Fury From The Deep Part 4

When an insidious, sentient seaweed threatens to engulf a North Sea gas refinery, the Doctor and his companions must uncover the weed's nerve center and sever its control before it can saturate the British Isles and plunge the world into chaos.

Episode Four opens with a dire situation unfolding at a North Sea gas refinery, as multiple rigs fall silent and communication lines go dead. Control Hall is abuzz with panic as Price frantically attempts to contact Rig D and Rig A, only to be met with silence. Van Lutyens, the technical advisor, emphasizes the need to wait for Harris, the man in charge, to authorize action, much to the Doctor's frustration. Meanwhile, in the Impeller Room, a growing sense of dread permeates as a disturbing heartbeat sound intensifies. Victoria expresses her escalating fear to Jamie in the Bunk Room, questioning their constant encounters with danger and longing for peace. The Doctor enters, acknowledging the uncertainty of the situation and the need to wait, further fueling Victoria's anxiety.

On the beach, Harris frantically searches for his wife and encounters Robson, who cryptically tells him he'll find her soon while acting peculiar. Back in the Impeller Room, Van Lutyens decides to take matters into his own hands, against the Doctor's advice, and descends into the impeller shaft to investigate the blockage. Tragedy strikes as the pipeline fills with foam and seaweed, engulfing Van Lutyens. The Doctor and Jamie resolve to venture into the shaft to rescue him, despite Victoria's pleas. In the Refinery Corridor, Jones and Perkins discuss the unfolding crisis, with Jones downplaying Harris's concerns and attributing the situation to an internal squabble.

Inside the impeller shaft, the Doctor and Jamie discover Van Lutyens' discarded torch, confirming his demise and prompting a hasty retreat as the weed closes in. They narrowly escape by climbing the maintenance ladder. They emerge to find the Impeller Room deserted and Victoria missing. Meanwhile, Harris confronts Jones in the Control Hall, revealing the horrifying truth about the seaweed creatures and their influence. Jones remains skeptical, attributing Harris's claims to the stress of his wife's accident. Despite her resistance, Harris persists, seeking permission to evacuate and destroy the rigs.

The situation escalates further as Robson appears, seemingly controlled by the weed. He vehemently objects to the destruction of the rigs, claiming the rigs are his life. The Doctor then arrives, corroborating Harris's claims and revealing that Robson is under the influence of the weed. Harris advocates for the Doctor. Seeking Victoria, Jamie finds her unconscious in the Pipeline Room after she gets locked in by Oak and Quill. Victoria tells Jamie that the two engineers locked her in. As they reconnect, they are interrupted by the resurgence of the ominous sound and the sight of foam filling the transparent panel in the pipe. The Doctor warns Jones and the others in the Control Hall that the weed is trying to form a vast colony to saturate the British Islands. Jamie and Victoria return to the Control Hall to tell the Doctor and the others that the weed is coming up the pipeline again, further emphasizing the immediate threat and setting the stage for a desperate fight for survival.

Act 1

The episode opens with escalating tension in the Control Hall as multiple North Sea gas rigs fall silent, leaving Price and Van Lutyens in a state of growing alarm, hampered by the absence of Harris, the man in charge. Simultaneously, a disturbing, rhythmic heartbeat sound permeates the Impeller Room, unsettling the crew. In the Bunk Room, Victoria expresses profound fear and exhaustion to Jamie, questioning their constant exposure to danger and longing for a peaceful existence. The Doctor, entering, acknowledges the dire uncertainty, but emphasizes the need to wait for Harris, further exacerbating Victoria's anxiety. On the beach, Harris frantically searches for his wife, encountering Robson, who behaves cryptically, hinting at Harris finding his wife 'very soon.' The narrative then shifts to Van Lutyens, who, against the Doctor's explicit warnings and the Chief's reservations, decides to take matters into his own hands. Driven by a sense of duty to investigate the blockage in the impeller shaft, he descends into the perilous depths. The act culminates in tragedy as the pipeline rapidly fills with foam and sentient seaweed, engulfing Van Lutyens, his cries abruptly silenced as he is pulled into the pipe. This critical event serves as the inciting incident, forcing the Doctor and Jamie to abandon their waiting posture and resolve to venture into the dangerous shaft to rescue him, despite Victoria's desperate pleas.

Act 2

Following Van Lutyens' disappearance, the Doctor and Jamie, equipped with gas masks, bravely descend into the gloomy impeller shaft. They quickly discover Van Lutyens' discarded torch, a grim confirmation of his demise, and realize the immediate danger as the bubbling sound intensifies and the weed closes in. They narrowly escape the encroaching foam and weed creatures by scrambling up a maintenance ladder, emerging breathless into a deserted Impeller Room, where they discover Victoria is missing. Meanwhile, Harris confronts the skeptical Miss Megan Jones in the Control Hall, desperately trying to convey the horrifying truth about the sentient seaweed creatures and their telepathic influence. Jones, dismissing his claims as stress-induced delusions following his wife's accident, remains unconvinced. Despite her resistance, Harris persists, advocating for the evacuation and destruction of the compromised rigs. The situation dramatically escalates with the appearance of Robson, now visibly controlled by the weed, who vehemently objects to the destruction of the rigs, claiming them as 'his life.' The Doctor then arrives, corroborating Harris's seemingly outlandish claims and confirming Robson's possession. Harris, finding an unexpected ally, advocates for the Doctor's credibility. While this unfolds, Jamie frantically searches for Victoria, eventually finding her unconscious and locked in the Pipeline Room, having been trapped by Oak and Quill. After she regains consciousness, they witness the ominous foam filling a transparent pipe panel, signaling the weed's renewed ascent.

Act 3

With the immediate threat of the weed's advance confirmed, the Doctor, now in the Control Hall, delivers a chilling revelation to Jones and the others. He explains that the loss of the Control rig and the aggressive spread of the weed indicate a larger, more sinister objective: the formation of a vast, interconnected colony designed to saturate the British Isles, and potentially the entire planet. Jones and Perkins react with disbelief, questioning the possibility of such a phenomenon from mere seaweed, but the Doctor insists it is a struggle for power, matter over mind, emphasizing the parasitic nature of the weed's intelligence, derived from human brains. As the conversation continues, the last remaining contact with Rig BAXTER is lost in a desperate, terror-filled transmission, further solidifying the Doctor's warnings. Just as the gravity of the situation begins to sink in, Jamie and Victoria burst into the Control Hall, their urgency palpable. They report that the weed is not only present but actively coming up the pipeline again, confirming the immediate and direct threat to the refinery itself. The episode concludes with this stark realization, leaving the characters and the audience facing an imminent, overwhelming attack, poised for a desperate fight for survival against a rapidly advancing, intelligent, and parasitic entity.
