The Meddling Monk

When the Doctor, Steven, and Vicki land in 1066 Northumbria, they discover a mysterious Monk with advanced technology who is meddling with history to aid the Viking invasion, threatening to erase England's future.

The Doctor, Vicki, and Steven arrive in 1066, just before the Battle of Hastings. They soon realize something is amiss when Vicki notices an anachronistic artifact. Exploring the area, they encounter wary villagers and a seemingly benevolent Monk residing in a local monastery. Steven and Vicki become separated from the Doctor, who is captured by the Monk.

While searching for the Doctor, Steven and Vicki are apprehended by Saxon villagers suspicious of their strange clothing. They learn of an old man matching the Doctor's description who visited the monastery. After being freed, they seek out the monastery, where the Monk denies having seen their friend, giving them a false description of the Doctor's appearance, which tips Steven off that he's lying. Steven and Vicki suspect the Monk is holding the Doctor captive.

Meanwhile, a Viking longship approaches the coast. The Monk observes their arrival with anticipation, using binoculars. The Vikings, led by Sven and Ulf, prepare to raid the villages. They attack a nearby village, pillaging and raping Edith, a villager who had aided Steven and Vicki. The villagers, led by Wulnoth and Eldred, seek revenge, resulting in a skirmish where several Vikings and Saxons are killed or wounded. Wulnoth brings the injured Eldred to the monastery for help.

Steven and Vicki decide to break into the monastery to rescue the Doctor. They are almost caught as the Monk plays a gramophone to mask their movements. The Monk welcomes Wulnoth and Eldred into the monastery. Steven and Vicki find the Doctor imprisoned in a cell.

The narrative beats that drive the story

Act 1

The narrative commences by firmly establishing the Doctor's predicament: he is a captive within the monastery, refusing to engage with the enigmatic Monk who serves him a perfunctory breakfast. Meanwhile, Steven and Vicki awaken disoriented in the forest, their immediate concern being the Doctor's whereabouts and the anachronistic nature of their surroundings, highlighted by Vicki's observation of a modern watch. Their search for sustenance is abruptly interrupted when suspicious Saxon villagers, led by Eldred and Wulnoth, apprehend them. During a tense interrogation, Edith, a sympathetic villager, reveals that an old man matching the Doctor's description recently passed through the village, heading towards the local monastery. This crucial piece of information provides Steven and Vicki with a tangible lead. Despite Eldred's strong suspicions of the newcomers being Viking spies, Wulnoth, the more pragmatic headman, decides to release Steven and Vicki, instructing them to proceed to the monastery. This act meticulously sets the stage, confirming the Doctor's imprisonment, establishing Steven and Vicki's immediate objective, and introducing the initial layer of local conflict and suspicion, propelling them directly towards the antagonist's stronghold.

Act 2

As Steven and Vicki set their course for the monastery, the true, sinister nature of the Monk begins to unravel. He is observed on a clifftop, eagerly scanning the horizon with binoculars, his anticipation culminating in an exultant "At last!" upon sighting a Viking longship. This pivotal moment unambiguously reveals his complicity in the impending invasion, transforming him from a benevolent recluse into a historical meddler. Steven and Vicki arrive at the monastery, seeking their friend. The Monk, employing a facade of monastic hospitality, denies any knowledge of the Doctor. However, his attempt to provide a fabricated description of the Doctor—complete with "strange checked trousers"—is a clumsy error that immediately exposes his deception to Steven. This confirmation solidifies Steven and Vicki's conviction that the Doctor is indeed held captive within the monastery walls. Realizing the Monk's treachery, they resolve to infiltrate the monastery under the cover of darkness to rescue their friend. Concurrently, the Viking landing party, led by Sven and Ulf, initiates a brutal and swift raid on the nearby Saxon village. This assault culminates in the tragic rape of Edith and a violent skirmish between the Saxons and Vikings, resulting in casualties on both sides, including the death of Gunnar and the severe wounding of Eldred. This act significantly escalates the stakes, clearly defines the antagonist's role, and interweaves the personal quest for the Doctor with the broader historical conflict.

Act 3

The narrative crescendos as multiple perilous plotlines converge upon the monastery. Steven and Vicki, under the cloak of night, execute their plan to infiltrate the Monk's stronghold, determined to liberate the Doctor. They navigate the monastery's labyrinthine corridors, their movements inadvertently masked by the Monk's gramophone, which he uses to create a sonic cover. This element of dramatic irony heightens the tension as they draw closer to their objective. Simultaneously, a new and immediate threat arrives at the monastery door: Wulnoth, the Saxon headman, carrying the severely wounded Eldred, desperately seeking the Monk's aid for his injured companion. The Monk, maintaining his deceptive persona, welcomes the Saxons, creating a dangerous and unexpected convergence of protagonists, antagonists, and innocent bystanders within the monastery's walls. As the Monk is distracted by the arrival of Wulnoth and Eldred, Steven and Vicki locate the Doctor's cell. With urgency, Steven begins the delicate task of picking the lock, poised at the precipice of their rescue attempt. This act masterfully orchestrates a multi-layered climax, bringing the separate threads of the Doctor's captivity, Steven and Vicki's rescue mission, and the Saxon-Viking conflict into a single, high-stakes location, leaving the outcome hanging in a precarious balance.
