The Dancing Floor

The Doctor's companions, Steven and Dodo, must win the Toymaker's game of 'Hunt the Key' and escape the deadly 'Dancing Floor' before the Doctor loses his own game and they are trapped in the Toymaker's world forever.

Steven and Dodo find themselves trapped in a series of the Toymaker's twisted games. They face a pair of animated dolls, Sergeant Rugg and Mrs. Wiggs, in a chaotic kitchen where they must find a key hidden within a pie to unlock the door to the next challenge. The Toymaker, meanwhile, taunts the Doctor as he plays a complex game of Trilogic, raising the stakes with each move.

Steven and Dodo solve the kitchen game by finding the key, leading them to a ballroom with a lethal dance floor. They discover that stepping onto the floor forces them to dance uncontrollably, and animated ballerina dolls advance toward them, threatening to trap them in an eternal waltz. Rugg and Wiggs reappear, now under the Toymaker's direct orders to stop Steven and Dodo from reaching a TARDIS replica at the end of the dance floor. The companions realize they must reach the TARDIS before the dolls can capture them.

As the Doctor continues his game, Steven and Dodo dance their way toward the police box. Manipulating the dance to their advantage, they reach the TARDIS replica just as Sergeant Rugg attempts to stop them. They dive inside, but find themselves in another fake TARDIS, essentially a cupboard, with no apparent way out. Dodo reflects on the lifelike and sometimes unpredictable nature of the Toymaker's creations, making Steven uneasy about her state of mind. Undeterred, Steven searches for a clue to their next challenge.

Discovering a riddle on the cupboard wall—"Lady Luck will show the way, win the game or here you'll stay"—they soon reveal another passageway, leading them to the next, unknown game, while the Toymaker replaces his defeated pawns and prepares for a more deadly challenge.

Act 1

The Toymaker sets Steven and Dodo's next challenge, introducing Sergeant Rugg and Mrs. Wiggs as their new adversaries. Trapped in a corridor, the animated dolls pursue the companions, herding them into an old-fashioned kitchen. Inside, Rugg, a ruddy-faced policeman, and Wiggs, a household cook, reveal the riddle for their current game: "Hunt the key to fit the door that leads out on the dancing floor. Then escape the rhythmic beat, or you'll forever tap your feet." Steven and Dodo deduce they must find a hidden key within the kitchen to unlock the next area. Their search is complicated by the bickering dolls, whose escalating arguments and food fights serve as deliberate distractions orchestrated by the Toymaker. Dodo, however, cleverly leverages Rugg and Wiggs's squabbles, prompting them to inadvertently reveal the key's location within a pie. Upon finding the key, Steven and Dodo quickly exit the kitchen. The Toymaker then reappears to his defeated pawns, expressing his displeasure by smashing a plate as a warning. He explicitly orders Rugg and Wiggs to clean themselves up, proceed to the dancing floor, and prevent Steven and Dodo from reaching the TARDIS replica at all costs, thereby significantly raising the stakes for the next phase of the game.

Act 2

Steven and Dodo enter the next room, a grand ballroom featuring a raised triangular dais—the titular dancing floor—and, at its far end, a familiar police box form, which they identify as the TARDIS. They cautiously approach the floor, testing its surface, and discover that touching it triggers music, confirming the riddle's warning about the "rhythmic beat." Their apprehension intensifies when Rugg and Wiggs reappear, now clean and under direct orders from the Toymaker to prevent the companions from reaching the TARDIS. Steven, attempting a quick dash across the floor, is immediately ensnared by its magic, forced into an uncontrollable dance as animated ballerina dolls advance towards him. Dodo, despite Steven's warnings, also steps onto the floor, becoming trapped in the involuntary rhythm. Rugg and Wiggs, attempting to fulfill their new directive, also fall victim to the dance, their efforts to reach the TARDIS thwarted by their own compelled movements. Through a combination of determination and clever manipulation of their forced dance, Steven and Dodo manage to maneuver their way to the TARDIS replica, diving inside just as Rugg attempts to intercept them. Their momentary triumph quickly turns to dismay as they discover the "TARDIS" is merely another fake, a cramped cupboard. This false victory is compounded by Dodo's unsettling reflection that the Toymaker's creations possess "wills and minds of their own," a notion that deeply disturbs Steven and adds a new, psychological layer to their predicament, suggesting the games are more insidious than mere physical challenges.

Act 3

Trapped within the confines of the fake TARDIS—a mere cupboard—Steven frantically searches for an exit or a clue to their next challenge. Dodo's earlier unsettling observations about the Toymaker's creations having independent wills continue to trouble him, highlighting the psychological toll the games are taking. Meanwhile, the discarded pawns, Sergeant Rugg and Mrs. Wiggs, are shown still dancing on the ballroom floor, their movements becoming increasingly jerky and their expressions vacant, signifying their failure and the Toymaker's complete dominion over them. In his office, the Toymaker, observing their defeat, expresses disdain for his "too human, too kind" pawns, including the clowns, nursery characters, and playing cards, which he dismisses and throws into a chest. He declares his need for a "more deadly character" for the next game, selecting the seemingly innocent Cyril, a "fat, jolly school boy," to be his next instrument of torment, further escalating the danger for Steven and Dodo. Back in the cupboard, Dodo spots a note attached to the wall, which Steven identifies as the next riddle: "Lady Luck will show the way, win the game or here you'll stay." As they read the riddle, the cupboard wall dramatically falls away, revealing yet another passageway. Despite the daunting nature of the new challenge, Steven and Dodo, though weary, prepare to face the unknown game ahead, their immediate escape from the cupboard secured, but their ultimate freedom still distant and perilous.
