The Mutants Part 4

When a group of survivors stumble upon a hidden laboratory on the planet Solos, they unravel a sinister plot by the Overlords to control the native population through atmospheric experiments, radiation, and forced mutation.

The episode begins with Jo, Ky, Stubbs, and Cotton navigating through a mine passage, avoiding mutants and hostile creatures. They encounter Professor Sondergaard, a scientist who has been living in hiding, studying the native Solonian culture and mutants. Sondergaard explains that the mutants are not a sickness, but a metamorphosis, an adaptive change that the Solonians undergo every five hundred years due to radiation exposure. The Doctor, Jo, and Sondergaard embark on a journey to understand the radiation cave and its connection to the Solonian life cycle. Meanwhile, the Marshal and Jaeger are preparing for a rocket launch to alter the planet's atmosphere, which will have catastrophic effects on the native population. As the group works to stop the rocket launch, Varan, a Solonian warrior, leads a rebellion against the Overlords. The episode culminates with a confrontation at Skybase, where the group faces off against the Marshal and Jaeger's forces. The Doctor and Sondergaard's research could hold the key to saving the Solonian population, but time is running out.

Act 1

The episode commences with Jo, the Doctor, Ky, Stubbs, and Cotton navigating treacherous mine passages, evading both dangerous mutants and the Marshal's relentless forces. A mysterious silver-suited figure guides them through the collapsing tunnels to a hidden, lead-lined laboratory. Inside, they discover Professor Sondergaard, a scientist long thought dead, who reveals himself to be a cheerful, bald human living in isolation. Sondergaard explains the natural radioactivity within the thaesium mines and details how Professor Jaeger's atmospheric experiments have drastically accelerated environmental changes across Solos, affecting its flora, fauna, and atmosphere. Simultaneously, the Marshal, driven by his agenda, issues orders to seal all mine exits and prepares for a critical rocket launch from Skybase, viewing it as a strategic "war" rather than a scientific endeavor. The Doctor, recognizing the profound significance of ancient Solonian tablets found in Sondergaard's lab, believes they hold the key to understanding the planet's ecological and biological shifts. A sudden, violent explosion causes a severe cave-in, forcing a critical split in the group. The Doctor and Sondergaard commit to remaining in the crumbling laboratory to decipher the vital tablets, while Jo, Ky, Stubbs, and Cotton embark on a perilous journey towards a native village, facing immediate threats from both the collapsing tunnels and the Marshal's patrolling guards. This act meticulously establishes the central mystery surrounding Solos's environmental crisis, introduces the key scientific and antagonistic figures, and initiates the diverging, high-stakes paths of the protagonists.

Act 2

Following the group's split, the Doctor and Sondergaard intensely work to decipher the Solonian tablets, uncovering that they represent a unique 500-year Solonian calendar. This revelation indicates the planet undergoes natural, cyclical changes due to its orbit, and the observed "mutations" are, in fact, an adaptive metamorphosis driven by thaesium radiation. The Doctor realizes the radiation cave, where Jo was previously found, is central to this evolutionary process. Despite Sondergaard's warnings about the cave's lethality, the Doctor resolves to enter it. Concurrently, Jo, Ky, Stubbs, and Cotton navigate the treacherous mine passages, encountering and subduing a guard before stumbling upon Varan's village. Varan, himself undergoing mutation, rallies his remaining warriors for a desperate act of revenge against the Overlords, viewing Jo and Ky as prime targets. Back at Skybase, the Marshal receives an urgent message: an Earth Council investigator is en route, prompting him to accelerate the rocket launch to present a "fait accompli." The Doctor and Sondergaard locate and enter the highly radioactive cavern, where the Doctor, pushing past Sondergaard's collapse, retrieves a vital carved gemstone from its radiant heart, further confirming the cave's significance to the Solonian life cycle.

Act 3

With the critical gemstone in hand, the Doctor and Sondergaard conclude that the Solonian mutation is a natural, adaptive metamorphosis, not a sickness, and the crystal is vital to this process, though its function remains a mystery due to its lack of radioactivity. They realize the only place equipped to analyze it is Professor Jaeger's lab at Skybase. Meanwhile, Varan, holding Jo, Ky, Stubbs, and Cotton captive, exploits their status as "Overlords" to gain access to the Solos Transfer Station, intending to use them as human shields to infiltrate Skybase and exact his revenge. An urgent announcement blares across the system, recalling all Skybase personnel and initiating the final countdown for the rocket launch, creating a desperate race against time. The Marshal, informed of unauthorized personnel in the transfer section, ruthlessly orders the countdown to continue, prioritizing his agenda over safety. As Varan's group approaches Skybase's Bac Decon, they are met with a hail of gunfire from the Marshal's guards, resulting in the immediate deaths of Varan's warriors. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Sondergaard, still navigating the collapsing mine passages, push towards Skybase, with Sondergaard collapsing once more from the strain. The act culminates in a violent confrontation at Skybase, setting the stage for a desperate struggle to stop the rocket launch and save the Solonian population.
