Carnival of Monsters Part 4

The Doctor, a time-traveling alien, must rescue his companion and others trapped in a sinister intergalactic carnival's collection of lifeforms, while outwitting the ruthless authorities of Inter Minor.

The Doctor, a time-traveling alien, finds himself on Inter Minor, where he encounters a sinister carnival collecting various lifeforms. The carnival's proprietor, Vorg, and his assistant, Shirna, are using a machine called the Scope to collect and display these creatures. However, the Doctor soon discovers that the machine is malfunctioning and that the creatures are in grave danger. The Doctor must navigate the complexities of Inter Minor's bureaucracy, led by the ruthless Chairman Pletrac, to rescue his companion, Jo, and the other trapped creatures. Along the way, he forms an uneasy alliance with Vorg, who may have his own motives for helping the Doctor. As the situation escalates, the Doctor must prevent a disaster that could have far-reaching consequences for the planet and its inhabitants.

Act 1

The Doctor, now restored to his proper size, immediately faces an eradication order from Chairman Pletrac of Inter Minor's Admissions Tribunal. Commissioner Kalik intervenes, citing procedural irregularities, which allows the Doctor to assert his authority and reveal the Miniscope's operation is illegal under intergalactic law. The Doctor demands to rescue his companion, Jo, who remains trapped inside the device. Vorg, the carnival proprietor, and his assistant Shirna, are revealed to be technically inept, having won the Miniscope in a gamble and possessing no understanding of its complex functions. Meanwhile, Kalik and Orum, political rivals to Pletrac, conspire to sabotage the eradicator and intentionally release the Drashigs from the Miniscope, aiming to create a disaster that will discredit President Zarb's regime. Jo, having briefly escaped, is recaptured by the crew of the SS Bernice. The Doctor discovers the Miniscope's life support systems are failing critically and devises a plan to link it to the TARDIS for a mass rescue, but requires a specific component. Pletrac, growing suspicious of Vorg's attempts to flee, enforces strict quarantine regulations, trapping the carnival owners. The act culminates with the Doctor preparing to re-enter the malfunctioning Miniscope, while Kalik secretly facilitates the Drashigs' escape, setting the stage for an imminent catastrophe.

Act 2

Inside the rapidly deteriorating Miniscope, the Doctor and Jo struggle to navigate the failing circuitry, racing against the machine's imminent collapse. Outside, Vorg and Shirna attempt to operate the Doctor's improvised TARDIS-link contraption, but their profound technical ignorance creates further complications. Unbeknownst to them, Kalik actively assists the Drashigs in breaking through a panel in the Scope's outer hull, directly accelerating the disaster he meticulously planned. Simultaneously, the crew of the SS Bernice succumb to the Miniscope's environmental failures, experiencing heat exhaustion and oxygen deprivation, underscoring the widespread danger. As the Drashigs burst into the spaceport, attacking Kalik and causing widespread panic, Pletrac attempts to use the eradicator only to discover it has been sabotaged. In a moment of accidental heroism, Vorg, utilizing a part Shirna found (unbeknownst to him, the very trizon Kalik removed from the eradicator), repairs the weapon and successfully destroys the rampaging Drashigs. The Doctor and Jo, having reached a critical point inside the Miniscope, collapse as Vorg activates the final phase of the rescue, causing the Scope to hum, creatures to vanish, and the Doctor and Jo to fade from existence before the entire machine violently explodes.

Act 3

The Doctor and Jo reappear, safe and restored to full size, confirming their successful escape and the complete destruction of the Miniscope. Jo questions the fate of the other trapped creatures, and the Doctor explains his TARDIS-linked reprogramming returned them to their original space-time coordinates. This outcome is immediately confirmed by a scene aboard the SS Bernice, where Captain Daly and Claire are back in their cabin, seemingly unaware of their abduction or the passage of time, now approaching Bombay in 1926. The Doctor and Jo prepare for their departure from Inter Minor. Chairman Pletrac, mistakenly attributing the defeat of the Drashigs to Vorg's 'valour,' expresses extreme gratitude and offers him an honor. Shirna voices concern about their financial ruin due to the Scope's destruction, but Vorg quickly reveals his true nature as a con artist. He immediately engages Pletrac in a game of 'magum pods and yorrow seed,' swiftly winning a significant amount of credit bars from the naive Chairman. The Doctor and Jo observe Vorg's immediate success, concluding he will thrive on Inter Minor. The TARDIS dematerializes, leaving Vorg to continue his carnival tricks and the Inter Minor authorities none the wiser about the true nature of the events that transpired.
