The Wheel In Space Part 6

When the Cybermen plot to use a space station to invade Earth, the Doctor must convince the crew of the Wheel to risk their lives and destroy the Cybermen's ship before it's too late, while Zoe decides if she will join the Doctor and Jamie.

The episode opens with the Wheel in Space under attack by meteorites controlled by the Cybermen. Jamie and Zoe are sent out to space to try to deflect some of the incoming meteorites. Ryan is focused on destroying the meteroites even as Lernov points out that Zoe and Jamie could get blown out into space. After the main body of meteorites are deflected, the Doctor asks about Jamie and Zoe; they appear to have lost hold of each other. Ryan remains concerned about smaller meteorites incoming. He then makes a callous statement about the two kids likely being dead. The Doctor reminds him that it was a calculated risk, as they are trying to find something on board the rocket that will help them beat the Cybermen. The Doctor reveals that the Cybermen are going to poison the air, stating that Gemma had told him before she died (shown to the audience on the wall monitor.) Meanwhile Casali reports another swarm of meteorites. The Doctor asks about Jarvis, and then Lernov finds Bennett on the monitor, lifting the force field, saying that it is because the Cybermen killed Gemma. As the control room watches in horror, a Cyberman lifts Bennett up over its head and throws him down the corridor, them zaps him.

In the rocket control room, Jamie brings Zoe a drink, they discuss the item that they are looking for which is a gold rod. Back in the oxygen supply room, a Cyberman and Vallance plot to take over the Wheel. The Cyberman instructs Vallance to inject poison into the air supply; however the humans have switched over to an emergency supply protected by a force field. They discuss how someone on the Wheel must know of their plans. In the rocket control room, Jamie finds the rod as Zoe sees the Cybermen on the monitor. Back in the oxygen supply room, the Cyberman tells Vallance to stare into a box and think of each individual on the Wheel. First, they name Tanya Lernov, then Leo Ryan, then Jarvis Bennett. Vallance then says Zoe Heriot. He attempts to name the Doctor, but he doesn't know the Doctor's name.

Back in the Wheel operations room, Ryan wonders what use the Wheel could possibly be to the Cybermen. Lernov notices something on the radar. it is a Cyberman ship. Ryan asks about contacting Earth for assistance, but Rico says that he needs some transistors that are in the Power Room. The Cybermen are aware of the Doctor and want him lured outside the force field. Jamie and Zoe seek to warn him. The Doctor volunteers to go for the spares, where Flannigan will meet him in corridor six. The Doctor instructs Ryan to grab Flannigan and examine the metal plate on his neck, not trusting him. Later, Flannigan is met by a Cyberman who tells him to return to the Operations room and destroy the force field after they let him through. The Doctor retrieves the mercury, circuit board, and coils of wire from the power room. Jamie and Zoe discover Corwyn's body in the landing bay. They then meet up with Flannigan in the corridor, who leads them to the Wheel Operations room. Ryan immediately grabs Flannigan, and places the anti-hypnosis device on the back of Flannigan's neck.

Jamie asks where the Doctor is, and the Doctor then calls to say that he has the spares. Jamie warns him that the Cybermen are going to try to trap him, the call cuts off. Two Cybermen are outside of the Power Room, and the Doctor remarks that he knew someone realised their plans. The Cybermen state that they are ordered to destroy him, and the Doctor asks why they ordered Duggan to destroy radio communication with Earth. He surmises that smaller ships enter Earth's atmosphere by homing on a radio beam. Jamie and Flannigan arrive, and the doctor reveals he has booby-trapped the door. The Doctor tasks Jamie and Flannigan to hold off the Cybermen. Back in the Wheel operations room, the Cybermen's ship comes closer to the Wheel and the Doctor announces that he is trying to give the laser more power. Jamie and Flannigan arrive at the loading bay in space suits, with Vallance being there with the Cybermen. Jamie puts a metal plate on Vallance's helmet, at which point the Cyberman turns around and Flanigan uses the extinguisher. The Cybermen's spaceship is destroyed.

In the rocket control room, Zoe asks Jamie and the Doctor where they are going, referring to the TARDIS. The Doctor offers to take her with them and explains what she may face, showing her a vision of the Daleks.

Act 1

The episode opens with the Wheel in Space under a relentless meteorite assault, orchestrated by the Cybermen. Communications Officer Ryan prioritizes destroying the incoming threats, even at the potential cost of Jamie and Zoe, who are outside deflecting meteorites. The Doctor reveals the Cybermen's true objective: to poison the Wheel's air supply, a fact learned from the deceased Gemma. This revelation escalates the threat from a natural disaster to a deliberate act of war. A second wave of meteorites is deflected, but the crew's relief is short-lived as Station Controller Jarvis Bennett, grief-stricken by Gemma's death, attempts to confront a Cyberman after lifting the force field, only to be brutally killed. Simultaneously, Jamie and Zoe, having survived the meteorite storm, search for a crucial gold rod in the rocket control room. In the Oxygen Supply Room, a Cyberman and Vallance attempt to inject poison, but the humans have switched to an emergency supply. The Cybermen, realizing their plans are known, use Vallance to identify each crew member, seeking the individual who understands their methods. Zoe inadvertently intercepts their communications, learning of their intent to trap the Doctor. The act concludes with the detection of a large Cyberman spaceship approaching the Wheel, necessitating a desperate mission to retrieve radio spares from the Power Room to contact Earth. The Doctor volunteers, but not before subtly instructing Ryan to apprehend Flannigan, whom he suspects of being compromised, marking a shift from reactive defense to proactive counter-strategy.

Act 2

Act Two intensifies the cat-and-mouse game between the Doctor and the Cybermen, focusing on the critical mission to retrieve radio spares and counter the impending invasion. The Cybermen, now aware of the Doctor's presence and his understanding of their tactics, plot to lure him outside the force field and destroy him. Jamie and Zoe, having discovered the Cybermen's intentions, race back to warn the Doctor. The Doctor, having anticipated treachery, instructs Ryan to apprehend Flannigan upon his return, suspecting him of being under Cyberman influence. Indeed, a Cyberman intercepts Flannigan, ordering him to return to the Operations room and disable the force field. While the Doctor skillfully navigates the Power Room, retrieving the necessary components, Jamie and Zoe discover Corwyn's body, underscoring the Cybermen's deadly presence. They then encounter Flannigan, who leads them to the Operations Room, where Ryan immediately places an anti-hypnosis device on his neck, confirming the Doctor's suspicions. Jamie frantically contacts the Doctor, warning him of the trap, but the transmission cuts off. The Doctor, now in the Power Room, confronts two Cybermen, revealing his knowledge of their larger invasion plan: using a radio beam to guide smaller ships into Earth's atmosphere. He booby-traps the door, incapacitating one Cyberman, and tasks Jamie and Flannigan with holding off reinforcements at the Loading Bay while he attempts to boost the laser's power to destroy the approaching Cyberman spaceship. The tension mounts as the Cyberman ship draws closer, and the Doctor races against time to complete his modifications.

Act 3

The final act brings the immediate conflict to a head and sets the stage for future adventures. With the Cyberman ship rapidly approaching the Wheel, the Doctor works furiously to channel extra power into the laser. In the Loading Bay, Jamie and Flannigan, now in space suits, prepare to confront the Cybermen and Vallance. Jamie ingeniously places a metal plate on Vallance's helmet, distracting the Cyberman, allowing Flannigan to use a quick-drying plastic extinguisher on its chest unit, incapacitating it. As more Cybermen spacewalk towards the Wheel, Flannigan manages to shut the outer doors, though one Cyberman wedges itself, attempting to force entry. Despite running out of plastic, Flannigan activates the neutron force-field, repelling the remaining Cybermen and securing the Wheel. In the Operations Room, Ryan, on the Doctor's signal, fires the supercharged laser, utterly destroying the Cyberman spaceship in a decisive victory. With the immediate threat neutralized, Ryan contacts Earth Central, initiating a report on the invasion and confirming the Wheel's operational status. The narrative then shifts to the Rocket Control Room, where Zoe, having witnessed the Doctor and Jamie's extraordinary capabilities, expresses her desire to join them. Inside the TARDIS, the Doctor, after a brief moment of preparation, reveals Zoe's presence, challenging Jamie's assumption that she would simply return home. To solidify her understanding of the dangers involved, the Doctor offers Zoe a vision of the Daleks, a stark preview of the perilous journey she wishes to undertake, concluding the episode with her pivotal decision to embark on a new life of adventure.
