The Doctor, Harry, and Sarah find themselves transported to a futuristic space station after the Doctor accidentally activates the TARDIS's helmic regulator. As they explore the station, they discover a series of rooms containing advanced equipment, a tranquiller room where Sarah is taken, and a cryogenic chamber filled with pods containing cryogenically frozen humans. The Doctor and Harry must navigate the station's dangers, including an automatic guard and a mysterious entity that has severed cables, to rescue Sarah and uncover the purpose of the ark. Act 1

The TARDIS materializes in a dark, airless section of a futuristic space station after Harry accidentally activates the helmic regulator. The Doctor, Harry, and Sarah emerge into the unfamiliar environment, immediately facing the challenge of limited oxygen. The Doctor quickly restores power, illuminating a control room filled with advanced, non-functional equipment. Sarah, exploring ahead, becomes trapped in an adjacent room as the door silently closes behind her, and the dwindling air supply causes her to lose consciousness. The Doctor and Harry work frantically to open the door, only to find themselves also trapped with the unconscious Sarah when the door mechanism fails again. The Doctor diagnoses severed cables in the oxygen supply and, despite the worsening air quality affecting him, successfully repairs them using his sonic screwdriver, restoring breathable air and allowing the door to open. As Sarah recovers, an automatic infra-red guard activates, trapping the Doctor and Harry in their current room and zapping anything organic that moves. Simultaneously, Sarah is transported away by a matter transmitter embedded in the couch she rested on. The Doctor and Harry, using a desk for cover and Harry's shoe as a decoy, manage to disable the guard. The Doctor then deduces Sarah’s internal relay, confirming she remains within the station, setting the stage for their search.

Act 2

Following Sarah's mysterious disappearance via internal relay, the Doctor and Harry embark on a search through the vast space station. They navigate a transom, a walkway offering views of space, where Harry observes an unseen entity moving. The Doctor discovers a slimy, green trail, identifying it as evidence of a large, intelligent, multinucleate organism, introducing a new, unsettling threat beyond the station's automated defenses. Their journey leads them through a disorienting decontamination chamber before they arrive at a room labeled "Animal and Botanic." Inside, they uncover a cryogenic repository containing microfilm records of humanity's entire body of knowledge—music, history, literature, and engineering. This discovery prompts the Doctor to theorize the station's true purpose: a "lifeboat" designed to preserve human heritage in the face of an Earth-bound cataclysm. Harry's suggestion of a survival kit solidifies this understanding. The missing piece of the puzzle, they realize, is humanity itself. Their exploration culminates in the discovery of the Cryogenic Chamber, a vast facility filled with hundreds of cryogenically frozen humans in plastic pods. The Doctor delivers a powerful monologue, celebrating humanity's indomitable spirit and its capacity to survive and thrive, even in the face of cosmic adversity, as they await a new beginning among the stars. This revelation firmly establishes the station as an ark, preserving the species for a future generation.
