The Dominators Part 5

When the Dominators plot to transform the planet Dulkis into a radioactive fuel source by drilling to its core, the Doctor, along with Jamie and Zoe, must thwart their plans and prevent planetary destruction, even as time runs out.

The Dominators, led by Rago, seek to convert the planet Dulkis into a radioactive fuel source for their war fleet. They plan to drill into the planet's core, using rockets and an atomic seed device to trigger a cataclysmic reaction. The Doctor, along with his companions Jamie and Zoe, arrives to find the local Dulcians oppressed and unaware of the impending danger.

The Dominators' initial efforts are hampered by interference from Jamie and a local named Cully, who manage to disrupt the drilling operations by sabotaging the Dominators' robotic Quarks. This leads to escalating conflicts as the Dominators attempt to conserve power and complete their mission despite the resistance.

The Doctor investigates the Dominators' plans and uncovers the true nature of their intentions: to turn Dulkis into a radioactive fuel store. Realizing the planet's imminent destruction, he rallies the Dulcians, including Teel and Kando, to resist the invaders. The Doctor devises a plan to stop the Dominators by defusing the atomic seed device, but it requires a dangerous and improbable solution.

As the Dominators prepare to deploy the seed device, Jamie proposes a daring plan to tunnel from a bomb shelter to the borehole, intercepting the device as it is lowered. Despite the risks and the challenges of digging through concrete, the Doctor, Zoe, and the Dulcians work tirelessly to complete the tunnel in time. Meanwhile, Jamie and Cully create diversions, using homemade bombs to disable Quarks and delay the Dominators.

With time running out, the Dominators complete the drilling and prepare to initiate the planet's destruction. Rago inserts the seed device down the borehole. Just as all seems lost, Jamie emerges from the tunnel and catches the device. However, the device is sealed and cannot be defused. Facing planetary annihilation, the Doctor formulates a last-minute plan to remove the seed device from the planet.

The Doctor races to the Dominator's saucer and covertly places the seed device inside. The Dominators launch their ship, unaware of the ticking time bomb within. As the saucer leaves Dulkis, the Doctor rejoins Jamie and Zoe. The seed device detonates aboard the ship, destroying the Dominators and averting the planet's destruction, though a localized volcanic eruption occurs on the island. The Doctor, once again, saves the day, ensuring the survival of Dulkis and its inhabitants.

Act 1

Rago, the Dominator Navigator, reprimands Toba for expending Quark power on trivial pursuits, re-emphasizing the critical mission to complete drilling operations, insert rockets into perimeter boreholes, and bring the atomic seed device to critical mass. Rago explicitly states that the Dulcians are deemed unsuitable for slave labor and will perish with their planet, signaling their imminent destruction. Meanwhile, Jamie and Cully, having successfully evaded the Quarks, return to their bomb shelter hideout, where they are soon joined by the Doctor, Teel, and Kando. Observing the Dominators' persistent drilling through the periscope, the Doctor deduces their true, catastrophic intent: to transform Dulkis into a radioactive fuel source by fracturing its crust and detonating an atomic seed device in its molten core, thereby converting the entire planet into a vast, volatile fuel store for their invasion fleet. Faced with the horrifying prospect of planetary annihilation, Jamie spontaneously proposes a daring plan: to dig a tunnel from their bomb shelter directly to the central borehole and intercept the atomic seed device as it is lowered. The Doctor, initially concerned about the feasibility of completing the tunnel in time, recognizes the simple brilliance of Jamie's idea. He then devises makeshift chemical bombs for Jamie and Cully to use as distractions against the Quarks, while he transforms his sonic screwdriver into an oxyacetylene torch to rapidly begin excavating the tunnel through the concrete shelter wall, initiating the desperate race against time to save Dulkis.

Act 2

The desperate tunneling effort progresses within the bomb shelter, with Teel, Kando, Zoe, and the Doctor taking turns to excavate the passage. Above ground, Jamie and Cully embark on their mission to create diversions, utilizing the Doctor's improvised chemical bombs. They successfully destroy several Quarks and disrupt the Dominators' drilling operations, causing temporary setbacks for the invaders. These small victories, however, prove fleeting. Rago, increasingly frustrated by the delays and the dwindling Quark power levels, orders Toba to continue drilling without interruption, vowing to personally eliminate the "primitives" responsible for the sabotage. The Dominators, despite the resistance, press forward with their work, systematically inserting rockets into the perimeter boreholes. During a subsequent attempt to disable more Quarks, Jamie and Cully find themselves trapped. Cully sustains a paralyzing injury from a Quark's blast, forcing Jamie to bring him back to the shelter for the Doctor's immediate attention. The Doctor diagnoses Cully's temporary paralysis, acknowledging the effectiveness of their delaying tactics but recognizing the severe risks involved. Just as the tunnelers believe they are nearing completion, Zoe reports a critical development: the Dominators have successfully finished their drilling operations. This news signals a dire shift in the timeline, indicating that the window for intercepting the seed device is rapidly closing and the protagonists are now in a direct race against the Dominators' final deployment.

Act 3

With the Dominators' drilling complete and the atomic seed device prepared for deployment, the race to intercept it reaches its critical peak. Jamie, pushing through the final feet of the tunnel, breaks through into the borehole just as Rago prepares to insert the device. Zoe, observing through the periscope, watches in horror as Rago drops the device down the hole, believing all hope is lost. However, Jamie, positioned perfectly, catches the device as it descends. The Doctor, upon examining the retrieved device, discovers a devastating setback: it is completely sealed and cannot be defused, rendering their entire tunneling effort seemingly futile and leaving Dulkis still facing certain destruction. In a moment of desperate ingenuity, the Doctor formulates a new, last-minute plan: to remove the seed device from the planet entirely. He swiftly instructs Jamie and Zoe to return to the TARDIS, and Teel, Kando, and the injured Cully to evacuate to the Capital via a capsule, warning them of a minor volcanic eruption. The Doctor then races across the island, covertly placing the ticking atomic seed device inside the Dominator saucer just as its final Quark enters the airlock, sealing the Dominators' fate. Unaware of the deadly cargo, Rago orders the saucer's immediate lift-off. As the ship ascends, the Doctor rejoins his companions. The perimeter rockets fire, causing the island to shake, but the true cataclysm occurs aboard the Dominator saucer. The seed device rolls out, revealing itself to a horrified Rago and Toba, who realize their impending doom just before the ship spectacularly explodes in space. Dulkis is saved from total annihilation, experiencing only a localized volcanic eruption on the island, much to Jamie's immediate concern about their own proximity.
