A Battle of Wits

The Doctor investigates a mysterious Monk in 11th-century Northumbria who is disrupting history by aiding Viking invaders, forcing the Doctor to uncover the Monk's scheme and prevent irreversible alterations to the timeline.

In 1066 Northumbria, the Doctor, along with his companions Vicki and Steven, uncovers a plot by a Time Monk to alter the course of history. The Doctor arrives in a village preparing for an impending Viking invasion. He learns from Edith that her husband and the village men have already left to join Harold Godwinson's army. The Doctor realizes the Monk's involvement cannot be a coincidence, suspects the Vikings are not the only threat, and rushes to confront the Monk.

Vicki and Steven, searching for the Doctor, discover a secret passage and a hidden high-tech gun pointing towards the sea, confirming their suspicions about the Monk's advanced technology and nefarious intentions. The Doctor confronts the Monk inside the monastery, but the Monk evades him and manipulates local villagers into lighting beacon fires. These fires are intended to guide the Viking fleet, not to warn of their arrival. The Doctor is captured by Vikings, Sven and Ulf, who sought refuge in the monastery, after being ambushed.

Vicki and Steven find and release the Doctor, but their troubles are far from over. The Monk, meanwhile, is revealed to be using advanced technology to manipulate events, including preparing for the arrival of the Norman invaders after the Vikings. He plans to accelerate England's technological advancement by giving advanced technology to the saxons after manipulating the viking invasions and the battle of hastings. The Doctor must stop the Monk from changing history.

The Doctor discovers the Monk's progress chart which has a list of the Monk's goals and sees that they are almost all complete. He now intends to light the beacon fires. The Doctor is captured, later to be rescued. He then speaks to Wulnoth about the planned invasion and gets Wulnoth to ready the beacon fires. Vicki and Steven continue to investigate the monastery.

As the Vikings prepare to signal their fleet, Steven and Vicki find a concealed atomic cannon. The Doctor confronts the Monk. He then sabotages the Monk's plans and restores the timeline, ensuring that history unfolds as it should. He reprograms the atomic cannon to set the Vikings back out to sea.

Act 1

Vicki and Steven begin their search for the Doctor by investigating a locked cell, where they find his cloak. They deduce his escape through a secret passage, which they then use to exit the monastery, hoping to reunite with him. Concurrently, the Doctor, having already left the monastery through a rear entrance, learns from Edith about a small band of Vikings and the village men's departure to join Harold Godwinson's army. This information, combined with his prior knowledge, leads him to the critical realization that the Monk's presence and actions are intrinsically linked to a larger, deliberate disruption of history. He understands the urgency of confronting the Monk to prevent irreversible alterations. Meanwhile, Vicki and Steven's search takes them to a clifftop where they discover a sophisticated, hidden gun aimed at the sea. This anachronistic technology serves as undeniable proof of the Monk's advanced capabilities and confirms his malicious intent to manipulate the timeline. Armed with this knowledge, they resolve to return to the monastery. The Doctor, having made his own way back, confronts the Monk inside the monastery, using a simple branch to feign a weapon, forcing the Monk to acknowledge his presence. This initial, tense encounter establishes the direct conflict between the Doctor and the Monk, setting the stage for their battle of wits and the Doctor's mission to restore the historical integrity of 11th-century Northumbria.

Act 2

The Monk, after tending to Eldred and confirming the Viking fleet's imminent arrival, reviews his progress chart, which details his multi-stage plan to manipulate history, including the crucial step of "Light Beacon Fires." He plans to use local villagers to achieve this. The Doctor, having captured the Monk, attempts to interrogate him, but the Monk cleverly uses an external knocking at the door as a distraction, trying to force the Doctor into a compromising position. The Doctor sees through the ruse and, disguised in a monk's habit, opens the door himself, only to be immediately ambushed and captured by Sven and Ulf, two Vikings seeking refuge. They imprison the Doctor in a cell. However, the Monk, seizing the opportunity, ambushes and ties up Ulf in the chapel, demonstrating his cunning and self-preservation. While the Doctor is imprisoned, the Monk manipulates Wulnoth into preparing the beacon fires, falsely claiming they are for guiding building materials, thus advancing his scheme to guide the Viking fleet. The Doctor, ever resourceful, escapes his cell by ambushing Sven, who was guarding him. Free once more, the Doctor immediately confronts the Monk, placing a sword at his throat and demanding answers about the fires, signaling a critical turning point and a renewed offensive against the Monk's escalating plot.

Act 3

Following the Doctor's dramatic re-confrontation with the Monk regarding the beacon fires, the narrative shifts towards a final push to uncover the Monk's ultimate weapon and thwart his plans. While the Doctor presses the Monk for information, Vicki and Steven continue their meticulous investigation of the monastery. Their search leads them to a crucial discovery in the chapel: a hidden cable emerging from the altar, indicating a concealed compartment or door. This finding directly points to the presence of the atomic cannon mentioned in the narrative foundation, which the Monk had positioned to manipulate the Viking invasion. The Doctor, now fully aware of the Monk's advanced technology and his intention to use the beacon fires to guide the Viking fleet, must act decisively. The stage is set for the Doctor to sabotage the Monk's elaborate scheme. He will utilize the atomic cannon, not as the Monk intended, but by reprogramming it to repel the Viking fleet, thereby ensuring that history unfolds as it should, with Harold Godwinson's forces facing the Vikings in the Humber and ultimately losing at Hastings to William the Conqueror, thus restoring the integrity of the timeline.
