The narrative beats that drive the story
The narrative opens with a tense confrontation between villagers and spider guards, culminating in the Queen's assertion of power and the capture of Sabor. Sarah, deeply distressed, cradles the gravely injured Doctor, whom Tuar believes is dead. Sarah's desperate pleas and the Doctor's faint movements, however, confirm he is still alive, offering a fragile glimmer of hope amidst the despair. Concurrently, on Earth, Barnes and his associates discuss a missing Lupton, while young Tommy, drawn to a glowing crystal, experiences a transformative event, gaining enhanced reading abilities. Back on Metebelis, the Spider Queen convenes her council, revealing internal power struggles as Lupton and a defiant spider sister present the crystal, asserting their leverage over the Queen. The Queen, however, counters by revealing the presence of Earth spies—the Doctor and Sarah—and demands Sarah's capture, temporarily halting their negotiations. Amidst the villagers' despair and arguments about resistance, the Doctor briefly awakens, instructing Sarah to retrieve a specific 'machine' from the TARDIS that can save him. Driven by this urgent directive, Sarah bravely ventures to the TARDIS, successfully retrieves the vital satchel, but is immediately confronted and captured by Lupton, plunging her into immediate peril after a moment of renewed purpose.

Following Sarah's capture, the villagers, led by Arak, courageously retrieve the satchel containing the Doctor's machine from the TARDIS. The Doctor, still weak, uses the device, which emits a buzzing sound and bursts of energy, bringing him a degree of recovery before he falls back into sleep. On Earth, Mike, having spied on Barnes' group, confronts them and is knocked unconscious, further entangling the Earth subplot. As dawn breaks on Metebelis, the Doctor fully awakens, his health significantly improved. He engages the villagers in conversation, learning the detailed history of their ancestors, the crash of their starship, and the origin of the spiders on Metebelis Three—ordinary Earth spiders enlarged and empowered by the blue crystals found in the mountains. Simultaneously, Sarah, now a prisoner alongside Sabor, receives similar exposition about the spiders' evolution and their ruthless rule. Armed with this crucial knowledge, the Doctor devises a plan to counter the spiders' attacks, requesting various pebbles from the villagers. He uses the TARDIS device to scan these stones, successfully identifying one that absorbs the spiders' energy. With this newfound protection and the device, the Doctor embarks on a daring infiltration of the spider city. He neutralizes a guard's attack using the device and encounters Lupton, who orders his execution.
