Robot Part 1

When a rogue robot begins stealing crucial technology, the UNIT team, led by Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart and aided by the unpredictable Doctor, must track it down and stop it before it falls into the wrong hands.

In the screenplay 'Robot - Part One', a powerful robot escapes and begins stealing advanced technology, including plans for a disintegrator gun and a focusing generator. The UNIT team, led by Brigadier Alistair Lethbridge-Stewart, works alongside the eccentric Doctor to track down the robot and prevent its misuse. Sarah Jane Smith, a journalist and UNIT collaborator, becomes entangled in the investigation, visiting the Think Tank research facility and encountering the disillusioned robotics expert, Professor Kettlewell. As the Doctor and the UNIT team close in on the robot, they uncover its seemingly intelligent and selective targeting of specific technology. The story unfolds with action, humor, and intrigue, showcasing the Doctor's wit and resourcefulness as he navigates the UNIT team's efforts to contain the robot's destructive potential.

Act 1

The narrative opens with the Doctor's chaotic and disorienting regeneration within the UNIT laboratory, marking a significant change in his persona. Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart, Sarah Jane Smith, and the newly introduced medical officer Lieutenant Sullivan (Harry) observe the Doctor's initial confusion, which manifests in nonsensical pronouncements and a struggle to recall his past. Despite his disorientation, the Doctor quickly reasserts his eccentric nature, challenging Harry's attempts to keep him confined to the sick bay and demonstrating surprising physical agility by karate-chopping a brick and skipping rope. Concurrently, an unseen, formidable robot executes a precise and destructive theft at a highly secured Weapons Research Centre, effortlessly breaching electrified barriers and armed guards to steal top-secret plans for a new disintegrator gun. This incident serves as the inciting event, immediately establishing a significant and mysterious threat. The Brigadier, recognizing the unusual nature of the robbery, discusses the matter with Sarah, implicitly acknowledging his reliance on the Doctor's unconventional methods. Sarah, meanwhile, leverages her journalistic connections to secure a visitor's pass to the advanced Think Tank research facility, setting up a parallel line of inquiry. The Doctor, after several attempts to depart in the TARDIS, is ultimately convinced by Sarah to remain and assist UNIT, his memory of his companions and his role as scientific advisor slowly returning. His decision to re-engage with the world and address the burgeoning crisis marks a pivotal turning point, shifting his focus from personal recovery to the urgent need to understand and counter the enigmatic robotic threat. This act firmly establishes the Doctor's new, more physical and playful persona, re-affirms his essential bond with UNIT, and introduces a powerful, elusive adversary, laying the groundwork for the escalating conflict.

Act 2

Act Two immediately escalates the threat, opening with a second, more brazen robbery by the mysterious robot. This time, it targets a UNIT stores room, efficiently selecting control circuitry vital for a powerful technological device. The Doctor, now fully engaged, investigates the scene of the first crime, deducing the robot's immense weight and non-human nature from a flattened dandelion. He quickly connects the stolen plans and circuitry to the potential construction of a disintegrator gun, accurately predicting the robot's next target: a focusing generator. The Brigadier, taking the threat seriously, mobilizes UNIT to establish an "impregnable" defense at Emmett's Electronics, where the generators are stored. Despite UNIT's extensive security measures, including armed patrols, air cover, and a fortified vault, the Doctor expresses skepticism about the term "impregnable." His doubts prove prophetic as the robot effortlessly breaches the defenses by drilling *up* through the vault floor, killing a soldier, and successfully stealing the focusing generator. This dramatic failure of UNIT's conventional methods underscores the robot's advanced capabilities and the inadequacy of human countermeasures, marking a significant defeat for the team. Simultaneously, Sarah Jane Smith pursues her independent investigation at the Think Tank research facility. She meets Director Hilda Winters and assistant Arnold Jellicoe, and despite their attempts to deflect, she uncovers the empty Robotics Section previously occupied by Professor Kettlewell. Her persistent questioning hints at a deeper, suppressed history regarding Kettlewell's work and his disillusionment with conventional science. This act establishes the robot as an unstoppable force, deepens the mystery surrounding its origins and purpose, and sets Sarah on a path of parallel discovery, highlighting the multi-faceted approach required to tackle the escalating crisis.

Act 3

Following UNIT's decisive failure to prevent the robot's third theft, Act Three shifts focus to deepening the mystery and Sarah's independent initiative. The Brigadier and UNIT investigate the robot's escape route from Emmett's Electronics, discovering a steaming hole in the ground and large, oblong footprints. The Doctor deduces that the perpetrator did not require oxygen, further confirming its non-human, possibly mechanical, nature. This new evidence reinforces the extraordinary challenge UNIT faces. Meanwhile, Sarah Jane Smith visits Professor Kettlewell, the disillusioned robotics expert from Think Tank, at his home. Kettlewell, a reclusive and eccentric figure, vehemently denies any ongoing work in robotics, expressing his complete disillusionment with conventional science and his current focus on alternative energy. Despite his dismissive attitude, Sarah notices a piece of rope in his house, a subtle detail that piques her suspicion and suggests Kettlewell may be concealing more than he reveals. Her intuition, combined with the evasiveness she encountered at Think Tank, prompts her to take a bold, independent step. Deciding to re-investigate the Think Tank facility, Sarah cleverly tricks the gate guard by feigning a forgotten notebook. She then bypasses security by climbing a balustrade and stealthily makes her way towards the Robotics Section. This act concludes with Sarah embarking on a risky, unauthorized infiltration, driven by her journalistic instincts and growing suspicion. Her actions underscore a critical divergence in investigative approaches, as she pursues a more direct, albeit dangerous, path to uncover the truth behind Kettlewell's past work and its potential connection to the rogue robot, setting up a direct confrontation with the hidden elements of the Think Tank.
