The Hall of Dolls
The Doctor's companions, Steven and Dodo, must navigate a series of deadly games orchestrated by the Celestial Toymaker, including a perilous chair game, to escape his realm and prevent the Doctor from becoming his eternal plaything.
Steven and Dodo find themselves trapped in a dimension controlled by the Celestial Toymaker, who forces them to play a series of bizarre and deadly games. Their immediate challenge involves a room with numbered chairs, each posing a unique threat. The Toymaker, meanwhile, holds the Doctor captive and engages him in a complex game of his own, the stakes of which are the Doctor's eternal servitude if his companions fail to find their TARDIS before he completes his game.
As Steven and Dodo explore, they encounter a seemingly harmless panelled door with a numeric display. Recognizing this as a delaying tactic, they quickly bypass it. Reaching the Chair Room, they're greeted by a riddle that hints at the deadly nature of the chairs. They also encounter the King and Queen of Hearts, along with Cyril the Knave and the Joker, all characters warped by the Toymaker into becoming players in his twisted games. The King and Queen are also searching for a throne that if not found will keep them as playing cards for eternity.
The companions soon realize the chairs are not merely obstacles but lethal traps. One chair electrocutes a doll, another cuts it in half with a blade, and yet another makes the doll and the chair disappear completely. The King and Queen, desperate to escape their card-like existence, offer a plan regarding the dolls. However, Steven remains distrustful, wary that they are pawns of the Toymaker.
Steven and Dodo, trying to gain an advantage, discover additional dolls hidden in a cupboard. Mistrusting the king and queen, they try to keep the extra dolls a secret. Tensions rise as the King and Queen discover the deception, accusing Steven and Dodo of cheating. To resolve the stalemate, the King decides to use the Joker to pick a chair.
In a moment of desperation, Dodo decides to take a gamble, attempting to sit in one of the chairs herself. She chooses incorrectly, and the chair begins to freeze her. Steven, with immense effort, manages to pull her from the chair, saving her life but bringing them closer to failure. Despite their near-death experience, Steven and Dodo now continue on, still determined to find a way to outwit the Toymaker and escape his domain.
