. This strategic move positions her closer to the heart of the Dalek command. The act culminates as Ian, hiding within a Dalek capsule, overhears the Dalek Supreme detailing the final phase of "Project Degravitate"—the arming of the penetration explosive to eliminate Earth's gravitational and magnetic forces. The capsule casing then moves forward, trapping Ian inside, setting the stage for a direct, desperate confrontation with the Daleks' ultimate weapon.
