The Hall of Dolls

The Doctor's companions, Steven and Dodo, must navigate a series of deadly games orchestrated by the Celestial Toymaker, including a perilous chair game, to escape his realm and prevent the Doctor from becoming his eternal plaything.

Steven and Dodo find themselves trapped in a dimension controlled by the Celestial Toymaker, who forces them to play a series of bizarre and deadly games. Their immediate challenge involves a room with numbered chairs, each posing a unique threat. The Toymaker, meanwhile, holds the Doctor captive and engages him in a complex game of his own, the stakes of which are the Doctor's eternal servitude if his companions fail to find their TARDIS before he completes his game.

As Steven and Dodo explore, they encounter a seemingly harmless panelled door with a numeric display. Recognizing this as a delaying tactic, they quickly bypass it. Reaching the Chair Room, they're greeted by a riddle that hints at the deadly nature of the chairs. They also encounter the King and Queen of Hearts, along with Cyril the Knave and the Joker, all characters warped by the Toymaker into becoming players in his twisted games. The King and Queen are also searching for a throne that if not found will keep them as playing cards for eternity.

The companions soon realize the chairs are not merely obstacles but lethal traps. One chair electrocutes a doll, another cuts it in half with a blade, and yet another makes the doll and the chair disappear completely. The King and Queen, desperate to escape their card-like existence, offer a plan regarding the dolls. However, Steven remains distrustful, wary that they are pawns of the Toymaker.

Steven and Dodo, trying to gain an advantage, discover additional dolls hidden in a cupboard. Mistrusting the king and queen, they try to keep the extra dolls a secret. Tensions rise as the King and Queen discover the deception, accusing Steven and Dodo of cheating. To resolve the stalemate, the King decides to use the Joker to pick a chair.

In a moment of desperation, Dodo decides to take a gamble, attempting to sit in one of the chairs herself. She chooses incorrectly, and the chair begins to freeze her. Steven, with immense effort, manages to pull her from the chair, saving her life but bringing them closer to failure. Despite their near-death experience, Steven and Dodo now continue on, still determined to find a way to outwit the Toymaker and escape his domain.

Act 1

Steven and Dodo bypass a seemingly complex, bolted door, recognizing it as a delaying tactic by the Toymaker. They enter the First Chair Room, discovering three elaborate numbered thrones. Simultaneously, the Toymaker, engaged in his own game with the Doctor, silences the Doctor after he attempts to warn his companions about the chairs. The Toymaker then introduces the Heart family—the King, Queen, Cyril the Knave, and the Joker—as new opponents for Steven and Dodo, transforming them from playing cards into players in his twisted game. The King and Queen reveal their own predicament: they must find a specific throne to avoid eternal servitude as playing cards. Steven and Dodo encounter the riddle describing the chairs, understanding their deadly nature, but initially dismiss the King and Queen as mere distractions. The Queen, frustrated by the King's inattention, urges him to focus on their quest for the throne.

Act 2

Steven and Dodo discover a Second Chair Room containing four more chairs and four cupboards. They deduce that six of the seven chairs are dangerous, with only one safe. Steven opens a cupboard, revealing dolls, which Dodo immediately recognizes as tools to test the chairs. Steven, wary of the dolls' potential danger, eventually agrees to use them. They find additional dolls in another cupboard, deciding to keep these extra dolls secret from the King and Queen to gain an advantage. The King and Queen follow them, discovering the dolls and Dodo's plan to test the chairs. Dodo, in a moment of frustration, challenges the Queen's reality as a playing card, prompting the Queen to assert her and the King's genuine humanity and their shared victimhood under the Toymaker. They propose a joint strategy to test the chairs using the dolls, each choosing one. Steven, still distrustful, agrees to let the King and Queen test chairs in their room, while he and Dodo return to the First Chair Room with their own dolls, maintaining their deception about the additional dolls.

Act 3

In the First Chair Room, Steven and Dodo continue testing chairs with dolls, observing a doll electrocuted and another cut in half. Cyril, awakened by the commotion, flees in fear. Meanwhile, in the Second Chair Room, the King and Queen test their doll, which, along with its chair, vanishes completely. Realizing their need for more dolls, the King suggests using the Joker. Steven and Dodo, having exhausted their dolls in the First Chair Room, realize they must retrieve the hidden dolls. The King and Queen arrive, discovering Steven and Dodo's deception about the extra dolls and accusing them of cheating. The King, undeterred, nudges the Joker awake, intending to use him to test the remaining chair. Dodo, in a desperate act, sits in chair number two herself, which immediately begins to freeze her. Steven, despite also feeling the cold, exerts immense effort to pull Dodo from the freezing chair, saving her life. They acknowledge their failure in this specific game, but Steven expresses relief for Dodo's safety.
