When former UNIT Captain Mike Yates investigates a mysterious spiritual retreat, he teams up with journalist Sarah Jane Smith to uncover the truth behind the retreat's sinister leader and a powerful crystal with telepathic properties.

The screenplay 'Planet of the Spiders - Part One' revolves around Mike Yates, a former UNIT captain, who becomes disillusioned with his past and seeks spiritual enlightenment. He visits a secluded spiritual retreat led by Tibetan monks, where he meets Sarah Jane Smith, a journalist. As they delve deeper into the retreat, they uncover the ominous plans of the retreat's leader, Lupton, who seeks to harness the power of a crystal from the planet Metebelis Three. This crystal, in the possession of Professor Herbert Clegg, a man with developing telepathic abilities, holds the key to unlocking new levels of consciousness and potentially catastrophic power. The Doctor and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart from UNIT become entangled in the mystery as they try to understand and counter the threats posed by the crystal and Lupton's cabal. The narrative weaves through themes of spirituality, power, and the consequences of playing with forces beyond human control. As tensions escalate, Mike, Sarah, the Doctor, and the Brigadier must navigate their way through hallucinations, physical threats, and moral dilemmas to prevent the misuse of the crystal's power.

Act 1

Mike Yates, a former UNIT Captain, arrives at the secluded Tidmarsh Manor spiritual retreat, seeking solace but instead discovering a clandestine group led by Lupton engaged in powerful, rhythmic chanting around a glowing mandala. His presence is noted by Lupton, who views him with suspicion. Concurrently, the Doctor and Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart attend a cabaret to observe Professor Herbert Clegg, a supposed mind-reader. The Doctor quickly discerns Clegg's genuine and potent telepathic and psychokinetic abilities, convincing the reluctant professor to assist in his research into ESP. Meanwhile, Lupton expresses concern to Cho-Je, a fellow monk, about the impending arrival of journalist Sarah Jane Smith, whom Yates has invited to investigate the retreat. Lupton's anxieties about the retreat's secrecy and the 'point of breakthrough' in their ritual are evident. Yates and Sarah drive to the retreat, where Yates reveals his suspicions about a hidden 'power' at play. Their journey culminates in a terrifying, shared hallucination of a tractor, which nearly causes a fatal accident. This incident profoundly convinces Sarah of the danger and solidifies her commitment to help Yates uncover the truth, setting the stage for their deeper infiltration.

Act 2

With Sarah Jane now convinced of the retreat's sinister nature, the parallel investigations intensify. At UNIT, the Doctor continues to test Professor Clegg, using an IRIS machine that reveals visions of Drashigs, hinting at the crystal's influence or Clegg's latent abilities. Sarah, under the guise of an interview, speaks with Cho-Je, who philosophically discusses meditation's purpose and gravely warns against the misuse of psychic powers by 'evil men.' This conversation underscores the potential for danger. A package arrives for the Doctor from Jo Grant in South America; Clegg, using his burgeoning telepathic skills, identifies its contents as the Metebelis Three crystal, a powerful blue gemstone 'from beyond the stars,' confirming its arrival and immense significance. Back at the retreat, Mike and Sarah conduct a superficial tour, observing students engaged in a mundane meditation class. Their attempt to maintain a low profile is shattered during a tense encounter with Lupton and Barnes, where Lupton's pointed remarks about 'dangerous roads' confirm his direct involvement in the earlier hallucination and his awareness of their true intentions. Feigning fear, Mike dramatically escorts Sarah away, only for them to immediately double back on foot, determined to infiltrate the retreat covertly. They gain entry through a window, encountering the simple-minded Tommy, whom Sarah placates with a brooch in exchange for his silence. Mike and Sarah then hide in the cellar, just as Lupton and his cabal enter, settling around the mandala to commence their powerful, ominous chanting ritual.

Act 3

The narrative converges as Lupton's cabal initiates their ritualistic chanting in the cellar, aiming to harness the crystal's power. Simultaneously, at the UNIT laboratory, the Doctor reads a letter from Jo Grant, unaware of the escalating danger. Professor Clegg, still under observation, fixates on the Metebelis Three crystal, which begins to emit an eerie blue glow. As the chanting intensifies at the retreat, a profound psychic disturbance manifests violently at UNIT. The laboratory is rocked by an unseen force, causing glassware to shatter and papers to fly chaotically. The Doctor, struggling against the powerful, invisible energy, desperately tries to reach Clegg and the now intensely glowing crystal. In a critical moment, he manages to snatch the crystal from Clegg's grasp. The instant the crystal leaves his hand, Clegg cries out in agony and then collapses, dying immediately. The Brigadier, horrified, moves to call for medical assistance, but the Doctor, grim-faced, confirms Clegg's death, leaving the Metebelis Three crystal as a clear instrument of deadly power and the cabal's ritual as its direct catalyst. This abrupt and fatal event serves as a shocking climax, leaving the Doctor with the dangerous crystal and a clear understanding of the immediate, lethal threat it poses, setting a dire tone for the unfolding conflict.
