Carnival of Monsters Part 3

The Doctor and Jo, fugitives from a space port, navigate a miniscope containing monstrous creatures called Drashigs, while also thwarting the sinister plans of Kalik, who seeks to exploit the situation for intergalactic rebellion.

In the episode 'Carnival of Monsters - Episode Three', the Doctor and Jo find themselves trapped inside a miniscope, a device used to contain and observe specimens. The miniscope is part of a space port's collection, where various alien species are kept for study and exhibition. The Doctor and Jo, having escaped from a countryside encounter with monstrous Drashigs, discover that they are inside this scope, which is part of a much larger, complex system managed by the space port's crew.

The story begins with the Doctor and Jo fleeing from Drashigs in the countryside. They soon find themselves in the space port, where they encounter various characters, including Vorg, Shirna, Kalik, and Pletrac. The crew is discussing the containment of Drashigs within the miniscope and the potential consequences of their escape.

As the narrative progresses, Kalik reveals his plan to use the Drashigs to create chaos and destabilize President Zarb's government, thereby paving the way for his own rebellion. Meanwhile, the Doctor and Jo navigate through the inner workings of the miniscope, trying to evade the Drashigs and find a way out.

The Doctor's knowledge of the miniscope's mechanics and his lateral thinking help them devise a plan to escape. They use rope from the ship to create a makeshift pulley system and manage to evade the creatures.

However, their actions inadvertently lead to the Drashigs breaking free from their circuit, causing chaos and power failures in the space port. The episode culminates with the Doctor and Jo escaping, the Drashigs causing destruction, and the scope's power failing.

Throughout the episode, themes of confinement, rebellion, and the ethics of containing and observing alien life forms are explored. The Doctor's character is highlighted through his resourcefulness and determination to protect Jo and outsmart their adversaries.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor and Jo desperately fleeing a massive, legless Drashig across a marshy countryside, realizing more of the scent-hunting creatures are present. Simultaneously, within a space port, Vorg, Shirna, Pletrac, and Kalik discuss the Drashigs contained in a miniscope, revealing their destructive power, having once consumed an entire spaceship. Kalik's probing questions hint at his sinister interest. As the Doctor and Jo are cornered by three Drashigs, a giant 'hand' intervenes, temporarily saving them. Retreating into a cave, the Doctor makes a crucial deduction: they are not in the real world, but trapped inside a miniscope, a forbidden device designed to observe sentient lifeforms. He explains the implications of their confinement and the Time Lords' ban on such devices. Back in the space port, Shirna and Vorg observe the Drashigs pursuing the 'Tellurians' (Doctor and Jo) and express concern about them breaking their circuit. A Drashig then violently smashes through a wall within the scope's internal mechanisms, confirming the immediate danger. Kalik, Pletrac, and Orum discuss the legal ramifications, with Kalik subtly pushing for rigid adherence to regulations, laying groundwork for his later manipulations. The Doctor and Jo are now fully aware of their entrapment and the escalating threat from the creatures within the miniscope's complex internal workings.

Act 2

With the realization of their confinement, the Doctor and Jo navigate the miniscope's narrow internal sections, attempting to outmaneuver the relentless Drashigs. Meanwhile, Vorg and Shirna in the space port discover the Drashigs have broken free from their designated circuit and are roaming unchecked within the scope's complex systems. This escalating chaos directly serves Kalik's hidden agenda. He pulls Orum aside, revealing his full, ambitious plan: to exploit the Drashigs' escape to destabilize President Zarb's government, blame Zarb's 'liberal-minded weakness,' and incite a rebellion, positioning himself as the new leader. This revelation significantly raises the political stakes. Inside the scope, the Doctor and Jo face a seemingly insurmountable obstacle—a sheer drop. Employing 'lateral thinking,' the Doctor inspires Jo to realize they can retrieve rope from the ship, which is also contained within the miniscope, to descend the shaft. Their plan is immediately complicated when they enter the ship's cargo hold and are discovered by Andrews and Daly, who mistake Jo for a stowaway. The ship's crew exhibits cyclical memory loss, unable to recall recent events, a symptom of their own confinement within the miniscope. The situation intensifies when a Drashig bursts through the ship's hull into the cargo hold, bringing the monstrous threat directly to the ship's crew and trapping the Doctor. Jo is separated from the Doctor, now forced to contend with both the Drashig and the confused, forgetful crew.

Act 3

The Drashig, now fully inside the ship's cargo hold, proves impervious to bullets, forcing Andrews and Daly to retreat. Simultaneously, Kalik subtly ensures the eradicator, a device capable of destroying the scope, remains unattended, a calculated move to prevent the Drashigs' premature destruction and further his rebellion. Pletrac arrives with President Zarb's orders to deport the Lurmans and jettison their machine, including the Tellurian vessel. He discovers Kalik's unauthorized actions regarding the eradicator, leading to Kalik's immediate suspension. Despite Daly's attempts to protect her, Jo insists on returning to the Doctor. As another Drashig breaches a cargo hatch, Daly fires a tommy gun, driving it back. Below deck, Andrews, in a desperate act, lights and throws sticks of dynamite into the hole, causing massive explosions that seemingly destroy the Drashigs. The Doctor, witnessing the aftermath, grimly declares, 'That's done it,' recognizing the profound consequence of Andrews' actions. Back in the space port, Shirna and Vorg observe a widespread power failure across all miniscope circuits, directly linked to the Drashigs' destruction. The Scope is failing, its generators, though built to last forever, cannot withstand the damage. While the Doctor fixes a rope to descend further into the damaged scope, Jo attempts to explain the 'monster' and the crew's cyclical memory loss to a bewildered Daly and Claire, who remain oblivious to their true predicament. The Doctor discovers a new hexagonal door, hinting at another potential escape route, as the miniscope's power continues to drop, leaving its fate, and that of its inhabitants, uncertain.
