Fury From The Deep Part 5

When a sentient seaweed colony seizes control of North Sea oil rigs and their personnel, a time-traveling Doctor must race against time to locate and destroy the colony's nerve center, facing the risk of global contamination if he fails.

On the coast, the Doctor, Jamie, and Victoria arrive at an oil refinery to find that something is amiss. They soon discover that a sentient seaweed is taking control of the oil rigs and personnel, turning them into mindless drones. The Doctor learns the weed was drawn up through one of the drilling rigs, and top priority people are being attacked first, meaning the weed now controls people who know the layout of the whole compound.

The group tries to figure out the weed's next move. The Doctor believes it will attack the gas distribution center. After Victoria gets trapped in an oxygen room, the group realizes pure oxygen is toxic to the weed. They decide to put the oxygen supply room under guard. However, Robson, now under the weed's control, sabotages the oxygen supply room, eliminating all reserves. The Doctor realizes someone else in the compound is also under the weed's control.

Jamie spots Oak and Quill, and after a brief fight, it's revealed they too are controlled by the weed. The pipeline room is then attacked. An engineer is dragged into the expanding foam. The Doctor, Jamie, and others are locked in the impeller room as the gas fills the area. They barely escape, but Victoria goes missing. They discover that Robson has kidnapped Victoria and is trying to escape in a helicopter. The Doctor uses the radio to contact Robson, who declares Victoria his hostage and demands the Doctor come over to them. The Doctor agrees, believing Robson will lead them to the nerve center of the colony.

The Doctor and Jamie pursue Robson in another helicopter. They locate Robson on the control rig complex, which is partially covered in foam that marks the nerve center. They land on the rig, and venture inside. They hear Victoria calling for help. Aware it could be a trap, they proceed cautiously to try and rescue her.

Act 1

The episode opens with the immediate crisis: all North Sea oil rigs are unresponsive, their crews lost to a sentient seaweed colony. The Doctor deduces the weed's nature, explaining it was drawn up through drilling rigs and controls key personnel, specifically those familiar with the compound's layout. This theory is immediately validated by the mention of Robson, a high-priority individual, whom Harris orders to be found and guarded. A critical discovery emerges when Harris recounts Victoria's encounter in the oxygen room; the Doctor realizes pure oxygen is toxic to the weed, identifying a potential weapon. This leads to the decision to guard the oxygen supply. However, the weed's insidious control is further highlighted by the brief, unsettling appearance of Oak and Quill donning gas masks before entering the oxygen room, foreshadowing sabotage. Jones, concerned for Robson, attempts to reach him in his cabin, only to find him in a trance-like state, repeating "Can't help." Her efforts to break through the weed's control fail, reinforcing the deep-seated nature of the threat and the futility of conventional intervention. This act establishes the enemy's methods, the stakes, and the initial, limited understanding of how to combat it, ending with the realization that the weed's influence is pervasive and difficult to counter directly. The Doctor's initial theories are confirmed, but the human element of the threat remains elusive.

Act 2

The narrative escalates as the weed colony launches a direct, aggressive counter-attack, demonstrating its advanced strategic capabilities. Robson, previously believed to be secured, breaks free from his cabin, attacking his guard and sabotaging the entire oxygen supply, eliminating all reserves. This action confirms the Doctor's suspicion that another individual within the compound is under the weed's control, actively working against them. The threat becomes overtly physical when Jamie confronts Oak and Quill, revealing their control by the weed through their toxic breath, though Jamie manages to incapacitate Quill. Simultaneously, the weed directly assaults the pipeline room, rapidly expanding foam that consumes an engineer, highlighting the immediate and lethal danger. The Doctor, Jamie, and others are then trapped in the impeller room as toxic gas fills the space, barely escaping with their lives. Amidst the chaos, Victoria goes missing. Robson is discovered kidnapping Victoria, taking her by helicopter. The Doctor establishes radio contact with Robson, who declares Victoria his hostage and demands the Doctor surrender. Recognizing this as an opportunity, the Doctor agrees, believing Robson will unwittingly lead them to the colony's nerve center. This act marks a significant shift from defensive strategy to a high-stakes, proactive pursuit, driven by the personal threat to Victoria and the Doctor's calculated risk to locate the enemy's core.

Act 3

This act plunges the Doctor and Jamie into a direct pursuit of Robson and the kidnapped Victoria, transitioning the conflict from the refinery to the open sea. Utilizing a company helicopter, the Doctor and Jamie track Robson, guided by Harris from the control hall. The pursuit culminates in the identification of the control rig complex, where a tower covered in white foam unmistakably marks the nerve center of the weed colony. This visual confirmation provides a clear objective and a tangible location for the enemy's core. The Doctor and Jamie execute a daring landing on the foam-covered rig, descending a rope ladder into the heart of the complex. The environment within the rig is eerie and silent, heightening the tension and sense of entering a perilous, unknown territory. As they navigate the metallic corridors, Jamie hears Victoria's desperate call for help. The Doctor, however, immediately recognizes the potential for a trap, urging extreme caution. This moment underscores the Doctor's strategic mind, anticipating the enemy's cunning. The act concludes with the protagonists deep within the rig, on the verge of confronting the nerve center, with Victoria's fate and the success of their mission hanging precariously in the balance. The stage is set for the ultimate confrontation, but also for potential deception.
