Act 1

The narrative opens with Barnes, Moss, Land, and Keaver, controlled by spiders, relentlessly searching for the powerful blue crystal. Inside K'Anpo's room, the Doctor and Sarah Jane possess the crystal, but the Queen Spider seizes control of Sarah Jane, demanding the artifact. K'Anpo intervenes, guiding Sarah Jane to resist the spider's influence, ultimately freeing her. During this intense struggle, K'Anpo reveals his true identity as a Time Lord and the Doctor's former mentor, explaining the concept of regeneration and the Doctor's 'greed for knowledge.' This revelation clarifies the Doctor's past and the deeper implications of his actions. Faced with the escalating threat of the Great One, K'Anpo reveals the Doctor's only path: to return the crystal to the Great One, an act that K'Anpo confirms will lead to the Doctor's demise. Despite the grave warning, the Doctor accepts his fate, preparing for a journey he knows will be his last in his current form. Meanwhile, outside, Tommy and Mike Yates valiantly attempt to defend K'Anpo's room against the mind-controlled men, creating a diversion for the Doctor's departure. This act establishes the immediate peril, deepens the Doctor's personal stakes, and sets the stage for his self-sacrificial mission.

Act 2

The Doctor materializes his TARDIS outside the Spider City, where he encounters Arak and Tuar, who reluctantly guide him towards the Crystal Cave. Before reaching the Great One, the Doctor enters the Spider's Council Chamber, confronting the Queen Spider. He refuses to surrender the crystal to her, asserting his intention to deliver it only to the Great One itself, defying the Council's authority. Lupton, a human ally of the spiders, attempts to seize the crystal, but the Queen prevents him, citing the Great One's omniscience. When Lupton openly rebels against the Queen, she zaps him, demonstrating her ruthless control. Concurrently, back in K'Anpo's room, K'Anpo, having expended his energy, undergoes his own regeneration, transforming into Cho-Je before Sarah Jane, Mike, and Tommy, further illustrating the Time Lord cycle of renewal. The Doctor finally reaches the Crystal Cave and confronts the colossal Great One. The Great One reveals its grand scheme to integrate the crystal into its brain-pattern web, aiming to amplify its mental powers to infinity and become the ruler of the entire universe. The Doctor, with his remaining time dwindling, urgently warns the Great One that completing the circuit will lead to an uncontrollable energy buildup and its inevitable self-destruction. Disregarding the Doctor's warning, the Great One takes the crystal, integrates it, and declares its triumph, only to immediately experience immense pain as its body begins to glow red and burn, confirming the Doctor's prophecy.

Act 3

Following the Great One's catastrophic self-destruction, its psychic influence dissipates, causing the spiders controlling Barnes and his men to die and fall from their backs, freeing the humans from their thrall. The Doctor, severely weakened and staggering, barely makes it back to his TARDIS before the crystal mountain explodes, signifying the complete eradication of the Great One's threat. The TARDIS then materializes in the UNIT laboratory, weeks later, where Sarah Jane and the Brigadier are discussing the Doctor's prolonged absence and Sarah Jane's fear that he is truly gone. The Doctor, frail and near collapse, stumbles out of the TARDIS, confirming Sarah Jane's fears about his return from the Crystal Cave. He explains that he 'had to face his fear,' prioritizing this act over merely 'going on living.' As Sarah Jane desperately pleads with him not to die, the Doctor's current incarnation appears to pass away. However, Cho-Je (K'Anpo) materializes, reassuring them that the Doctor is not dead but merely undergoing a forced regeneration due to the Metebelis crystals. Cho-Je explains that he will 'give the process a little push' to accelerate his transformation into a new man, warning them of potential erratic behavior. With a final gesture, Cho-Je fades away, and the Doctor's body begins to visibly change, culminating in the complete regeneration into his Fourth incarnation. This act provides the ultimate resolution to the Doctor's personal sacrifice, ensuring his survival and setting the stage for future adventures with a new persona.
