The Doctor, Vicki, Ian, and Barbara find themselves on the desolate planet Vortis, a world embroiled in a conflict between the ant-like Zarbi and the butterfly-like Menoptra. Ian and Vrestin become trapped inside a chamber with strange symbols on the walls where grub-like creatures with mind control confront them.
Barbara and Hrostar are in the Crater of Needles where Menoptra slaves are forced to heap vegetation into acid streams for the Carsinome, where the Zarbi reside. They learn this is for the Animus, a terrible force at the center of Vortis. Hrostar explains that an advance team arrived to liberate the slaves ahead of the invasion spearhead but their weapons proved useless the Zarbi captured them and is counting on the newly invented Isop-tope to defeat The Animus. In the control room Vicki and The Doctor discuss using the spider weapon when they are captured and put under mind control of the Animus.
The Doctor learns the Menoptra are massing on Pictos. He is forced to reveal information about the Menoptra invasion in exchange for Vicki's safety, but he gives them false information to ensure their survival. The narrative beats that drive the story
The narrative opens with the companions scattered and in immediate peril across Vortis. Ian and Vrestin find themselves trapped in a mysterious chamber, confronted by crystal-wielding creatures, their situation precarious and unknown. Simultaneously, Barbara and Hrostar endure forced labor in the desolate Crater of Needles, heaping vegetation into acid streams for the unseen Carsinome. Through Hrostar, Barbara learns the grim reality of their enslavement: their efforts fuel the growth of the Animus, a malevolent force at the planet's core. Hrostar reveals the Menoptra's prior failed attempt to liberate slaves, their weapons proving useless against the ubiquitous Zarbi, and their desperate hope resting on an untested invention, the Isop-tope. Meanwhile, in a control room, the Doctor and Vicki discuss their strategic use of a spider weapon, only to be swiftly captured and subjected to the Animus's mind control. Under this oppressive influence, the Doctor is coerced into revealing information about the Menoptra invasion. He strategically provides false intelligence, claiming the Menoptra are massing on Pictos, a calculated deception to ensure Vicki's safety and their own survival, while subtly gleaning crucial details about the true invasion. He then instructs Vicki to retrieve his walking stick, believing it holds a key to counteracting the Zarbi's power. As alarms blare across the Crater of Needles, the Menoptra slaves are herded into an enclosure, prompting Hrostar to fear a betrayal. Barbara staunchly defends the Doctor, but Hrostar's revelation that the spearhead plans to land on Sayo Plateau, directly above them, intensifies the sense of impending disaster and potential compromise. This act establishes the multifaceted threats, the companions' immediate struggles, and the Doctor's initial, risky maneuver to gain an advantage.

This act plunges deeper into the companions' desperate attempts to resist and escape, while the Menoptra's carefully planned invasion faces catastrophic compromise. In the mysterious chamber, Ian and Vrestin endure a bizarre 'questioning' by giant caterpillar-like creatures, the Optera, who solidify their hands in a strange liquid, believing them to be destructive invaders from the surface. This subplot introduces a new, subterranean faction with their own grievances and fears. Concurrently, in the Crater of Needles, Barbara, Hrostar, Prapillus, and Hlynia formulate a daring plan: they must destroy the larvae gun guarding their enclosure and then race to Sayo Plateau to warn the incoming Menoptra spearhead of the Zarbi forces lying in wait. Prapillus, leveraging his knowledge of the Zarbi, bravely distracts a guard, allowing Hrostar to destroy the formidable larvae gun, clearing their path to the surface. Back in the control room, the Doctor and Vicki execute a perilous counter-move. Vicki uses the captured spider to control a Zarbi, creating a diversion, while the Doctor, utilizing his walking stick, snatches a control collar. He then ingeniously connects the collar to the astral map, overloading the control circuit and temporarily reversing the mind-control signal. However, this triumph is short-lived. A recorded message, intercepted by the Zarbi, reveals the Menoptra spearhead's true landing coordinates: bearing two six five, targeting Sayo Plateau. The Doctor is swiftly recaptured, and Vicki is re-collared, leaving them once again under the Animus's dominion. The act culminates with Barbara, Hrostar, and Hlynia reaching the plateau, only to witness Zarbi forces converging, confirming their worst fears: the invasion has been betrayed, and the spearhead is heading into a deadly ambush. This sequence of events dramatically escalates the stakes, highlighting both the ingenuity and the vulnerability of the protagonists.
The final act intensifies the immediate peril facing the Menoptra invasion and pivots towards an unexpected alliance. On the exposed plateau, Barbara, Hrostar, and Hlynia observe the Zarbi forces moving to encircle the landing zone. Hrostar, witnessing the coordinated Zarbi response, concludes with bitter certainty that the Doctor must have betrayed them, a suspicion that adds a layer of emotional conflict and distrust to their already dire situation. This perceived betrayal casts a shadow over the Doctor's earlier actions and the Menoptra's desperate hopes. Meanwhile, in the subterranean chamber, Ian and Vrestin face a death sentence from the Optera, who accuse them of being surface invaders intent on preying upon them. The Optera, a devolved form of Menoptra, are deeply entrenched in their fear and ignorance, bowing to the very symbols on the walls that represent their forgotten kinsmen. Vrestin, however, makes a passionate and critical intervention. He identifies himself as Menoptra, directly challenging the Optera's insular worldview. He recounts the shared history of enslavement by the Zarbi and the Animus, explaining how the dark power has spread its poisonous web across Vortis, affecting both their peoples. Vrestin eloquently argues that the "wilderness" above ground, which the Optera fear, is their rightful heritage, a place of peace, beauty, and light from which they were unjustly driven. He urges them to recognize their kinship and join the fight against their common oppressor. As a powerful gesture of proof and identity, Vrestin opens his wings, a symbol of their shared, yet forgotten, heritage. This dramatic revelation and Vrestin's compelling plea succeed in swaying the Optera, who bow in recognition and respect. The act concludes with the forging of this unlikely alliance, offering a glimmer of hope and a new, formidable force to counter the Zarbi, even as the Menoptra spearhead remains unknowingly on a collision course with disaster.
