The Savages Episode 3

When the TARDIS crew lands on a seemingly utopian planet where the population is divided into 'Savages' and 'Elders,' Steven and Dodo must rescue the Doctor from a mind-altering energy extraction process before the Elders can exploit his life force.

The TARDIS arrives on a planet where a technologically advanced society, led by Jano, exploits the native population, known as the Savages, for their life energy. The Doctor is quickly captured and subjected to a process that drains his vitality, transferring it to the Elders. Steven and Dodo, along with a Savage named Chal, seek to rescue the Doctor and end the Elders' tyranny.

While Senta oversees the energy transfer, Jano prepares for an unprecedented in-transference, planning to absorb the Doctor's life force directly. Meanwhile, Steven and Dodo find themselves hunted by guards led by Captain Edal and Exorse. They are aided by the Savages, who hide them in their cave dwellings. However, their presence puts the Savages at risk, leading to a confrontation when Exorse discovers their hiding place.

Steven and Dodo manage to capture Exorse using his own light gun, which reflects light back at the source to freeze the target. They discover a secret entrance to the city, guided by Chal, hoping to rescue the Doctor soon. Inside the city, they are unaware that their movements are being monitored by Edal and Senta. Steven and Dodo move cautiously, while the Elders prepare a trap, intending to isolate and subdue the intruders.

Edal lures the Doctor, now a mindless shell, to a corridor, where Steven and Dodo encounter him. As they attempt to lead him to safety, a door seals off their escape. Trapped, they discover that the Elders intend to use destructive vapors against light guns. Their location has been pinpointed. Inside the city, Jano, having undergone the in-transference, has changed, and he realizes his actions must change. He plans on destroying the equipment, but then he becomes confused suddenly. Steven and Dodo, knowing they must help the Doctor get away, get closer to what they perceive as their end goal, which is thwarted. They soon have to face what is in store for them.

Act 1

The narrative opens with Senta overseeing the energy transfer from the Doctor, noting his vitality drop but assuring Jano of his recovery for future use. Jano, however, reveals a more ambitious plan: an unprecedented "in-transference" to absorb the Doctor's life force directly, also ordering the capture of Steven and Dodo. Simultaneously, Steven and Dodo are led by Chal to the Savages' cave dwellings, a hidden refuge. Here, they confront the grim reality of the Elders' exploitation, learning that the Doctor, once drained, becomes a "hollow shell." Steven, frustrated by the Savages' passivity, urges them to fight, but they fear the light guns. The arrival of Exorse, a city guard, forces the issue. Despite the Savages' initial reluctance to allow the strangers into their sacred caves, Chal, as leader, insists. Exorse corners Steven, Dodo, and Chal in a dead-end tunnel within the caves. Steven, demonstrating quick thinking and resourcefulness, uses Dodo's mirror to reflect Exorse's light gun beam back at him, freezing the guard. This pivotal moment marks Steven's first direct victory against the Elders' technology and personnel, providing them with a captured light gun and a prisoner. The Savages, particularly Tor, are stunned by this display of defiance, some seeing Steven as a "god," while others remain wary of the repercussions. This act establishes the immediate stakes, the oppressive nature of the Elders, and the protagonists' ingenuity in the face of overwhelming odds, setting the stage for their direct confrontation with the city.

Act 2

With Exorse captured and a light gun secured, Steven and Dodo prepare to infiltrate the city to rescue the Doctor, guided by Chal. Simultaneously, Jano proceeds with the in-transference. Senta assists, but expresses concern over the unusual, solitary nature of the procedure. Post-transference, Jano emerges disoriented, showing flashes of the Doctor's personality, questioning his identity, and expressing disgust for the Elders' machinery. He attempts to destroy the equipment but then succumbs to confusion, indicating a profound and unexpected internal transformation. Meanwhile, Steven, Dodo, and Chal locate a secret entrance to the city, the very path the Savages use after their energy is drained. Steven uses the captured light gun to incapacitate a patrolling guard, allowing him and Dodo to enter the city complex. Unbeknownst to them, Captain Edal and Senta monitor their progress from the control room, observing their every move and planning a decisive trap. Edal lures the Doctor, now a silent, unresponsive figure, to a specific corridor. Steven and Dodo encounter the Doctor there, attempting to lead him to safety. However, their escape is abruptly cut off as a door seals shut, trapping them with the Doctor. Edal then issues orders for guards to use "destructive vapours" as a countermeasure against the light guns, revealing the full extent of the Elders' prepared ambush and placing the protagonists in immediate, grave danger.
