The Centre
The Doctor and his companions arrive on the planet Vortis, where they must confront the Animus, a parasitic entity controlling the insect-like Zarbi, to restore balance and save the Menoptra from enslavement before the Animus spreads its influence across the galaxy.
The TARDIS arrives on the desolate planet Vortis, where the Doctor, Ian, Barbara, and Vicki find themselves caught in a conflict between the butterfly-like Menoptra and the ant-like Zarbi, who are controlled by a mysterious force known as the Animus. The Animus seeks to conquer not only Vortis but also the Earth, desiring to absorb human intelligence and technology.
The Doctor and his companions are quickly separated. Barbara and the Menoptra work together to fight the Zarbi soldiers and disable their weapons, while Ian unites with a group of primitive, flightless Menoptra who live underground and know the location of a water source the winged Menoptra have been unable to reach. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Vicki are captured by the Animus, who intends to extract the Doctor's intelligence.
The Menoptra, led by Prapillus, and his companions coordinate an assault to recapture the city that is under Zarbi control. The group fights valiantly in the Carsinome corridors. One Menoptra sacrifices himself, with the others vowing to complete his mission. Through strategy and cunning, they succeed in infiltrating the Animus's chamber at the center of the web planet. The Menoptra's knowledge of the web and the planet's structure help the Earthlings disrupt the Animus's control over the Zarbi.
As the Animus attempts to drain the Doctor's mind, Barbara uses a device to disrupt the Animus's power, just as Ian arrives to assist. In a final act of desperation, Barbara ineffectively points a weapon at the creature but it slips out of her hand. Miraculously, this is enough to destroy the Animus, shattering its influence over Vortis and freeing the Zarbi from its control. With the Animus defeated, water begins to flow again on Vortis, promising renewed life and prosperity for the Menoptra. The Doctor and his companions depart in the TARDIS, leaving the Menoptra to rebuild their civilization and establish peace with the freed Zarbi. As the TARDIS dematerializes, the Menoptra praise the Earth people for saving them from the Animus.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The episode opens with the Doctor and Vicki captured by the Animus, who explicitly states its intention to extract the Doctor's intelligence and expand its parasitic influence to Earth. Simultaneously, Barbara, Prapillus, and a group of Menoptra engage in strategic skirmishes against the Zarbi, luring them into traps and suffering a casualty when Hrostar sacrifices himself to disable a larvae gun. This early loss underscores the high stakes and the Menoptra's resolve. Meanwhile, Ian, with Vrestin and Hetra, discovers a vital water source underground, choked by the Animus's presence, sparking hope for the flightless Menoptra's future but also revealing their deep-seated fear of the surface. As the Doctor and Vicki are taken deeper into the Animus's organic chamber, the creature boasts about its power and plans for galactic conquest, increasing the pressure on the companions. Barbara's group, after securing a control room and capturing a Zarbi, attempts to use the Doctor's astral map to contact their main force. However, they discover the crucial Isop-tope device is missing, leading Barbara to deduce the Doctor's capture. This realization forces a critical shift in strategy: instead of waiting for reinforcements, Barbara, Hilio, and Prapillus commit to a direct assault on the Animus's core, signaling the end of the initial setup and the full commitment to the episode's central conflict.

With the decision made to confront the Animus directly, Barbara, Prapillus, Hilio, and Hlynia embark on a perilous journey through the Carsinome corridors, battling Zarbi forces. Hilio reminds the group of the Isop-tope's critical function: to target the Animus's 'dark side.' They employ a risky maneuver, throwing the Isop-tope between them to distract the Zarbi and ensure at least one of them reaches the Animus's chamber. Simultaneously, Ian, Vrestin, and Hetra, having found the underground water source, attempt to breach the Animus's chamber from below, struggling against the organic material of the planet's core. The Animus, now actively ensnaring the Doctor and Vicki, reveals its grand ambition to absorb Earth's technology and human mastery of space, intensifying the urgency of the companions' mission. As Barbara's group finally bursts into the brightly lit Animus chamber, they are momentarily disoriented. Barbara attempts to use the Isop-tope as instructed, but it appears ineffective against the creature. Just as despair sets in, Ian emerges from the floor beneath the Animus, creating a crucial distraction. In a final, desperate moment, Barbara falls, causing the Isop-tope to point upwards. This accidental alignment triggers the Animus's destruction, culminating in a dramatic collapse and the creature's death, freeing the Doctor and Vicki and resolving the immediate threat.
