Act 1

The Doctor and Varan escape Skybase, their reluctant partnership solidified by the Doctor's use of Venusian karate to compel Varan's cooperation. They navigate the hostile surface of Solos, where the Doctor quickly deduces the increasingly dangerous 'firestorms' are not divine wrath but atmospheric disturbances directly linked to the Marshal's ongoing experiments. Meanwhile, deep within the mines, Ky and Jo, in hiding, discuss the Marshal's sinister goal: to render Solos' atmosphere breathable only for Overlords, effectively eradicating the Solonian people. Jo witnesses a mutant firsthand, prompting Ky to reveal these 'horrible' creatures are, in fact, their own people, tragically transformed by the Marshal's science. Above, the Marshal, furious at the Doctor's escape and the continued evasion of Ky and Jo, plots a comprehensive elimination plan, targeting all his adversaries. The Doctor, driven by the urgent need to locate Jo and Ky, successfully convinces a hesitant Varan to lead him deeper into the perilous mines, overcoming Varan's deep-seated fear of the mutated inhabitants. This act meticulously establishes the immediate environmental and political dangers on Solos, introduces the primary antagonists and their ruthless motivations, and sets the stage for the protagonists' perilous journey into the planet's depths.

Act 2

The Doctor and Varan enter the mines, encountering Ky actively defending Jo from aggressive mutants. During the struggle, Jo flees into a mysterious, brightly lit cavern, encountering a 'silvery figure' before collapsing and disappearing, adding a significant complication. The Doctor, Ky, and Varan finally meet, forming a brief, tense alliance as Varan reveals the Marshal's betrayal, aligning their immediate interests. The Doctor presents Ky with an ancient egg containing tablets, hinting at a lost Solonian history that could be more valuable than weapons, but Ky cannot read the 'old ones' language. However, their alliance fractures as Varan, rejecting the Doctor's methods, departs to rally his people for direct battle against the Overlords, despite the Doctor's warnings. Meanwhile, the Marshal intensifies his plans, preparing gas grenades to wipe out all inhabitants of the mines. Professor Jaeger warns the Marshal about Solos' escalating temperature and mutation rate, suggesting a planetary climate crisis, but the Marshal dismisses these concerns, prioritizing the extermination of the 'Mutts.' Varan, returning to his village, finds it deserted and begins to experience mutation himself, leading to a personal crisis and a renewed, desperate resolve to fight.

Act 3

The Marshal initiates his ruthless plan, strategically deploying Stubbs and Cotton under the false pretense of finding the Doctor, ensuring they too will be caught in the impending gas attack alongside their targets. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Ky, continuing their desperate search for Jo, discern that the central cave holds a profound, instinctual significance for the mutants, drawing them to its warmth and safety. They finally locate Jo, injured and disoriented, in a secluded side chamber, her discovery coinciding precisely with the arrival of Stubbs and Cotton. From Skybase, the Marshal, observing the unfolding situation, issues the chilling order to fire the gas grenades, simultaneously sealing all mine exits and irrevocably trapping everyone—Ky, Jo, the Doctor, Stubbs, Cotton, and the numerous mutants—within the subterranean network. As the thick, heavy gas begins its insidious drift through the passages, causing mutants to collapse, Jo vividly recounts her disorienting encounter with a 'silvery figure' amidst a strange, glowing light before she fainted, hinting at a new, unfolding mystery amidst the immediate peril. Cotton, now fully aware of the Marshal's treacherous intent, urgently warns the Doctor about the imminent gas attack. Concurrently, Varan, having returned to his village to find it deserted and now fully embracing his own accelerating mutation, resolutely rejects a passive death, preparing for a final, defiant stand. The act culminates with the Marshal triggering explosives to seal the mine entrance, observing the resulting smoke and debris, confident in his plan's success, leaving the Doctor and his allies in a dire, life-threatening cliffhanger as the toxic gas rapidly engulfs their refuge.
