The Power of the Daleks Part 4

The Doctor, Ben, and Polly arrive on a colony planet where the Doctor is mistaken for an Examiner just as the colonists revive dormant Daleks, who quickly begin to multiply and manipulate the humans, threatening deadly consequences for everyone.

On the colony planet Vulcan, populated by Earth colonists, the newly arrived Doctor, Ben, and Polly find themselves amidst burgeoning chaos. The Doctor is immediately mistaken for an Examiner, an official investigator, a role he inadvertently assumes. The colony, under the leadership of Governor Hensell and his deputy Bragen, is also grappling with the reawakening of Daleks, discovered in a crashed capsule by scientist Lesterson. Lesterson believes he can control the Daleks and use them for the colony's benefit but is oblivious to the true danger.

The Daleks, initially appearing subservient, are in fact cunningly manipulating the humans. Lesterson grants them privileges and resources, enabling them to reproduce. Janley, an ambitious technician, is complicit in the Daleks' schemes, blinded by the promise of scientific advancement. Bragen, meanwhile, is revealed to be the secret leader of a rebel faction, seeking to overthrow Hensell and seize control. He attempts to use the Daleks for this purpose, unaware of their true agenda. The Doctor quickly realizes the extent of the Dalek threat. He tries to warn the colonists, but his warnings fall on deaf ears, dismissed as the ramblings of an impostor, particularly after Bragen exposes the real Examiner's corpse to discredit him.

As the Daleks gain power, tensions escalate. Ben and the Doctor try to locate Polly, kidnapped by the rebels. They discover a coded message revealing a rebel meeting, which they infiltrate. The rebels, led by Bragen and aided by Janley, plan to use the Daleks as weapons, unaware that they cannot truly control them. During this, Ben is captured by the rebels. The Doctor, continuing alone, is eventually apprehended by Bragen, who seeks to maintain his facade of control. Meanwhile, Lesterson begins to recognize the true nature of the Daleks, realizing the Examiner was correct all along; they are inherently evil and cannot be controlled. He witnesses them conspiring, confirming his fears that they are not merely machines.

The Doctor finds himself imprisoned alongside Quinn, the real Examiner's associate. Bragen intends to use the Doctor's false identity to solidify his position, but the Doctor manages to use a sonic device to signal for help. As the episode concludes, the Daleks' power grows, and the colonists remain largely ignorant of the impending doom, while Lesterson privately grapples with the horrifying implications of his actions. The seeds of rebellion, conspiracy, and Dalek domination are firmly planted, promising further conflict and peril for the Doctor and the people of Vulcan.

Act 1

This act establishes the initial, misguided human attempts to control the Daleks while simultaneously revealing the Daleks' subtle manipulative capabilities and the burgeoning human political power struggles. Lesterson, believing he holds dominion, cuts the Daleks' power, forcing their feigned subservience and securing his perceived control. Meanwhile, Bragen solidifies his position as Deputy Governor, asserting authority over subordinates and dismissing Valmar. The Doctor and Ben interrupt Bragen's office, seeking information about Polly's disappearance, where the Doctor observes a Dalek serving Bragen and begins to notice inconsistencies in Dalek numbers and movement capabilities. Lesterson, grappling with the Daleks' escalating material demands, starts to doubt their benign nature, expressing fears that the Examiner's warnings about their inherent evil might be true. Janley, complicit in the Daleks' schemes and Bragen's rebellion, blackmails Lesterson with the death of Resno to maintain his cooperation. The Doctor and Ben directly confront Lesterson and Janley, pressing for answers about Polly and the Daleks. The Doctor deduces the shocking truth of Dalek reproduction, a revelation Janley dismisses as impossible, reinforcing her blind faith in the machines. Janley then sedates Lesterson to prevent him from interfering, allowing the Daleks to continue their expansion, showcasing the immediate danger posed by both human ambition and Dalek cunning.

Act 2

The Doctor deciphers a coded message on a notice board, revealing the time and location of a rebel meeting, which he and Ben decide to infiltrate. Hidden among boxes, they observe the rebels, led by Bragen, gathering. Janley and Valmar demonstrate a Dalek rearmed with a control device, showcasing its destructive power by obliterating a tungsten steel screen. Kebble, a skeptical rebel, challenges the Dalek's control, demanding proof that it can be stopped from harming people. Janley, to prove the control, volunteers to stand before the Dalek as Valmar activates the weapon, which appears to cause no harm, seemingly validating their claims. Ben, attempting to create a diversion to locate Polly, accidentally knocks over a box. This alerts the rebels, leading to Ben's capture and subsequent incapacitation by Kebble. Bragen then emerges from the shadows, revealing himself as the true leader of the rebels. He confronts the Doctor, asserting his control over the Dalek, which hesitates but ultimately obeys his command. Bragen orders the Doctor's arrest, intending to expose him as an impostor by producing the real Examiner's body from the mercury swamp, a crime Bragen himself committed. The Doctor is then escorted away by guards, leaving Bragen and Janley to consolidate their power, believing they have eliminated the only remaining threats to their plan.

Act 3

The Doctor is imprisoned in a cell adjacent to Quinn, the real Examiner's associate. During their exchange, Quinn reveals his long-standing knowledge of Bragen's rebel leadership, while the Doctor exposes Bragen as the murderer of the real Examiner. The Doctor, revealing his true identity as a traveler, attempts to use a sonic device to open the cell door, but it instead emits a high-pitched whistle, causing a dog to bark outside, indicating a signal rather than an escape. Simultaneously, Lesterson awakens in his laboratory, disturbed by his earlier sedation. He observes two Daleks conspiring and then two more emerging from the capsule, confirming his worst fears. He realizes the Daleks are not only reproducing but also acting independently and maliciously, confirming the Examiner's earlier warnings about their inherent evil. Lesterson's dawning horror underscores the catastrophic implications of his initial experiments. The act concludes with the Doctor and Quinn trapped, their immediate escape thwarted, while Lesterson grapples with the horrifying, undeniable truth of the Daleks' uncontrolled multiplication and malevolent intelligence, setting the stage for an escalating crisis that threatens the entire colony.
