Act 1

The Doctor and Vicki navigate the emotional aftermath of their companions' departure, with Vicki reaffirming her commitment to staying despite the Doctor's gentle probing. Their quiet journey is dramatically interrupted by Steven, a disoriented pilot who unexpectedly emerges from the TARDIS's living quarters. Steven, a man grounded in conventional science, expresses profound skepticism regarding the TARDIS's nature as a time machine, challenging the Doctor's claims with disbelief and logical questions. Determined to validate their temporal capabilities and convince Steven, the Doctor decides to land the TARDIS on Earth to provide tangible proof of their travels. This act meticulously establishes the nascent dynamic of the new trio, highlighting Steven's initial resistance to the extraordinary, and introduces the first external antagonist as a mysterious Monk observes the TARDIS materializing on a desolate beach. This sets the stage for the unfolding temporal mystery.

Act 2

The TARDIS materializes on a beach, where the Doctor discovers a distinctive Viking helmet. He uses this artifact as compelling evidence to pinpoint their landing in 10th or 11th century England. Steven, however, remains steadfast in his skepticism, dismissing the helmet as a mere costume piece or child's toy, further exasperating the Doctor. Faced with Steven's persistent disbelief and a minor technical hitch affecting the TARDIS's chameleon circuit, the Doctor decides to seek out a local village for more definitive proof. He separates from Vicki and Steven, who opt for a more arduous climb up the cliffs while the Doctor takes a longer, more deliberate route. The Doctor eventually enters a village hut, engaging with Edith, a local woman. Through their conversation, he learns about a nearby, long-deserted monastery that has been mysteriously reoccupied by unseen monks. With further questioning, the Doctor shrewdly deduces their precise historical context: Northumbria, 1066, a critical juncture just before the impending Viking invasion and the pivotal Battle of Hastings. This act firmly establishes the historical setting and introduces the central enigma of the Monk and the reclusive monastery.

Act 3

Armed with the critical knowledge of their exact time and place, the Doctor fully grasps the profound historical significance of their landing in 1066, recognizing the imminent Viking invasion and the Battle of Hastings. His suspicions intensify regarding the monastery's sudden reoccupation and the monks' secretive nature, leading him to conclude that temporal interference is actively disrupting history. Ignoring Vicki's cautious advice, the Doctor resolves to investigate the monastery directly, convinced it holds the key to unraveling the historical anomaly. Simultaneously, Steven and Vicki, having become disoriented and lost within the dense forest, unexpectedly encounter a fleeing villager. Steven apprehends the villager, who inadvertently drops a modern wristwatch. This anachronistic object provides irrefutable, tangible proof of temporal meddling, finally shattering Steven's skepticism and confirming the TARDIS's true nature as a time machine. The act culminates dramatically as the Doctor arrives at the monastery, its previously bolted door mysteriously unbolting and swinging open, drawing him directly into the heart of the temporal plot and setting the stage for the next phase of their adventure.
