When the Doctor and Sarah land on Earth in 15th-century San Martino, they must stop the evil Count Federico and his astrologer Hieronymous from using the Mandragora Helix energy to fulfill a deadly prophecy.
The Doctor and Sarah Jane Smith, traveling companions in the TARDIS, find themselves drawn into a sinister plot in 15th-century San Martino. Their journey begins when they encounter the Mandragora Helix, a spiral of pure energy with a controlling intelligence, which they attempt to evade. However, they are forced to make a forced landing on Earth, in a Mediterranean area with late 15th-century glass technology.
As they navigate this new environment, they become embroiled in the political intrigue of San Martino, where Count Federico, a ruthless and power-hungry noble, seeks to exploit the Mandragora Helix energy for his own gain. Federico is aided by Hieronymous, an astrologer who predicts the deaths of key figures using his knowledge of the stars.
The Doctor and Sarah soon discover that they have brought the Helix energy with them, which begins to wreak havoc on the local population. The Doctor attempts to warn Count Federico of the danger, but his efforts are met with skepticism and hostility.
Meanwhile, Sarah is captured by a group of monks who intend to sacrifice her as part of a dark ritual to appease the god Demnos. The Doctor must use his knowledge and cunning to rescue Sarah, stop the Helix energy, and prevent Federico and Hieronymous from carrying out their nefarious plans.
Throughout their journey, the Doctor and Sarah face numerous challenges and obstacles, including Federico's henchmen, the Helix energy's destructive power, and the complex web of alliances and rivalries between the characters. Ultimately, they must use all their skills and ingenuity to survive and prevent a catastrophic outcome.

The narrative beats that drive the story
The Doctor and Sarah explore a newly discovered TARDIS control room, engaging in characteristic witty banter about its impossible dimensions. Their journey takes an unexpected turn when the TARDIS is forcibly drawn into the Mandragora Helix, a mysterious spiral of pure energy with a controlling intelligence. After a turbulent escape, they crash-land in 15th-century San Martino, a Mediterranean region. Unbeknownst to them, a portion of the Helix energy escapes the TARDIS, immediately causing a peasant's death and leaving a distinctive turquoise residue. Simultaneously, the narrative introduces the local political landscape: the ruthless Count Federico, his nephew Duke Giuliano who champions scientific inquiry over superstition, and the astrologer Hieronymous, who uses his predictions to aid Federico's murderous ambitions. Sarah is swiftly captured by a cult of monks who intend to sacrifice her to their god Demnos during the upcoming solstice. The Doctor, attempting to locate Sarah and warn the locals about the destructive Helix energy, is captured by Federico's guards. He tries to explain the cosmic threat to Federico and Hieronymous, but they dismiss his warnings as sorcery, ultimately sentencing him to execution. The act concludes with both the Doctor and Sarah facing imminent death, highlighting their isolated and perilous situation in this unfamiliar, dangerous world.
