Act 1

This act establishes Lupton's ambition and his alliance with the Metebelis spiders, driven by the power of the crystal. Lupton, having acquired the crystal, mentally links with the Spider Queen, who reveals their ultimate goal: the conquest of Earth. The Doctor, Sarah, and Mike investigate the crystal's disappearance at the spiritual retreat, suspecting Lupton. Tommy, a man with a child-like mind, is drawn to the crystal's beauty and secretly steals it from Lupton's room, adding it to his collection of 'pretties.' Lupton, unaware of the theft, attempts to exert his will over the Spider he hosts, discovering a nascent psychic ability within himself. The Spider, however, maintains control, compelling Lupton to lull the Doctor's suspicions. Upon realizing the crystal is missing, Lupton resolves to bluff the spiders and perform a ritual in the cellar. Sarah, alerted by Tommy, follows Lupton to the cellar. Tommy then informs the Doctor and Mike about Lupton and Sarah's presence in the cellar. Lupton vanishes during his ritual, and Sarah, stepping onto the mandala, is also transported away, prompting the Doctor to commit to following her to Metebelis Three in the TARDIS.

Act 2

This act immediately plunges Sarah into the perilous environment of Metebelis Three, an alien desert world. She arrives disoriented and is quickly captured by Tuar, a young 'two leg' native who immediately suspects her of being a spy for the oppressive 'eight legs' (spiders). The village elders, particularly Sabor and Arak, debate her fate, with Tuar advocating for her immediate execution. Sarah struggles to explain her presence, inadvertently using the 'forbidden word' (spiders), which further fuels Tuar's suspicion. The arrival of the Spider Queen's guard, demanding Arak's surrender for an earlier transgression against a field guard, escalates the tension. Sabor, Arak's father, bravely steps forward to take his son's place, knowing the penalty is death and consumption by the spiders. He makes this sacrifice to preserve Arak, who is seen as the village's last hope. The Spider Queen accepts Sabor's sacrifice, demonstrating her ruthless authority. As Sabor is led away and his wife Neska is incapacitated for resisting, Sarah is spotted by the Spider Queen, who orders her guards to apprehend the stranger, thus placing Sarah in direct danger from the ruling arachnid power.
