The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith find themselves trapped on a planet controlled by intelligent spiders, who seek to invade Earth using a powerful blue crystal. The spiders, led by the ruthless Queen, have discovered that the crystal was not brought to their planet, Metebelis, and they plan to invade Earth to retrieve it. The Doctor and Sarah soon learn that the crystal is actually hidden on Earth, and they must work with various allies, including a group of humans and a spiritual leader named K'Anpo, to prevent the invasion and outwit the spiders. Along the way, they encounter various obstacles, including mind control, energy bolts, and treacherous terrain. As the stakes grow higher, the Doctor and Sarah must use their wits and resourcefulness to outmaneuver the spiders and restore balance to the planet.

Act 1

This act initiates the central conflict and outlines the immediate stakes. The narrative opens on Metebelis, where the Spider Queen's council faces a critical revelation: the powerful blue crystal, essential for their planned invasion, remains hidden on Earth. This discovery ignites internal strife among the spiders, with the Queen's leadership questioned and a potential coronation threatened, forcing her to assert her authority by declaring her intention to consult the mysterious Great One. Simultaneously, the Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith are introduced in a precarious state of captivity, bound in a spider larder. The Doctor, ever resourceful, deduces their situation and learns of a nascent human resistance led by Arak, planning a daring rescue attempt for Sabor and the "two strangers," bolstered by protective headbands. Sarah's subsequent separation from the Doctor leads to a crucial encounter with the Spider Queen. In a significant twist, the Queen, expressing profound concern over the potential destruction her council's invasion plans could unleash, proposes an unexpected alliance. She offers to facilitate Sarah and the Doctor's escape back to Earth to retrieve the crystal, contingent upon the liberation of the enslaved humans. This negotiation transforms the immediate goal from simple escape to a complex, strategic mission, intertwining the protagonists' survival with the fate of both planets. The Doctor, having already demonstrated his ingenuity by freeing himself from his webbed restraints, is now poised to act, unaware of Sarah's newly forged, precarious alliance. The act concludes with the crystal's location firmly established as Earth and the emergence of intricate, shifting loyalties that will drive the unfolding narrative.

Act 2

This act propels the narrative forward with escalating conflicts and the emergence of new threats, setting the stage for the invasion. On Earth, Mike, held captive by Barnes, leverages his knowledge of Lupton's connection to the spiders. He convinces Barnes to re-establish contact through the ancient mandala ceremony, offering his participation as a means to retrieve Sarah Jane Smith. This decision unknowingly opens a direct portal for the spider invasion. Back on Metebelis, Lupton, now under the subtle but firm mind-control of the spiders, is forced to align his plans with their invasion strategy, despite his initial protestations. Concurrently, Tommy, having gained heightened intelligence, pieces together fragmented conversations about Lupton and the "cellar," leading him to retrieve the blue crystal and seek counsel from Cho-Je. The Doctor, following an illusory call from Sarah, arrives at the Crystal Cave, where he has a chilling encounter with the Great One. The Great One reveals her immense power, demonstrating mind control over the Doctor and demanding the return of the "last perfect crystal of power." This confrontation solidifies her as the ultimate antagonist. As the mandala ceremony reaches its peak on Earth, spiders materialize in the cellar, incapacitating Cho-Je and Mike, marking the beginning of the invasion. Simultaneously, Sarah, now equipped with a new teleportation ability taught by the Spider Queen, reunites with the Doctor in their cell. They escape Metebelis, leaving the human resistance to continue Sabor's rescue, and dematerialize in the TARDIS, returning to Earth just as the invasion takes hold.

Act 3

This act plunges the Doctor and Sarah into the immediate aftermath of the invasion on Earth, leading to a crucial meeting with K'Anpo. The TARDIS materializes directly into the invaded cellar, where the Doctor and Sarah confront the chilling reality of the spider's success: Barnes, Moss, Keaver, and Land are now possessed, acting as hosts for the eight-legged invaders. A brief, tense skirmish ensues as the possessed humans attack, but the Doctor, using a stone to absorb their energy bolts, and guided by the newly intelligent Tommy, manages to escape the cellar. Tommy, despite being zapped, demonstrates his resilience and quick thinking by locking the possessed individuals inside, temporarily containing the immediate threat. Sarah expresses concern for Mike and Cho-Je, who remain unconscious but safe, highlighting the collateral damage of the invasion. As they navigate the spiritual retreat, Tommy, now fully aware and articulate, guides the Doctor and Sarah to K'Anpo, the Abbot. The meeting with K'Anpo is steeped in an air of pre-existing knowledge and quiet authority. K'Anpo immediately recognizes the Doctor and Sarah, and his ability to speak Tibetan with the Doctor, along with his calm demeanor, suggests a deeper understanding of the unfolding crisis. The Doctor begins to recount his story of the blue crystal, only for K'Anpo to interject with a knowing "Found?", hinting that he already possesses significant insight into the crystal's origins and importance. The act concludes with the Doctor poised to reveal the full scope of the threat to K'Anpo, setting the stage for the final confrontation and resolution.
