Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor severely weakened from a gunshot wound, relying on Jo Grant to help him into the TARDIS. Inside, he attempts to send a telepathic message to the Time Lords but collapses into a deep coma, his body rapidly deteriorating with ice crystals forming on his skin. Jo, isolated and distressed, records log entries detailing the Doctor's critical condition, noting his lack of pulse and icy skin. The TARDIS materializes on an unknown planet, prompting Jo to make the difficult decision to venture out alone into the hostile jungle environment to seek help for the dying Doctor. This act establishes the immediate peril facing the protagonists and sets Jo on a perilous solo mission, marking a significant shift in her role from assistant to primary actor. The Doctor's attempt to contact the Time Lords hints at a larger cosmic struggle, while his rapid physical decline underscores the urgency of Jo's quest. Jo's determination to save the Doctor, despite her inexperience and fear, drives the initial narrative momentum. The alien jungle, with its aggressive flora and sudden climatic shifts, immediately presents a formidable challenge, emphasizing the isolation and danger of their new surroundings. Her discovery of strange statues near the TARDIS hints at a deeper history to the planet, further expanding the mystery. Jo's decision to leave the TARDIS, despite the unknown dangers, marks her commitment to finding a solution, propelling the story into its next phase, and highlighting her growing self-reliance in the face of crisis.

Act 2

Jo navigates the treacherous jungle of Spiridon, encountering strange, aggressive plant life and extreme environmental shifts. She discovers a crashed spaceship and, seeking assistance, is apprehended by Taron and Vaber, two members of a stranded group of explorers from Skaro. Jo explains her predicament, and Taron, a qualified space medic, reluctantly agrees to help the Doctor, though Vaber remains suspicious. As a patrol approaches, Jo is hidden for her safety. Meanwhile, the Doctor, trapped inside the TARDIS with dwindling oxygen, struggles to open the door. Taron and Vaber eventually locate the TARDIS, cut through the encrustation, and rescue the Doctor, who miraculously recovers. The Doctor immediately recognizes them as Thals and then reveals his identity as the legendary figure from their history, having been present during the Dalek war on Skaro generations ago, which both astonishes and alarms the Thals. This act escalates the immediate threats, introduces new allies (and potential adversaries), and fundamentally alters the Doctor's relationship with his environment through the revelation of his past. The Thals' initial skepticism about Earth and the TARDIS gives way to astonishment at the Doctor's claims, creating a pivotal turning point in their interaction.

Act 3

Following the Doctor's revelation, the Thals, particularly Vaber, express skepticism and suspicion regarding his claims and presence on Spiridon. Taron, however, is more open to the possibility, recognizing elements of their legends in the Doctor's story. The Thals then explain their dire situation: stranded on the hostile planet Spiridon, their ship damaged, their mission top-secret but seemingly failed, and their numbers significantly depleted by the environment and unseen threats. The Doctor, having recovered and now aware of the pervasive fungal infection, offers his assistance to the remaining Thals, proposing a combined effort to escape and achieve their objectives. This act solidifies the immediate dangers of Spiridon, establishes the Thals' covert mission as a central plot point, and sets the stage for a reluctant alliance, while simultaneously highlighting the escalating threat to Jo, who is discovered to be infected by the deadly fungus. The Doctor's offer of help, despite the Thals' distrust, positions him as a potential leader in their desperate struggle. The details of Spiridon's extreme climate and invisible inhabitants paint a grim picture of their survival odds, emphasizing the urgency of their situation. Jo's infection serves as a critical cliffhanger, raising the stakes for her personal safety and the group's overall mission.
