The Wheel In Space Part 5

When the Cybermen invade a space station and sabotage its defenses, the Doctor must race against time to uncover their insidious plot to weaponize the station and prevent a devastating invasion of Earth.

On a remote space station called the Wheel, the Doctor and Jamie discover a sinister plot by the Cybermen. The Cybermen, who have infiltrated the Wheel, plan to use the space station as a staging ground for an invasion of Earth. Their initial strategy involves manipulating a meteor shower to force the humans to repair a powerful laser, intending to then seize control of it.

The Doctor quickly realizes that the Cybermen's true objective extends beyond merely destroying the Wheel. He urges the crew to take protective measures. The Cybermen unleash Cybermats, metallic creatures that attack through brainwaves, but the humans manage to thwart the initial attack by using audio frequencies to disable them. The Cybermen, communicating with their Cyber-Planner, adapt their plans. The Cybermen repair the laser, but also plan to use it to destroy the Bernalium stores of the space station.

As the situation becomes dire, the Doctor discovers that the Cybermen plan to take over the Wheel completely. He realizes the critical importance of recovering a Time Vector Generator from their ship after it goes missing. Jamie volunteers to retrieve it, accompanied by Zoe, a brilliant young woman who calculates the risks of the journey. While they are gone, the Cybermen move to enact the next phase of their plan. Vallance, who has been controlled by the Cybermen, is ordered to add capsules to the air supply, which will convert the air into pure ozone, killing all humans on the wheel.

As meteorites approach the Wheel, Ryan and Casai attempt to use the laser to destroy them. The Doctor learns of the Cybermen's plot to poison the air supply, and alerts Gemma Corwyn. Corwyn attempts to thwart the Cybermen, but is killed. As the Cybermen continue to enact their plan, the Doctor faces a desperate race against time to stop them and find a way to save the Wheel from destruction.

Act 1

The act opens with the Doctor and Jamie observing a Cyberman, prompting the Doctor to deduce that the aliens' true objective extends beyond merely destroying the Wheel. He swiftly acts to protect the crew, instructing them to seal all airlocks, anticipating a direct attack on their life support. This proactive measure proves prescient when Cybermats, metallic creatures designed to attack via brainwaves, infiltrate the station. The Doctor, demonstrating his unique understanding of Cybermen technology, guides the crew in deploying a variable audio-frequency, successfully neutralizing the Cybermats. This unexpected human resistance forces the Cyber-Planner to acknowledge a 'human with knowledge beyond our predictions' and adapt its strategy. Meanwhile, a hypnotized Flannigan reports the X-ray laser, a critical defense mechanism, is repaired and operational. This development, initially perceived as a victory, is immediately overshadowed by the Doctor's profound realization: the Cybermen deliberately orchestrated the meteorite shower to *force* the humans to repair the laser, not to destroy the Wheel, but to seize it for their own ends. He concludes their ultimate ambition is a full-scale invasion of Earth, with the Wheel serving as their strategic staging ground. This revelation dramatically elevates the stakes, shifting the conflict from mere survival to the fate of an entire planet. A critical setback emerges when the Doctor discovers the Time Vector Generator from the TARDIS is missing, a device essential to countering the Cybermen. Jamie, feeling responsible, volunteers to retrieve it from the derelict rocket, accompanied by Zoe, whose logical mind calculates the immense risks of the journey. As Jamie and Zoe embark, the Cybermen, having adapted their plans due to the human's neutron field barrier, initiate 'Plan Three.' This insidious new strategy involves Vallance, a controlled crewman, introducing capsules into the Wheel's air supply to convert oxygen into lethal ozone. Doctor Corwyn, discovering this plot, makes a desperate attempt to warn the Operations Room but is tragically killed by a Cyberman before she can complete her message, leaving the crew vulnerable and unaware of the imminent, invisible threat. The act concludes with the meteorites still barraging the Wheel, the laser proving insufficient, and the Doctor facing a race against time to uncover and counter this deadly new phase of the Cybermen's invasion.
