The Krotons Part 3

When the Doctor, Zoe, and Jamie arrive on a planet enslaved by crystalline beings called the Krotons, they must incite a rebellion among the Gonds and stop the Krotons from draining their intelligence to power their Dynatrope machine.

The Doctor, Zoe, and Jamie arrive on a planet where the Krotons, crystalline beings, control the population known as the Gonds. The Krotons select the most intelligent Gonds to enter "Learning Halls," but in reality, they are drained of their intelligence to power the Kroton's machine, the Dynatrope. The Doctor and Zoe quickly realize the Krotons' sinister intentions after encountering the primitive Gonds exiled to the wastelands and learning about Abu-Gond's fate.

The Doctor and Zoe deliberately score high on the Krotons' tests to gain access to the Dynatrope, while Jamie is captured. Inside the Dynatrope control, the Krotons interrogate Jamie about the TARDIS while planning to drain the Doctor and Zoe's intelligence. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Zoe escape and begin searching for a way to stop the Krotons. The Gonds, led by Eelek, plan a revolt against the Krotons, but their primitive weapons are no match for Kroton technology. Selris, the former leader of the council, supports a more strategic approach. He knows the Krotons must be drawn into the open to be defeated.

The Doctor realizes the Krotons' bodies and technology are based on tellurium. He gathers sulphur, hoping to create a compound that will weaken them. Jamie manages to incapacitate one Kroton in the Dynatrope control, but the TARDIS gets attacked and disappears. The Doctor uses the TARDIS’s HADS system to rematerialize it safely. As Eelek prepares for a frontal assault. The Doctor urges Beta to synthesize hydrogen telluride to weaken the Krotons.

Selris plans to undermine three pillars supporting the Kroton machine in the Learning Hall. As the Krotons work to counteract the damage, the Dynatrope becomes increasingly unstable, and the Krotons' heads begins spinning out of control. The Dynatrope is close to exhaustion. Thara and Vana plan to help Beta in his lab, and the Doctor asks Zoe to take him to Beta. Ultimately, the combined efforts of the Doctor, the Gonds, and Beta lead to the Krotons' downfall, freeing the Gonds from their oppressors and restoring their capacity for independent thought.

Act 1

This act establishes the immediate peril and introduces the core conflicts facing the protagonists and the Gonds. The Doctor and Zoe, having narrowly escaped the Krotons' mind-draining Dynatrope, prioritize retrieving the TARDIS, which the Krotons attempt to destroy using a dispersion unit. Meanwhile, Jamie remains a captive in the Dynatrope control, undergoing interrogation by the Krotons, who seek information about the TARDIS and its capabilities, displaying their alien logic and disregard for organic life. Concurrently, the Gonds are deeply divided on how to confront their oppressors. Eelek, impatient and driven by a desire for immediate action, seeks to rally the Gonds for a direct, frontal assault against the Krotons, a plan Beta, the scientist, views as suicidal. Beta, however, has recently been influenced by the Doctor's insights, beginning to question the Krotons' control over Gond knowledge. Selris, the former council leader, is sidelined by Eelek's aggressive takeover, but his cautious approach hints at a more strategic resistance. The Doctor, through his scientific observation, quickly deduces the Krotons' tellurium-based physiology, leading him to gather sulphur with the intention of creating a chemical weapon. This act culminates in the TARDIS being directly attacked and disappearing, a moment of significant uncertainty for the protagonists, while Eelek's ascension to leadership solidifies the Gonds' commitment to what appears to be a desperate, ill-conceived rebellion. The stage is set for a two-pronged approach against the Krotons: the Gonds' physical uprising and the Doctor's scientific counter-measure.

Act 2

Following the TARDIS's apparent destruction, the Doctor reveals its Hostile Action Displacement System (HADS), allowing it to rematerialize safely, a moment of relief that shifts the Doctor's immediate focus back to aiding the Gonds. This act then sharply contrasts the two emerging strategies for rebellion. Eelek, now firmly in command of the council after usurping Selris, pushes ahead with his plan for a direct, frontal assault on the Krotons, dismissing Beta's scientific warnings and Selris's strategic counsel. However, Selris, despite being politically sidelined, reveals his own, more subtle and effective plan: to undermine the three structural pillars supporting the Krotons' Dynatrope machine from beneath the Learning Hall, aiming to draw the Krotons out into the open. The Doctor, recognizing the value of a scientific attack, tasks Beta with synthesizing hydrogen telluride, a potent chemical weapon derived from the sulphur he collected, which would exploit the Krotons' tellurium-based composition. Beta, despite initial reluctance, agrees to undertake this forbidden chemical research. Meanwhile, Jamie, still captive in the Dynatrope control, continues to learn about the Krotons' vulnerabilities, specifically their "exhaust" state, providing crucial intelligence. This act signifies the transition from planning to active preparation, as both the Gonds' physical sabotage and the Doctor's chemical warfare initiative begin to take shape, setting the stage for a coordinated, albeit risky, counter-offensive.

Act 3

This act plunges directly into the execution of the Gonds' strategic counter-offensive, marking the immediate escalation of the conflict. Under Selris's guidance, the Gonds begin their covert operation, using mallets and chains to fasten around the base of the Dynatrope machine's metal supports, actively working to destabilize the Krotons' power source. Simultaneously, the Krotons in the Dynatrope control room register the direct impact of these actions; their gravitation feed drops, and the Dynatrope's balance falters, causing their heads to spin erratically. The Krotons acknowledge the machine's impending "exhaust" within three hours, indicating the success of the Gonds' sabotage and the critical time pressure. Recognizing the urgency and the convergence of their efforts, the Doctor and Zoe rush to Beta's laboratory. The Doctor provides Beta with detailed instructions for synthesizing the hydrogen telluride, emphasizing the critical importance of this chemical weapon against the Krotons. Thara and Vana also decide to stay and assist Beta, demonstrating a growing unity and resolve among the Gonds, moving beyond their initial fear and political divisions. The act concludes with the Dynatrope machine in a state of increasing instability and the Doctor's scientific solution in active development, setting the immediate scene for the story's climax, where the combined physical and chemical attacks are poised to bring about the Krotons' downfall, as foreshadowed by the narrative foundation.
