The Power of the Daleks Part 3

The Doctor, Ben, and Polly arrive on the planet Vulcan to find a colony obsessed with reactivating dormant Daleks, and must convince the skeptical humans of the deadly danger they pose before it's too late.

The Doctor, along with his companions Ben and Polly, arrives on the colony planet Vulcan where they quickly discover a dangerous situation unfolding. The colony's leaders, Governor Hensell and his ambitious deputy Bragen, are grappling with internal power struggles and a looming rebellion, while chief scientist Lesterson is obsessed with reactivating seemingly dormant Daleks discovered in a crashed space capsule. The Doctor recognizes the Daleks as a grave threat and tries to warn the colonists, but Lesterson, blinded by the potential of using the Daleks for labor and increased production, dismisses his warnings.

Despite The Doctor's attempts to sabotage Lesterson's efforts and prove the Daleks' inherent danger, he finds himself thwarted by the colony's bureaucracy and the machinations of Bragen, who sees the Daleks as a means to undermine Hensell's authority. As the Daleks begin to regain their power and manipulate Lesterson into providing them with resources, the Doctor races against time to expose the truth and prevent the colony's destruction. Meanwhile, the companions become entangled in the colony's internal conflicts, with Polly being kidnapped by rebels and Ben assisting the Doctor.

As the Daleks gain control of the colony's systems and begin to multiply, The Doctor finds evidence that Bragen murdered the official Examiner to advance his position. He is soon confronted by Bragen, who now knows the Doctor's true identity. Learning of Polly's disappearance, Ben is anxious to rescue her and report it to the authorities. Bragen warns that they will be left alone so long as Lesterson and the Daleks continue to be left alone. The episode culminates with the Daleks' plan to build an army and conquer the colony coming to fruition. Despite the Doctor's best efforts, the colonists remain largely ignorant of the impending doom, setting the stage for a desperate battle for survival.

Act 1

The episode commences with Governor Hensell, swayed by chief scientist Lesterson's optimistic projections, granting full permission for the continued experimentation and utilization of the seemingly docile Daleks. The Doctor, recognizing the profound danger, vehemently warns against this course of action, even attempting to demonstrate the Daleks' inherent treachery by ordering one to immobilize itself. Though the Dalek briefly complies, it swiftly rationalizes its disobedience to Lesterson once the Doctor departs, revealing a sophisticated, manipulative intelligence beneath its subservient facade. Concurrently, the colony's internal political landscape shifts dramatically as the ambitious Deputy Governor Bragen orchestrates a calculated scheme to frame Quinn, the previous Examiner, for attacking the real Examiner and sabotaging vital communications. This successful machination leads to Quinn's swift removal and Bragen's elevation to Deputy Governor, significantly enhancing his power base. Undeterred by the official dismissal of his warnings, the Doctor, convinced the Daleks are exploiting Lesterson, begins constructing a device to counteract their influence. He later gains access to Lesterson's laboratory under the pretense of a truce, deploying his device to temporarily incapacitate a Dalek. However, Lesterson, consumed by his scientific ambition and blind faith in the Daleks' utility, violently destroys the Doctor's device and expels him, leaving the Daleks' true nature unexposed and the colony vulnerable. This act meticulously establishes the Daleks' deceptive intelligence, the human leadership's fatal hubris, and Bragen's ruthless ambition, meticulously setting the stage for a rapidly escalating and multi-faceted crisis.

Act 2

The second act plunges the colony deeper into peril as Bragen's conspiracy and the Daleks' true intentions accelerate. Bragen and Janley solidify their plot, with Janley delivering a lethal weapon to rebel leader Valmar, intending to incite chaos to overthrow Hensell, only for Bragen to then crush the rebels and seize power. Janley further aids Bragen by deliberately misdirecting Polly to the communications room, where she is kidnapped by Valmar and tranquilized, becoming a pawn in the escalating conflict. Simultaneously, the Dalek in Lesterson's lab cunningly manipulates the scientist into providing materials and power to build a "100% accurate computer," a thinly veiled ruse for its own self-replication and armament. The Doctor and Ben, returning to the lab, discover two armed Daleks emerging from the capsule, confirming the Daleks' self-reactivation and their hostile, conquering agenda. Despite the Doctor's urgent and now undeniable warnings, Governor Hensell, weary of the arguments, grants Lesterson "carte blanche" with the Daleks and places Bragen in direct charge of the colony, effectively handing control to those who are either dangerously naive or actively complicit. The act culminates with Bragen confronting the Doctor, revealing he knows the Doctor is not the real Examiner and implying the Doctor murdered the true one. The Doctor, in turn, deduces Bragen is the actual murderer. Bragen then uses Polly's kidnapping as leverage, delivering an anonymous note that states Polly will remain safe only if the Doctor and Ben leave the Daleks alone, leaving the Doctor in an impossible dilemma and the colony teetering on the brink of destruction.
