Act 1

The TARDIS materializes outside a police station in 1960s England on Christmas Day, immediately drawing the attention of baffled local officers. The Doctor, concerned about the "poisonous atmosphere" (which is merely urban pollution), insists on repairing the TARDIS scanner himself, despite Steven and Sara's protests. His brief venture outside results in his swift apprehension and questioning by the Inspector, who finds his claims of universal travel outlandish. Steven, observing the Doctor's predicament, dons a discarded police uniform to infiltrate the station, intending to rescue him but instead getting mistaken for a new recruit. Simultaneously, Sara emerges from the TARDIS to attempt repairs, only to be confronted by a constable who dismisses her as a "joker." This act establishes the episode's comedic tone, the companions' initial naiveté regarding Earth customs, and their entanglement with local authorities, setting the stage for their escape and subsequent misadventures.

Act 2

Steven, still in his police disguise, successfully 'takes charge' of the Doctor, convincing the Inspector he can manage the eccentric old man, and escorts him out. Sara, having been detained, uses an elbow to break free from a constable. The trio then makes a frantic dash back into the TARDIS, which dematerializes just as the baffled officers close in, leaving them wondering about the vanishing police box. Inside the TARDIS, they confirm the scanner is fixed and discuss the taranium, recalling the ongoing threat of the Daleks. The TARDIS then unexpectedly materializes inside what appears to be a wood mill, but is in fact a bustling Hollywood film set. Steven, still in his police uniform, intervenes dramatically to 'save' a screaming actress from a prop buzzsaw, disrupting the filming. Sara's combat skills are showcased as they fend off angry crew members, leading to a chaotic chase through various film sets, separating the companions and escalating their accidental involvement in the movie productions.

Act 3

The Doctor is mistaken for Professor Webster, an expert on Arabian customs, and inadvertently finds himself directing a scene. Using this opportunity, he discovers Sara hidden in a chest on the set, freeing her from a wardrobe mix-up. Meanwhile, Steven, having escaped a Keystone Kops scene he was forced into, removes his police uniform to avoid further misunderstandings and reunites with the Doctor and Sara. Realizing the extent of the chaos they have caused, the trio decides to make a swift return to the TARDIS, describing the studio as a 'madhouse.' Film director Green spots Steven and Sara attempting to sneak back to the TARDIS, initiating a final, frantic chase across the sets. During their escape, the Doctor briefly encounters a dejected clown leaning against the TARDIS, engaging in a brief, philosophical exchange about comedy. Steven and Sara race back, further disrupting Ingmar Knopf's filming, before finally reaching the TARDIS. They pull the Doctor inside just as the crew closes in, and the TARDIS dematerializes, leaving the filmmakers utterly bewildered by the impossible disappearing act and the belated arrival of the real Professor Webster.
