Flashpoint

When the Daleks plot to detonate a bomb at the Earth's core and pilot the planet through space, the Doctor, along with his companions, must thwart their scheme and convince his granddaughter Susan to embrace a new life on Earth with a man she loves.

The episode opens with Ian attempting to sabotage the Dalek's capsule system while Barbara and Jenny are captured and forced into the Dalek's mining operation. The Daleks continue with their plan to detonate a bomb deep within the Earth to extract the molten core, which will allow them to pilot the planet through space. They intend to exterminate all humans after completing the task.

Barbara and Jenny attempt to disrupt the Daleks by manipulating the Robomen, but their efforts are discovered and they are imprisoned, destined to be killed in the explosion. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Tyler arrive, finding a way down into the mine. The Doctor sends David and Susan to sever a cable, hoping to immobilize the Daleks using the mine's geothermal power. Ian escapes from the Daleks and rejoins the Doctor and his companions.

In a daring move, the Doctor exploits the mine's geothermal energy to incapacitate the Daleks, while Barbara reprograms the Robomen to attack their former masters. As the people and Robomen begin to fight back against the Daleks, the Doctor and his companions are reunited. The explosive device is set to detonate, so the Doctor and his companions lead the people to safety outside the valley.

The bomb detonates, destroying the Dalek's saucers and causing a volcanic eruption. In the aftermath, as humanity begins to rebuild, the Doctor prepares to leave. He sees that Susan has found love with David. Realizing that she deserves a normal life, the Doctor makes the difficult decision to lock Susan out of the TARDIS, leaving her on Earth with David. Susan is heartbroken but ultimately accepts her grandfather's decision, choosing love and a stable life over her travels with the Doctor. In the end, Susan drops her TARDIS key, symbolizing her choice to stay on Earth, and walks off with David, ready to start a new chapter in her life.

Act 1

The episode opens with Ian's solo attempt to sabotage the Dalek capsule system, pulling wires to halt its descent, but a Dalek soon discovers his presence, forcing him to escape down a fissure. Simultaneously, Barbara and Jenny, held captive, observe the Daleks' control over the Robomen, sparking an idea for rebellion. They are brought before the Dalek Supreme, who explicitly orders the extermination of all humans and the final preparations for the Earth-piloting scheme. Barbara attempts a diversion, fabricating a story about an imminent human revolt to buy time, but the Daleks eventually imprison her and Jenny, intending for them to die in the impending explosion. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Tyler arrive at the mine, assessing the situation. The Doctor quickly devises a plan, dispatching David and Susan to sever a crucial cable with explosives, aiming to disrupt the Dalek's power source. This act establishes the Daleks' destructive intentions, the initial, desperate human counter-efforts, and the Doctor's strategic entry into the conflict, setting the stage for the direct confrontation.

Act 2

The Doctor and Tyler infiltrate the Dalek control center, while Ian, having recovered, cleverly blocks the descending bomb capsule with timber, causing a delay. The Daleks, unaware of Ian's intervention, proceed with their countdown, believing the bomb is on its way. The Doctor and Tyler then reunite with Barbara and Jenny, freeing them from their restraints. Barbara reveals the Daleks' full plan to detonate a bomb at Earth's core to pilot the planet through space, intensifying the urgency. The Doctor quickly devises a new strategy: he exploits the mine's geothermal energy to overload the Dalek's systems, immobilizing them. Concurrently, Barbara seizes the opportunity to reprogram the Robomen control panel, issuing a new command for them to turn on the Daleks. This leads to a chaotic but decisive battle as the Robomen attack their former masters, effectively neutralizing the Dalek threat within the mine. The companions fully reunite, but the bomb's imminent detonation forces them to prioritize evacuating the area.

Act 3

As the bomb countdown reaches its final moments, the Doctor and his companions lead the remaining humans and newly liberated Robomen to safety outside the valley. The explosive device detonates with catastrophic force, causing a massive volcanic eruption that engulfs and destroys all hovering Dalek saucers, ensuring the complete annihilation of the Dalek invasion force. In the aftermath, with the immediate threat resolved, humanity begins the arduous task of rebuilding. The Doctor, observing Susan's growing affection for David, recognizes her desire for a stable, rooted life. He makes the profound and difficult decision to leave Susan behind on Earth, locking her out of the TARDIS. Susan, initially heartbroken and pleading, ultimately accepts her grandfather's choice, understanding his intent for her happiness and future. She drops her TARDIS key, a symbolic gesture of her commitment to a new life, and walks away with David, ready to embrace a future on Earth, while the Doctor departs alone in the TARDIS.
