Escape to Danger
When the Doctor, Ian and Vicki become pawns in an intergalactic war between the native Menoptra and the insectile Zarbi controlled by a mysterious Animus, they must help the oppressed Menoptra reclaim their planet Vortis before it's too late.
The Doctor, along with his companions Ian and Vicki, find themselves embroiled in a conflict upon landing on the desolate planet Vortis. They quickly discover that Vortis is inhabited by the Zarbi, large, insect-like creatures controlled by a mysterious, unseen force known as the Animus. The Doctor and his friends are captured. The Doctor attempts to parley with the controlling force, while Ian focuses on rescuing Barbara.
During their imprisonment, the Doctor learns of the Menoptra, winged insectoids who are the native inhabitants of Vortis but who have been driven off the planet. Vicki’s accidental reactivation of the TARDIS’s fluid links restores the ship’s power, providing a glimmer of hope.
Ian escapes to search for Barbara, encountering Vrestrin, one of the Menoptra, who explains that the Zarbi were once peaceful inhabitants of Vortis, but they have been corrupted and militarized by the Animus. The Animus also brought the Carsinome, a parasitic growth, to Vortis, threatening to consume the entire planet. Vrestrin reveals that the Menoptra are planning a return to Vortis to reclaim their home. Together, Ian and Vrestrin decide to journey to the Crater of Needles, where Barbara and other captured Menoptra are held.
Meanwhile, the Doctor and Vicki remain prisoners but the Doctor uses his wit and a bit of trickery to gain some leverage. He pretends to possess information about the Menoptra invasion, buying them some time and a little freedom of movement within the Zarbi control center. He continues to gather intelligence about the situation while awaiting Ian's return.
The episode culminates with Ian and Vrestin setting off toward the Crater of Needles, determined to rescue Barbara and the other Menoptra. The Doctor and Vicki are left to continue their subterfuge within the Zarbi stronghold, their fates intertwined with the impending Menoptra invasion and the looming threat of the Animus's dark power.
