The Web of Fear Part 1

When the TARDIS lands in a web-covered London Underground, the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria must unravel a mystery involving forgotten Yeti, a military operation, and a city gripped by fear to stop a hidden menace from taking control.

The episode opens with the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria struggling to control the TARDIS after the expulsion of the Doctor's double, Salamander. They land in what appears to be space, but quickly realize they are covered in cobwebs and held in place by an unknown force.

Meanwhile, Professor Travers, who previously encountered the Yeti in Tibet, is in London trying to warn authorities about the danger they pose, particularly as he has reactivated a Yeti control sphere. His daughter, Anne, arrives from America after receiving a cable from her father, expressing his troubles. Travers is embroiled in a conflict with Julius Silverstein, a museum owner who possesses a Yeti that Travers wants back, because of the missing control sphere. Silverstein refuses to return it. Soon after, a Yeti attacks and presumably kills Silverstein in his museum.

The TARDIS crew manages to break free from the cobwebs and lands in the London Underground. They discover that the station is deserted and covered in cobwebs, and that a strange menace seems to have overtaken the city. They encounter a dead man covered in cobwebs and a newspaper proclaiming "Londoners flee! Menace spreads". The Doctor deduces that the electricity is off, enabling them to traverse the tunnels, but they soon encounter soldiers laying cable.

The soldiers capture Jamie and Victoria, while the Doctor follows the cable to Charing Cross station, where he finds crates of explosives being guarded by Yeti. Back at the military base operating from Goodge Street underground station, Captain Knight is overseeing a plan to blow up the tunnels, while Anne is assisting with the technical aspects. Chorley, a journalist, attempts to uncover information, but is largely stonewalled. Jamie and Victoria are interrogated but deny anyone was traveling with them.

As the episode concludes, the Doctor hides from the Yeti, and Anne is concerned about blowing up the tunnels if others are down there. The military is given clearance and prepares to detonate the explosives, while Jamie and Victoria realize the tunnels are about to be destroyed, realizing the Doctor is in the tunnel.

Act 1

The episode commences with the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria in a perilous situation aboard the TARDIS, reeling from the recent expulsion of the Doctor's malevolent double, Salamander. They cling precariously to the console as Jamie heroically manages to close the open doors, narrowly averting a catastrophic loss into the time vortex. Despite the immediate danger passing, the TARDIS remains unpredictable, prompting the Doctor's renewed attempts to control its trajectory, a feat Jamie views with skepticism. The scene then abruptly shifts to a London museum, introducing Professor Travers, who vehemently argues with the museum owner, Julius Silverstein. Travers desperately seeks the return of a Yeti exhibit, revealing he has reactivated its control unit but has misplaced the critical control sphere. Silverstein, motivated by profit and possessiveness, scoffs at Travers's warnings regarding the Yeti's inherent danger, dismissing him as a madman. Following this tense confrontation, a mysterious silver sphere materializes, and the Yeti, now seemingly active, attacks Silverstein, leaving his fate ambiguous. The narrative returns to the TARDIS, now inexplicably trapped and covered in dense cobwebs, suspended in an unknown void. The Doctor, ever resourceful, engineers a solution to break free, and with a violent lurch, the TARDIS lands, having temporarily evaded its unseen captor. This initial act effectively establishes the immediate instability surrounding the TARDIS crew and introduces the re-emergence of a significant, technologically-controlled threat in a seemingly ordinary setting.

Act 2

The TARDIS crew emerges into a deserted, cobweb-choked Covent Garden Underground station, a chilling sight that immediately signals widespread abandonment. They discover a dead man similarly covered in cobwebs, clutching a newspaper headline proclaiming 'Londoners flee! Menace spreads,' confirming a pervasive and terrifying threat has gripped the city. The Doctor, assessing the environment, determines the electricity in the tracks is off, allowing them safe passage through the tunnels. As they navigate the subterranean labyrinth, they encounter a squad of soldiers laying power cables, a clear indication of a military presence and an organized response to the unknown menace. The Doctor, cautious, decides to split the group: Jamie and Victoria follow the soldiers, while he tracks the mysterious cable. This strategic division quickly leads to trouble when Jamie and Victoria are ambushed and captured by the soldiers in a maintenance alcove. Simultaneously, the Doctor's solo investigation leads him to Charing Cross station, where he discovers crates of explosives being guarded by the very Yeti that Professor Travers warned about, forcing him into hiding. This act escalates the peril, moving the TARDIS crew from observation to direct entanglement with both the monstrous threat and the human military response, leaving the protagonists separated and vulnerable.

Act 3

The narrative shifts focus to the military's command center, the Goodge Street Ops Room, where Captain Knight oversees an urgent operation. Anne Travers, the Professor's daughter, works on technical equipment, while the persistent journalist Chorley attempts to extract information, largely without success. Professor Travers himself arrives, dismissive of the military's capabilities and reiterating his grave warnings about the menace. Knight, determined to proceed with his demolition plan, dismisses Chorley and focuses on the mission. Meanwhile, at Charing Cross, Yetis are seen actively covering the explosives with cobwebs, underscoring their direct involvement in the unfolding crisis. Back at Goodge Street, Sergeant Arnold brings in the captured Jamie and Victoria. Anne, displaying a humanitarian concern, questions Arnold about the presence of any other individuals in the tunnels before the planned explosion. Knight, however, prioritizes the demolition, instructing Arnold to ensure the tunnels are clear and to proceed without delay. The episode culminates with Arnold informing Jamie and Victoria of the imminent tunnel demolition, a revelation that causes Victoria to immediately realize the Doctor remains trapped within the blast zone, creating a desperate cliffhanger.
