The narrative beats that drive the story
The Doctor initiates a counter-offensive against the Ice Warriors by weaponizing the ancient statue, Aggedor, using the refinery's transporter system. This initial success melts two Ice Warriors, forcing the remaining forces to retreat. Sarah and Gebek celebrate, but Gebek reveals the miners' morale is shattered, as they believe Aggedor has turned against them. The Doctor devises a plan to restore their faith, arranging for Aggedor to appear before them. Meanwhile, Commander Azaxyr and the treacherous Engineer Eckersley learn of the Doctor's actions. Eckersley, boasting intimate knowledge of the refinery's hidden systems, promises to neutralize the Doctor. Gebek successfully demonstrates Aggedor's protective power to the skeptical miners, rallying them to fight. Eckersley observes this on a monitor, confirming the Doctor's control over Aggedor, and prepares to implement his own scheme, using the refinery's internal security systems against the Doctor. This act establishes the Doctor's tactical genius, the miners' wavering loyalty, and the antagonists' immediate, dangerous counter-strategy, setting the stage for direct confrontation.
Eckersley activates the refinery's internal security system, subjecting the Doctor to intense sonic pressure. The Doctor, aware of the escalating danger, orders Sarah to escape and warn Gebek, while he remains to continue directing Aggedor. Sarah reluctantly complies, navigating dangerous tunnels patrolled by Ice Warriors. Despite the debilitating security system, the Doctor maintains control of Aggedor, sending the creature to protect Gebek and the rallied miners from Ice Warrior ambushes. Gebek and his forces advance towards the Citadel, confronting Azaxyr's remaining warriors. Azaxyr attempts a final ambush in a corridor, resulting in casualties on both sides, but Gebek's forces ultimately overwhelm and kill Azaxyr. Simultaneously, the Doctor finally succumbs to Eckersley's maximum-intensity security system. Sarah, having reached the Citadel, confronts Eckersley in the communications room, believing the Doctor dead. Eckersley disarms Sarah and escapes, then kills a miner who attempts to apprehend him. He proceeds to the Throne Room, where he kidnaps Queen Thalira, intending to use her as a hostage for his escape, escalating the conflict from a military struggle to a personal abduction.
Sarah discovers the Doctor alive in the refinery; he explains he entered a sensory withdrawal trance to endure Eckersley's attack. They return to the Throne Room, where Gebek and Alpha Centauri inform them of Queen Thalira's kidnapping by Eckersley. The Doctor, realizing Eckersley's extensive knowledge of the mountain's tunnels, devises a plan to track him down. He retrieves the real Aggedor from its pit, using the creature's keen sense of smell as a bloodhound. With Gebek, Sarah, miners, and guards in pursuit, Aggedor tracks Eckersley and Thalira through the labyrinthine tunnels. Eckersley drags Thalira to a dead end, believing his spaceship is on the other side. The Doctor confronts Eckersley, who attempts to use Thalira as a shield. Thalira bites Eckersley, creating an opening for the Doctor to release Aggedor. Aggedor attacks Eckersley, crushing him in a powerful embrace. Eckersley manages to fire his weapon, killing Aggedor before succumbing to his injuries. With both Eckersley and Azaxyr defeated, Queen Thalira expresses her gratitude to the Doctor, offering him a position as Chancellor. The Doctor declines, recommending Gebek for the role, emphasizing merit over title. Alpha Centauri then announces that the Federation has negotiated a peace treaty, ending the war. Gebek informs the Doctor of the TARDIS's location, and the Doctor and Sarah depart Peladon, leaving the planet in a state of peace and with a new, deserving leader.
