The Savages Episode 2

When Dodo vanishes inside a futuristic city, the Doctor and Steven uncover a horrifying secret—the city's advanced society thrives by draining the life force of primitive "savages," and the Doctor is now their next target.

Dodo, Steven, and the Doctor arrive in a seemingly utopian city and soon find that not all is as it seems. Their visit begins innocently enough, but when Dodo inadvertently stumbles into a laboratory, she discovers a horrifying truth: the city's advanced technology and sophisticated society are powered by draining the life force of a group of indigenous people, the "savages."

Dodo's curiosity leads her to venture off on her own, resulting in her capture. While exploring, she overhears strange sounds and comes across a laboratory where she witnesses technicians preparing to transfer life energy from a captive. Steven and Avon search for the missing Dodo, eventually discovering a hidden passage that she might have used.

Meanwhile, the Doctor engages in a discussion with Jano and the Elders, who are the leaders of the city. Steven interrupts the discussion, seeking the Doctor's help in finding Dodo. The Doctor seems unconcerned by Dodo's disappearance, much to Steven's frustration. However, he grows suspicious of the Elders as Dodo recounts her experience in the laboratory. It becomes clear that they’re involved in something sinister.

Dodo narrowly escapes transference and laboratory personnel who plan to experiment on her. She encounters savage, Wylda, who is weak from energy extraction. She is rescued by Steven, but not before seeing the machinery used to drain the savages' vitality.

The Doctor's suspicions are confirmed when he encounters a weakened savage outside the city. He realizes the city's inhabitants are extracting life energy from these individuals to sustain their own vitality and intellectual prowess. He expresses his outrage to Jano about the exploitation of the savages. His moral stance makes him a target, he is captured and imprisoned.

Steven and Dodo, with the assistance of some of the savages, set out to rescue the Doctor. They encounter Tor, a defiant savage who wants to defend his people. Now, they must decide whether to resist or evade Jano’s power.

Act 1

Dodo's journey into the city's hidden horrors begins when she encounters a severely weakened savage struggling through a corridor, utterly drained and barely aware of her presence. His collapse outside the city prompts Dodo to offer assistance, only for her to be startled by two more savages emerging from the bushes, one of whom, Chal, raises a spear in aggression before being stopped. Retreating, Dodo's attention is drawn by faint machinery sounds, leading her to Senta's laboratory. There, she witnesses a horrifying scene: Nanina, strapped to a trolley within a glass case, cries out as technicians prepare to extract her life energy using an inverted funnel device and bubbling vats of black liquid. Dodo's cautious observation leads to her discovery and capture by the technicians, who immediately consider her for transference due to her 'outsider' status. Simultaneously, Steven frantically searches for Dodo in the city, expressing deep concern, while the Doctor, engaged in a discussion with Jano and the Elders, appears unconcerned by Dodo's disappearance, dismissing it as trivial and frustrating Steven. Dodo narrowly escapes the transference process with Edal's intervention, providing only vague, unsettling details about her experience in the 'hospital,' which the city dwellers readily dismiss as a ridiculous story or mere imagination. This act meticulously establishes the city's dark secret and the immediate danger Dodo faces, while also highlighting the Doctor's initial unawareness and the growing tension between him and Steven regarding Dodo's safety. The casual dismissal of Dodo's alarming account by the city's inhabitants underscores their complicity and the depth of the deception.

Act 2

Following Dodo's unsettling experience, the Doctor, Steven, and Dodo leave the city, with Captain Edal discreetly shadowing them. The Doctor, having sensed underlying issues during his discussions, reveals his growing suspicions about the city's inhabitants to his companions, hinting that 'things aren't altogether right here.' Their journey is abruptly halted when Steven discovers a collapsed, severely weakened savage lying in the bushes—the very same man Dodo had encountered and attempted to help earlier. The Doctor immediately recognizes the man's condition, confirming his deepest fears. He meticulously examines the savage, deducing the city's horrifying secret: its advanced, seemingly utopian civilization thrives by systematically extracting the life force from these 'savages,' absorbing it into themselves to sustain their vitality and intellectual prowess, leaving the victims near death. The Doctor's profound moral outrage erupts as Edal approaches, attempting to dismiss the savage as 'shamming' and ordering him back to the reserve. The Doctor vehemently protects the dying man, condemning Edal's inhumanity and the city's practices as a 'protracted murder.' His defiant protection of the savage and his explicit condemnation of Edal's actions escalate the conflict dramatically. This act culminates in the Doctor's capture by Edal, who uses a light gun to force his compliance, marking a significant turning point in the narrative as the primary protagonist becomes imprisoned for his unwavering moral stance against the city's exploitation. The Doctor's capture shifts the immediate threat from Dodo to himself, raising the stakes considerably.

Act 3

With the Doctor forcibly taken, Steven and Dodo return to the spot where they last saw him, only to find him gone. Steven, initially optimistic about the Doctor's ability to handle himself, instructs Dodo to administer the D403 capsules to the weakened savage, who begins to show signs of recovery, confirming the Doctor's initial assessment and the efficacy of the medicine. Their efforts are interrupted by the appearance of a group of armed savages, led by Tor and Chal, who initially approach Steven and Dodo with hostility, mistaking them for city dwellers. Wylda, the savage Dodo had helped earlier, intervenes, identifying Steven and Dodo as friends and revealing the Doctor's capture by the city guards. Simultaneously, back in the Council Chamber, the Doctor confronts Jano and the Elders with unwavering moral conviction. He vehemently condemns their 'great artistic and scientific civilisation,' denouncing their 'progress' as 'protracted murder' and comparing their exploitation of the savages to the menace posed by the Daleks. Jano, unmoved by the Doctor's impassioned plea, dismisses the savages as 'hardly people' and orders the Doctor's imprisonment, sending 'special instructions' to Senta, clearly implying the Doctor will be subjected to the same life-draining process. Outside the city, Steven and Dodo learn the Doctor's impending fate from Chal, who explains he will be taken to the 'great vats' and 'become like us.' Despite Chal's warnings about the city's strength and light guns, Steven and Dodo solidify their resolve to rescue the Doctor, refusing to let him suffer the same fate as the savages.
